PAST

GRAYSON’S POV:

Theo walked into the kitchen and I looked up.

Whatever he saw on my face alerted him.

“Grayson?” He called, striding towards me. “You okay?”

I blinked.

“Yeah, I'm fine,” I said, straightening up.

“Couldn't do it, huh?” I asked. His eyes narrowed.

“You were listening in on our conversation?” He asked.

“I tried not to,” I shrugged. “You weren’t exactly quiet.”

He exhaled, taking the beer bottle from me and taking a small sip. “So fucking stupid.”

His eyes narrowed.“You were listening in on our conversation?” He asked.“I tried not to,” I shrugged. “You weren’t exactly quiet.”He exhaled, taking the beer bottle from me and taking a small sip. “So fucking stupid.”“Reed, you better tell her before it gets too late. Before she leaves for college and you never get the chance again.”He stared at me a beat too long. “Where is this coming from?”I shrugged. “Just the truth.”“Are you going to take your own advice, then?” He asked, a knowing look on his face that made me bristle.“What do you mean?” I asked.“I mean,” he said slowly, “are you going to tell Selene too?”The breath rushed out of my lungs as I stared at him, stunned.“What…” I said, then paused. “How do you…”He cut me off.

PASTGRAYSON'S POV:Decathlon morning arrived far too quickly and despite doing this for the last four years, I felt way too nervous. We arrived at the venue earlier than we were supposed to and now we were all lined up in the hallway outside the auditorium, blazers pressed meticulously, calculators and notecards clutched like lifelines. Theo clapped his hands together once, sharp and loud, instantly commanding attention.I braced myself.“Alright,” he announced, stepping into the center. “Gather up, geniuses.”A collective groan rippled through the group, but we did as told. We always did.Next to me, I glimpsed Maya turn to Selene and whisper, “He does this every single year. Somehow it never stops being weirdly motivating.”“Today,” Theo began dramatically, “is not just any day. Today is the day we defend our legacy.”“We are Crescent High’s reigning champions. Five years. Five consecutive wins.” he continued, pacing in front of us. He held up his hand, fingers splayed for emphasi

PASTSELENE'S POV:My exhausted and half-asleep brain barely registered the door opening.I only noticed the shadowy figure when it stepped inside my room, the induced darkness of midday making everything look all the more sinister.I immediately sat upright, my heart in my throat. For one stupid second, I thought the figure might be Grayson. I thought of a million ways I could've humiliated him, and asked him to leave me alone.Worse than that, though, I thought about how it would feel to kiss him again.I wondered if silence like this might give him the courage to be real, to show me the parts he kept buried.“You up?” Maya's voice called and my soaring hopes crashed to the ground.“Yes,” I replied, my voice groggy. “Everything okay?”She made an incoherent sound that told me it was anything but.I scooted to the edge of the bed, patting the empty space beside me.She crawled in after only a moment's hesitation.“I thought you'd be the first one out,” I said, considering she was the

PASTSELENE'S POV:“Don’t forget to take your medicines,” I called, snatching my charger off the table and cramming it into my already overstuffed backpack.“I won’t,” my grandmother said. “Did you pack your brush?”I dug through the chaos I’d dumped into my bag until my fingers closed around the handle of a hairbrush.“Got it,” I yelled back, just as a car horn blared outside. “Shit, they’re here.”“Phone, house keys, Bluetooth, charger,” my grandma recited, ticking each item off from memory.“All of it,” I said, hoisting the bag onto my shoulders. “Okay. I think I’ve got everything.”“Good luck with the decathlon,” my grandmother said, fussing with my hair. “You'll be wonderful.”Over the past few months, I slowly worked through the resentment I once carried towards her. It happened so quietly, through shared silences and winter nights spent staring at the stars through the top of the line telescope setup she gifted me when she remembered my birthday a day later.I didn’t even noti

PRESENTSELENE’S POV:Three days in, and I still hadn’t figured out how to exist in Corey Allister’s penthouse without feeling like I was trespassing. The place was immaculate in that expensive, untouched way. Everything was so pristine it almost felt sterile. There were no plants, no splashes of color to soften the edges. Even the air smelled cool, faintly metallic. There was nothing unnecessary in the place, only the things he absolutely needed. The lack of furniture made the penthouse feel larger, emptier—like a showroom instead of a home.On the second day here, I switched my phone off.Grayson had called until the battery threatened to give up entirely. Missed calls stacked on top of each other, voicemails I couldn’t bring myself to listen to. Maya was the only one I had contacted. She showed up to Corey's place within an hour, slightly angry but mostly worried. Telling her was enough to quiet the guilt, at least a little. She assured me she would take care of the boys—who wer

PRESENTGRAYSON’S POV:“There won’t be any vacations. Will there?” Julian asked, lounging in my chair as he offered me a glass of whiskey.“Obviously,” I drawled, leaning back against the sofa in my office - old office.I took a sip, the liquor burning its way down my throat. “How’s corporate life treating you?”He laughed. “Your company’s a disaster, Vexley. I can’t believe you handed me a sinking ship.”I winced.“I told you exactly what you were signing up for,” I said, offering Julian an apologetic shrug. “Fair enough,” Julian said as he picked the decanter and walked towards the sofa, settling himself on the other end.I pulled the decanter towards me to refill my glass.“Corey Allister paid me a visit,” Julian informed, making me halt mid-pour.“I’m surprised it took him two days,” I said with a snort. “What did he say?”“That he knows what you’re playing at and that it won’t work,” Julian said casually. “Though for all his bluster, he looked rattled.”I nodded. It was somethi
