Sophia's POV

Sleeping in this bed…in this house, with the enemy was one of the hardest things I had to do.

Every time I closed my eyes, all I saw was Nikolai’s face, and all I could hear was his voice haunting my every thought.

There was no way in hell I would have his child, but that meant I would have to lose my father, or at least whatever was left of him.

The sun was about to come, and I was sick of being in this bed, as luxurious as it was, all I wanted was my own bed back. I found a silk robe hanging in the closet, probably intended for me, so I wrapped it tightly around my body before walking out of the guest room.

To think that a week ago, I was about to start a new job. My dream job, and my first big girl job after college. Maybe my life would have been different if I had taken the job, travelled across states, instead of staying back to take care of my father.

As I walked down the never-ending stairs, I could hear my steps echo; that’s how quiet the house was.

As I veered towards the kitchen entrance, disappointment sank in the second my eyes landed on Nikolai.

He had his sleeves rolled up. Why did he always have to do that? He was seated by the marble island, drinking a cup of coffee, while reading something on a tablet.

I rolled my eyes at how comfortable he seemed. He had just uprooted my life, and he was sipping coffee like it was just another Monday morning.

“You’re up early.” He said without looking up. “Hungry?”

“I’m not hungry.”

He lifted his head, gently placing the tablet down. His dark eyes took me in slowly. “Mira will be down shortly.” He said. Sensing my confusion, he continued, “She’s my housekeeper.”

“I said I wasn’t hungry.”

“You will be. You’re going to need all the strength you can get.”

My stomach twisted into knots. “We need to talk.” I said with a heavy breath in, “About last night.” I was hoping to appeal to his human senses. He had to have that, right?”

“What’s there to talk about?” He asked, dropping the coffee mug on the counter.

“How can you sit there like any of this is okay?” My hands moved frantically.

He leaned against the counter, crossing his arms. “If I wasn’t clear enough. Let me explain how this works. You give me an heir, or I collect what your father owes me.”

I let out a scoff, “You mean you will take his life?” I asked, “What kind of monster are you?”

“I don’t know, why don’t we ask your father?”

“I’m not some cow you can breed.” I snapped, “I am a person!”

“You stopped being a person the moment your father let you go. Notice how he hasn’t tried to get you back?” His words cut deeper than a knife, but he was right. “And I’m not a monster, Soph. You will have everything you could need. Protection. Comfort. That’s way more than your drunken father ever gave you.”

“Don’t you dare talk about my father.”

He smiled so casually. Almost like my crashout was his entertainment.

“How about you have a seat?” He said, nodding towards one of the empty stools beside him.

“I’d rather not.”

He let out a quiet sigh and walked towards me slowly. He stopped about one foot away, and I tilted my head to meet his eyes.

“Follow me.” He leaned in smoothly before zooming out of the kitchen.

After hesitating for a second, I followed him into what seemed to be a study.

He walked behind the wide desk, taking out a cream colored envelope from the top drawer.

“I had my lawyer draft this up after our conversation last night.” He said, “Let’s just say, you inspired me.”

“What is it?” I asked, dreading the answer.

He held it out to me, “Why don’t you see for yourself?”

I snatched it away, my hands trembled as I opened it, and I couldn’t believe the words staring back at me as I unraveled the papers.

Marriage Contract.

My heart fell.

“That is a legally binding marriage agreement.” He said calmly, like it was no big deal.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Once you sign, we could have a little wedding ceremony. You become my wife.” He said like he was counting one to three.

I threw the papers in his face till they thumped lightly on the ground. “You’re insane if you think I’ll sign this.”

“Oh, Soph.” He made a tsk sound as he sauntered towards me. “Don’t you get it? You already agreed to be mine when you walked out of your father’s house.”

My eyes scanned his, hoping to find some semblance of humanity.

I found nothing.

“You can’t.” I responded shakily, “You can’t make me do this.”

“You sign, your father lives. It’s that simple.”

“Why?” I whispered, I could feel it all. The anger, the tears pooling in my eyes, all of it.

“We have been over this.” He folded his arms. “Your father took something from me, and now. I get to take something back.”

“You want me to sleep with you. Marry you, and have your baby as part of a contract?”

“Not in that exact order.” He teased, “But yeah.”

He was a psychopath. A monster. My nostrils flared up, and all I wanted to do was slap him in the face. But I couldn’t, I knew what he was capable of.

“You have until midnight to sign. I urge you to think carefully. Your father’s pathetic life depends on it.”

I couldn’t move. It was like I was plastered to the floor in shock.

“You can go now.” He said.

I turned around slowly. My feet are too heavy to carry.

“One more thing.” He said, and I stopped in my tracks without looking back. I couldn’t let him see me cry.

“If you sign, or should I say…when you sign.” There it was again, the slimy amusement in his voice. “We won’t be sleeping in separate rooms. You sleep in my bed…you know? For optics.”

I felt a lump lodge in my throat. I couldn’t breathe.

How was this my life? I had to marry a monster. Give him an heir. Or watch my father die.

Ch 15Nikolai's POVJack was waiting in the hallway, his demeanor carrying the same sense of urgency as his voice when he came to my door a couple of minutes earlier.“Two men. East fence. Armed.” He gave a quick debrief of the situation.I hated leaving Sophia by herself. I thought about her an unhealthy amount. The way her voice had softened when she told me to be careful. That fucked with my head more than anything Moretti could throw at me tonight. But there was no time for weakness tonight.I pulled my gun out from the holster at the side of my waist. “Are we sure it’s Moretti's men?”“Positive. They tried slipping through the blind spot near the old service road. The boys spotted them before they could get close.”“Take Petrov and three others. Bring them back alive. I need answers.”We moved out of the house with our guards up. Every step calculated, and our guns locked and ready to go. I could hear the low voices of my guards already in position. But somehow, everything in me

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Fourteen

Sophia’s POVSitting through dinner with a room full of potentially dangerous men was one thing, but playing a doting wife to their boss was certainly another.Suffice to say, I’m pretty sure I nailed being the perfect wife. Now here I was, sharing the same air as Nikolai. I dropped the perfect wife act as soon as everyone walked out of the dining room, but somehow, there was a feeling of angst that remained stagnant in the air between us. His body caged mine so close that I could smell his cologne mixed with a light trace of wine. It felt like torture being so close, and my body responded to the space between us, or the lack thereof, in ways my brain couldn’t completely comprehend. I hated how my body remembered the way our lips touched, or the way his fingers made my skin pulse like there were bolts of electricity beneath it.He pulled away the moment he looked down at his phone. Whatever he read had changed his demeanor in an instant. His jaw tightened, and his eyes went cold.

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Thirteen

Nikolai's POVThe night was going according to plan. My men sat around the table, wine flowing, and just the right amount of fear beneath all the socializing. Yet, something felt different, and I knew it before I thought about it.It was because she was sitting right by my side.Sophia. My fake wife looked far too good in that black dress. I had to remind myself that it was all pretend. But not every part of me had gotten the memo. She looked good in that black dress. It hugged her body like it had been made just for her.The neckline plunged so far down that I had caught some of my men staring. Just one warning look from me was enough to make them back off. Then there was the red lipstick. My God. My mind wandered to our kiss. After she left the gym, I felt as though I had lost all sanity.Petra’s gaze stayed heavy on me. I hadn't forgotten how disrespectful she had been to Sophia. She was starting to become a liability.“Enough personal matters,” I turned my attention to the me

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Twelve

Sophia's POVHoly shit.I just kissed Nikolai Lev. And I liked it.All I could think of as I made my way up the stairs was how wrong all of this was.Nikolai was the enemy. Hating him was the only way to survive this marriage. Kissing him and enjoying it was the opposite of that."Get it together, Sophia," I whispered, shutting the door behind me.I scooped Loki out of his carrier immediately, burying my face in his soft fur as he purred against my chest. Easing me out of my angst. "I don't know what I'm doing, Loki," I murmured to him. "Dad’s probably passed out drunk on the floor somewhere, and here I am, kissing the devil.”My eyes landed on a pile of shopping bags and boxes in the corner. I set Loki on the bed and began digging through them. It had basically everything I had requested. Shoes, clothes, and, most importantly, there was also a new phone.Which was great, because I was slowly losing my mind here.I thought for a second who I could call. My best friend, Amaya, was pr

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Eleven

Niko's POVI was in the middle of bench presses in my home gym, trying to burn off some steam before tonight's dinner, when Ivan knocked and walked in."Some things arrived for Sophia Rossi." He looked at me like I had somehow become Sophia. Or should I say, my wife. The same woman who had accused my oldest friend of being a traitor. My nostrils flared at the mere thought of her words. She had no idea what she was talking about.I'd admit, my anger might have gotten the best of me, but Sophia had a way of infuriating me like no one else, while affecting me in a way I just couldn't bring myself to comprehend."How about you give it to her then?" I grunted, pushing the barbell back into the rack. "What should I do about the cat?""What cat?" I froze in place"Uh…this one?"My whole body snaps up, and my eyes instantly land on a pet carrier with what seems to be a small white cat behind the bars."What the hell..." I take a deep breath. How has she managed to piss me off twice in one da

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Ten

Sophia's POV“My love,” He said performatively. Clearly putting on a show for his audience of one, Petra. I put on a fake smile, knowing I had to also play along to whatever this was.“Hi, baby…” I said softly, and a flicker of curiosity flashed in his eyes. He could probably tell how rusty I was in the writing department. I hadn't had a boyfriend in so long. Taking care of my father was a lot of work; ergo, I had no social life.Niki stretched out his hand for me to take, and after a second of hesitation, I did.He gently led me away from my hiding spot and into the office, where Petra looked unimpressed. Her left leg stuck out in front like a pose, revealing her thigh-high slit. Seriously, was there some kind of cocktail party this morning? She had her arms crossed across her chest, like she was ready for war.And to be honest, so was I. She stared at me, top to bottom. Like she was scanning me for some kind of virus.“Hello,” I said sweetly. I had to play the perfect wife, and t

Niko's POVI leaned back, taking all my plans in. Tonight was the night. It was a wonder how we managed to stay best friends a

Niko's POVShe stared at me like she was a deer caught in headlights. The poor thing had no idea what she had just gotten herself into.“You can’t be serious.” She sprinted out of her seat. • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Two

Sophia's POVNikolai’s eyes never left mine. Maybe he thought I was stupid, brave, or maybe both. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.“Why the hell would I do that?” His gun remained pointed at me.I was officially being stupid.I stammered, that’s what happens when you have a gun in your face.“

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter One

Sophia's POV“Sophia, sit.” My father muttered. I could smell the alcohol on his breath. A bad habit that became worse after mum died. “Dad…what’s wrong?” He didn’t say a word. He just carried on circling the living room like there was a fire somewhere. His bloodshot eyes darted out the windows e
