Sophia's POV

“Sophia, sit.” My father muttered. I could smell the alcohol on his breath. A bad habit that became worse after mum died.

“Dad…what’s wrong?”

He didn’t say a word. He just carried on circling the living room like there was a fire somewhere. His bloodshot eyes darted out the windows every few seconds like he was searching for something no one else could see.

“Dad, you’re scaring me.”

“Sit. Now.” I flinched as I sat on the edge of the worn-out couch. He slammed his clenched fist into his open palm. Again, and again, and again.

“He’s coming for me.” His voice cracked. “I know he is.”

My stomach dropped. “Who’s coming for you?”

“I’ve done things, Sophia. Things I can’t take back.”

I got up slowly, careful not to startle him. “Dad, it’s okay. No one’s coming. Just breathe…”

“You need to leave. Right now. Take the car and go.” For a nanosecond, his eyes seemed clear, and I caught a glimpse of the man I once knew.

“I’m not leaving you.”

His face fell. “I can’t lose you, too.”

I wrapped my arms around his frail stature, “I’m right here, Dad. You’re not going to lose me.”

He trembled against me, a sob escaping his throat as tears rolled down my face.

I held him until the sound of tires screeching violently against our driveway tore us apart.

My father's eyes widened in utter terror. He lunged to the window, shutting the blinds with trembling hands.

“Hide now.”

“Dad,” I said slowly. “What’s going on?”

“He’s here.” His words barely sounded coherent. “God damn it, Sophia. Hide.”

The front door exploded louder than my father had. With one last desperate look at my father, I did as he asked.

I ran up the stairs as fast as my feet could carry me. I burst into my bedroom, shutting the door behind me as the adrenaline coursed through my veins.

I heard my father’s voice echo through “Please, I’m sorry, I’ll do whatever you want, just don’t…”

I heard a heavy thud and then a grunt.

I couldn’t just hide up here. Whoever those men were, they could hurt him, or worse.

My mind screamed at me to hide, but I was frozen in place. That was until I heard footsteps coming up the stairs.

In a panic, I threw myself to the ground, crawling beneath my bed. I tried to make myself as small as possible as the footsteps got closer and closer.

Until it stopped right at my bedroom door. The doorknob rattled till it was kicked open.

I flinched, I was terrified, but I willed myself to stay as still as possible.

My eyes followed the footsteps till I was face to face with the invader’s black boots. I closed my eyes, hoping he would go away.

Hoping this whole day would go away.

But he didn’t.

I felt a tight grip on my ankles, and suddenly I was dragged violently, my entire body sliding against the hard floor.

I screamed as loud as I could, and I kicked.

“Let me go," I yelled furiously, but he forced me to my feet and slammed me against the wall.

He held me in place with his strong grip, no matter how hard I fought to get away.

“You must be Sophia?” He asked comically with a sinister smirk on his face.

His dark eyes never left mine, and his voice was as deep as it was terrifyingly calm.

“Yeah,” I spat at him, “And who the hell are you?”

He let out a low chuckle, "Feisty, I like that.”

This had to be the man my father feared.

“Let go of me.”

He finally let go, only to corner me against the wall with his broad shoulders blocking my path.

His presence towered over me. There was something about the energy coming off him that set off my nerves, or maybe that was just the smell of his expensive cologne. His gaze softened for a second, his eyes tracing my face like he was taking a mental picture.

“Sophia Rossi…” My name rolled off his tongue as it belonged to him. “You look nothing like your father.”

“What do you want with us?” I demanded, “Whatever he owes you, he can’t pay it. He’s sick. He has nothing.”

There was a flicker of anger in his eyes, but the smirk on his face stayed. “Do you know who I am?”

I shook my head.

“Let’s fix that, shall we?” He stepped back and gestured toward the doorway with a mocking courtesy, “After you.”

I couldn’t run. Not with him right behind me as we walked down the stairs.

I finally made it to the bottom of the stairs, my eyes scanning the living room for my father.

Till my eyes landed on him. He was on his knees. His face covered in blood, with two men in black with guns on each side of him.

I ran to his side, my heart racing.

“Dad!” I rushed to him, grabbing his swollen face in my hand. “What is wrong with you?” I yelled at the man from my bedroom. He was clearly their leader.m. “He’s just an old man! Whatever he did, he doesn’t deserve this!”

His dark eyes stayed on me, his jaw clenched with every word.

“Are you sure about that?” His voice was dangerously low. “Stefan, why don’t you tell your daughter what you did to me?”

My father could barely look at me. He crouched over, sobbing hysterically.

“Dad?” I whispered.

The man paced around slowly. Then stopped. “Your father put two bullets in my father’s head, and dumped him in the river like he was nothing.”

I couldn’t breathe. “That’s…that’s not true.”

“That’s not possible,” I whispered, staring into the distance. “Dad?” I looked to my father in a panic, but he was a blubbering mess.

“Silly me,” He continued, “Where are my manners? My name is Nikolai Lev, and tonight,  I’m going to kill your father.”

“No!” I threw my arms around my father. “Please don’t do this.”

One of the guards grabbed me, while the other took my father. Placing him on his feet, while I kicked and screamed beside him.

“Please don’t do this,” I begged.

Nikolai pulled out his gun, pointing it right at my father. His eyes burned into mine.

“The least you could do is look at me, Stefan Rossi,” Nikolai said coldly.

Between his sobs, my father whispered: “I’m sorry.” Over and over.

“Look at me,” Nikolai yelled.

My father was shaken as he lifted his eyes slowly to Nikolai.

“Please don’t.” I cried.

I finally escaped from the guard’s grasp, throwing myself in front of my father and right into the line of fire.

“Please.” My voice trembled. “Take me instead.”

Ch 15Nikolai's POVJack was waiting in the hallway, his demeanor carrying the same sense of urgency as his voice when he came to my door a couple of minutes earlier.“Two men. East fence. Armed.” He gave a quick debrief of the situation.I hated leaving Sophia by herself. I thought about her an unhealthy amount. The way her voice had softened when she told me to be careful. That fucked with my head more than anything Moretti could throw at me tonight. But there was no time for weakness tonight.I pulled my gun out from the holster at the side of my waist. “Are we sure it’s Moretti's men?”“Positive. They tried slipping through the blind spot near the old service road. The boys spotted them before they could get close.”“Take Petrov and three others. Bring them back alive. I need answers.”We moved out of the house with our guards up. Every step calculated, and our guns locked and ready to go. I could hear the low voices of my guards already in position. But somehow, everything in me

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Fourteen

Sophia’s POVSitting through dinner with a room full of potentially dangerous men was one thing, but playing a doting wife to their boss was certainly another.Suffice to say, I’m pretty sure I nailed being the perfect wife. Now here I was, sharing the same air as Nikolai. I dropped the perfect wife act as soon as everyone walked out of the dining room, but somehow, there was a feeling of angst that remained stagnant in the air between us. His body caged mine so close that I could smell his cologne mixed with a light trace of wine. It felt like torture being so close, and my body responded to the space between us, or the lack thereof, in ways my brain couldn’t completely comprehend. I hated how my body remembered the way our lips touched, or the way his fingers made my skin pulse like there were bolts of electricity beneath it.He pulled away the moment he looked down at his phone. Whatever he read had changed his demeanor in an instant. His jaw tightened, and his eyes went cold.

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Thirteen

Nikolai's POVThe night was going according to plan. My men sat around the table, wine flowing, and just the right amount of fear beneath all the socializing. Yet, something felt different, and I knew it before I thought about it.It was because she was sitting right by my side.Sophia. My fake wife looked far too good in that black dress. I had to remind myself that it was all pretend. But not every part of me had gotten the memo. She looked good in that black dress. It hugged her body like it had been made just for her.The neckline plunged so far down that I had caught some of my men staring. Just one warning look from me was enough to make them back off. Then there was the red lipstick. My God. My mind wandered to our kiss. After she left the gym, I felt as though I had lost all sanity.Petra’s gaze stayed heavy on me. I hadn't forgotten how disrespectful she had been to Sophia. She was starting to become a liability.“Enough personal matters,” I turned my attention to the me

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Twelve

Sophia's POVHoly shit.I just kissed Nikolai Lev. And I liked it.All I could think of as I made my way up the stairs was how wrong all of this was.Nikolai was the enemy. Hating him was the only way to survive this marriage. Kissing him and enjoying it was the opposite of that."Get it together, Sophia," I whispered, shutting the door behind me.I scooped Loki out of his carrier immediately, burying my face in his soft fur as he purred against my chest. Easing me out of my angst. "I don't know what I'm doing, Loki," I murmured to him. "Dad’s probably passed out drunk on the floor somewhere, and here I am, kissing the devil.”My eyes landed on a pile of shopping bags and boxes in the corner. I set Loki on the bed and began digging through them. It had basically everything I had requested. Shoes, clothes, and, most importantly, there was also a new phone.Which was great, because I was slowly losing my mind here.I thought for a second who I could call. My best friend, Amaya, was pr

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Eleven

Niko's POVI was in the middle of bench presses in my home gym, trying to burn off some steam before tonight's dinner, when Ivan knocked and walked in."Some things arrived for Sophia Rossi." He looked at me like I had somehow become Sophia. Or should I say, my wife. The same woman who had accused my oldest friend of being a traitor. My nostrils flared at the mere thought of her words. She had no idea what she was talking about.I'd admit, my anger might have gotten the best of me, but Sophia had a way of infuriating me like no one else, while affecting me in a way I just couldn't bring myself to comprehend."How about you give it to her then?" I grunted, pushing the barbell back into the rack. "What should I do about the cat?""What cat?" I froze in place"Uh…this one?"My whole body snaps up, and my eyes instantly land on a pet carrier with what seems to be a small white cat behind the bars."What the hell..." I take a deep breath. How has she managed to piss me off twice in one da

  • His To Have And To Loathe   Chapter Ten

Sophia's POV“My love,” He said performatively. Clearly putting on a show for his audience of one, Petra. I put on a fake smile, knowing I had to also play along to whatever this was.“Hi, baby…” I said softly, and a flicker of curiosity flashed in his eyes. He could probably tell how rusty I was in the writing department. I hadn't had a boyfriend in so long. Taking care of my father was a lot of work; ergo, I had no social life.Niki stretched out his hand for me to take, and after a second of hesitation, I did.He gently led me away from my hiding spot and into the office, where Petra looked unimpressed. Her left leg stuck out in front like a pose, revealing her thigh-high slit. Seriously, was there some kind of cocktail party this morning? She had her arms crossed across her chest, like she was ready for war.And to be honest, so was I. She stared at me, top to bottom. Like she was scanning me for some kind of virus.“Hello,” I said sweetly. I had to play the perfect wife, and t
