Sabrina’s Pov

I couldn’t believe what I heard. I felt my entire world pause. While my phone was still pressed to my ear, I slowly turned to face Santiago .

“My sister…” I whispered.

“What about her?” He asked, with concern all over his face.

My voice was trembling. “She’s been shot, I need to go to the hospital right now.”

Santiago 's expression, which showed he was longing for something more, was now filled with alarm. He didn’t wait for me to say any more words before dressing up. We both sensed the urgency.

“Which hospital was she taken to?” I asked over the phone, tring to keep my breath steady. I could feel my heart pounding so fast which made it hard for me to hear the reply.

“H. Jude Hospital. She was brought here not long ago, and she’s unconscious due to the large amount of blood she has lost.”

I didn’t want to hear all of that over the phone, so I hung up quickly.

I turned, surprised to see Santiago  fully dressed; his earlier desire was now replaced with concern. “I will drive you there.”

“Don’t bother.” I said, not expecting him to do that. But he insisted and I wasn't ready to argue. I grabbed my pants from the bed, putting it on quickly, while I managed to zip it halfway. As we rushed out of the room, my heels clicked against the floor. We then rushed into the elevator, we got outside the hotel and then into the car, as he drove, the silence was deafening, my fingers were shaking every second.

I was mumbling to myself, wondering who could have done this. I had no idea I had spoken out loud. “It could be someone you know.”

I fixed my gaze on him, my face filled with curiosity. “You know you sound like someone who knows something.”

“You think that way because you don’t know me, but you’re wrong.” He said, with his eyes fixed on the road, while I looked away, facing the window, biting my lip to keep myself from crying.

We got to the hospital, we were told to wait in the waiting room, it smelled like anxiety and anticipation, a nurse finally led us to the hallway, she didn’t say much, and I didn’t bother asking. Valentina was in the surgery room, and when I got there, her eyes were closed, which made me scared. Observing her body, I noticed the bullet had gone through her ribs.

To my surprise, Santiago  was speaking with the doctor, his face was tight as he turned to face me. “This is bad.”

“Look at her, will she make it?”

Santiago  gave me an assuring look that said not to worry, but that wasn’t possible. I was told to leave the surgery room for the surgery to take place, while I sat in the waiting room, I buried my face in my hands. This wasn’t how tonight was meant to be. My sister is lying on that bed, while her life is hanging by a thread.

Santiago  leaned on the hospital wall, pulled off his jacket, and gently placed it on my back. His hair was disheveled, while his sleeves were rolled up.

“You have to be calm.” He said, gently.

“You have to leave now.” I snapped.

“You won't just shut me out like this.” He muttered.

“I will, you have no idea what it's like to see someone I care about lying there half dead. She’s all I got, and I feel so helpless.”

Santiago  sighed. “You don’t have to use the word helpless, you’re here for her, stepping in when no one did, means a lot.”

I could tell he was trying to assure me. “Stop comforting me, you owe me nothing.”

I could sense the silence for a moment before he finally spoke up. “What if I do?”

Now, I was curious to know who exactly I just wanted a one-night stand. “Why are you still here with me? You’re also acting so nice, why?”

“Nothing much, just want to be here.”

I sighed. “All I ever wanted from you was just a night, one night with no strings attached.”

“Don’t say that. What if I wanted more than just that? What if I don't want to spend just a night with you?”

I fixed my gaze on him, I was stunned at this point but I never asked for this nor do I want this. “Stop confusing the hell out of me.” I wasn’t interested in whatever he had to say.

“Nah, I’m not, I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I just want you to know it wasn’t just sex I wanted from you. Why will I be here with you if that's what I want?”

“You’re probably here out of pity.”

“You’re mistaken, when I look at you, I see something different. You're a smart and fierce lady, and I can't let you go for some reason.”

“What the fuck, you barely know me.”

“Then I think you should let me get to know you more.”

Just then, Santiago 's phone rang, I pulled away then watched him step aside to make a call. He paced in the hallway and was also speaking in a low tone, I could only wonder who he was talking to. Not long after he had left the doctor walked towards my direction. “We have done the surgery but I am sorry to say no changes were seen.”

I didn’t wait for him to say anything more before I dashed off to the room she was moved to. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I saw Valentina. I held her hand, “I will make sure to find who did this to you.” I was thinking about how I would explain what happened to Aunt Carmen, and then I saw a face. The figure was unclear, but when I squinted my eyes, I saw someone familiar, the devil himself, Rodrigo. My eyes widened in shock, and I parted my lips immediately.

“Rodrigo!”

Sabrina's Pov I scrambled back on the bed, my dress was still bunched around my thighs.Santiago stood there, gun lowered with his chest rising and falling fast. Blood splatter dotted his unbuttoned shirt. He looked at the two bodies in the doorway, then back at me, eyes dark and unreadable. “Sabrina, breathe, it is over, they’re down.”“Down?” I laughed, sharp and hysterical. “You just shot three men like it was nothing. How did you even…… where did that gun come from? Under my bed? Who the hell are you?”He moved fast but careful, stepping over the first body to check the hallway. “Clear,” he muttered, then pulled out his phone and dialed with one hand, “Yeah, it’s me. Two down at my current location. Send a crew now. No, don’t ask questions, just make it quiet and fast.” He hung up and turned to me. “Backup’s coming to clean this up.”I snatched the lamp off the nightstand, ripping the code from the wall, and held it like a bat. My hands shook but I didn’t lower it. “Backup? You h

Sabrina's PovMartinez didn’t ask me to sit. He just shut the door and leaned against his desk, arms crossed like the weight of the precinct was pressing down on his shoulders.“They got to him,” he said.My chest squeezed so tight I had to remind myself to breathe. “When?”“An hour ago, there was a shift change and just freaking five minutes of blind cameras.” His voice was low, tired. “Security footage? Wiped clean, like it never happened.”“No, that cell is locked down tighter than a vault.” I stepped closer, palms slapping the desk. “How the hell did they pull that off?”“That’s what’s eating me,” Martinez muttered. “Cause of death was strangulation or even any sign of struggle. He looked… resigned, like he saw it coming.”“Rodrigo,” I whispered.Martinez gave a single nod. “it had to be.”“Did anyone see anything useful?”“Nothing, one guard mentioned a power flicker.” Martinez’s eyes narrowed. “You didn’t answer your phone earlier.”“I was at the hospital.”Rage and fear crashed

Sabrina's Pov I left the precinct earlier than planned. I needed to see Tina again, even if she was still half asleep and barely speaking. I needed proof she was still here. My mind kept looping through everything the man had said.I tried focusing on the steps in front of me, on the sidewalk, on anything that didn’t feel like it was pressing down on my chest. But I was too caught up in my own thoughts, too busy trying to figure out what Rodrigo’s next move might be.Which is probably why I didn’t notice anyone walking toward me until it was too late.I bumped straight into a solid chest.“Oh, Sabrina,” a familiar voice said as a hand wrapped gently around my arm to steady me. “Be careful.”I looked up quickly. “Santiago?”He smiled a little, still holding onto me for a second before letting go. “You okay? You looked miles away.”“Yeah, I was just deep in thoughts,” I muttered, brushing my hair back. “Clearly,” he said with a soft laugh. “You almost knocked yourself out.”I rolled m

Sabrina’s PovMartinez walked me down the hallway in silence. When we reached the small interrogation room, he stopped and looked at me like he wasn’t sure if letting me in was a good idea.“I’m here now, let me talk to him.”He opened the door. The man sat cuffed to the table, bruised and staring straight at me the moment I walked in. He looked too relaxed for someone caught in the middle of an attempted murder case.“There she is,” he said, smiling like we were old friends.I pulled the chair out and sat. “Start talking.”“No warm greeting?” he teased. “You detectives are all the same.”“You asked for me, and here I am, so talk.”He tilted his head. “I heard your cousin pulled through. Tough girl.”My jaw clenched. “Don’t mention her.”He shrugged, almost amused. “You can’t handle hearing her name? That’s interesting.”Martinez stepped behind me, shoulders tense. “Cut the attitude and answer her.”The man leaned forward a little. “Rodrigo told me you’d show up just like this. Straig

Sabrina’s Pov I had stood outside in the freezing night, shifting my gaze from one passing vehicle to another. I know who I saw, I know it was Rodrigo. “Excuse me, miss?” I turned to look at the clueless nurse. “Miss Sabrina,” I refused to shift my focus from the road. “I was asked to get your signatures on this paper.” I signed it quickly. My heart ached so badly I was hallucinating, but if it was Rodrigo, then this is just the beginning. Tina laid in bed, she looked so calm but I could still see she was in pain. I stood near Tina’s bed, rubbing her stiff hands together. The machines beeped softly, reminding me she was still here. Barely, but here. “I’m so sorry, Tee,” I whispered softly as if she would wake up if I spoke too loudly and I knew she needed rest. “I should’ve protected you. I should’ve been there.” Her eyes were closed. She couldn’t hear me, but saying the words still burned my throat. I pulled the chair closer and sat, leaning forward with my elbows on t
