ALEXANDER

I sat curled up on the stool by the window, morning sunlight spilling through the open curtain, but I couldn’t stop replaying last night. It wasn’t just humiliation—it was a reminder that I might stay like this until I die, that no one would ever accept me as their mate.

I didn’t even know what I was supposed to feel.

After I failed to transform during the pack’s coming-of-age ceremony, my father left me to my fate. He handed me over to my stepmother’s cruelty, and she made sure I paid for surviving my mother—and for being born at all.

The youths who mocked me—who threw stones—were faces I could still see clearly. And yet, as the daughter of one of the pack’s most influential elders, I shouldn’t have been treated like that. But no one respected me. They jeered at my weight, called me ugly, and the cruelest of them gave me a name that stuck like a brand: dead fat wolf.

My door creaked open.

I jerked my head around and saw Anita slip inside, her eyes flicking to the empty mattress and then to me by the window. My room was large, but it might as well have been a cell—just the mattress on the floor and the stool beneath me.

“Alex,” she whispered, tense and hurried. “Mistress Jezebel demands your presence at once.”

At that name, fear clamped around my heart. My body went rigid, trembling before I could even think.

Anita was gone before I realized it—door closed, footsteps fading.

I forced myself off the stool and hurried after her. By the time I reached the door—barely a couple of minutes away—I was already panting, sweat sliding down the back of my neck.

They made me feel like being obese was a curse.

But I knew it wasn’t.

I pulled my door open and stepped into the hallway, my eyes snapping to my sister’s door, left slightly ajar.

“My darling Damon,” a breathy voice purred, “I can’t wait anymore. Let night fall, let the Moon Goddess declare me your fated mate. I want to live in your arms, to fall asleep to your love whispered into the dark. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

I recognized the speaker at once—Tracy. My step-sister. The Gideon family’s favored daughter. My father draped her in the finest things as if she’d been born royalty. The maids adored her beauty, and the men of the pack treated her like something precious.

She never wore the same dress twice in a day—once was enough for her.

My gaze dropped to my own outfit, a dress riddled with patches. I’d been wearing some version of the same worn fabric since my coming of age. After I failed to transform, they stopped allocating clothes to me. My father branded me useless, and my stepmother made sure I stayed that way. Even the maids wore pretty dresses while I rotated between two that no longer fit right, outgrowing everything I’d brought in my luggage long ago.

“I can’t wait either,” a male voice murmured. “I’ve been aching to see your beautiful face every morning when I wake.”

“Such a sweet tongue,” Tracy giggled. “You’ve learned to flatter me, Damon.”

My throat tightened.

That voice—there was no mistaking it. Damon. Our Alpha. And today, after the bonding ceremony, he would finally take the throne.

Call me a loser if you want, but ever since Damon stopped my step-mother from selling me off when I was a child, I’d watched him from a distance whenever I could. When he was near, my whole body felt too awake. My heart sprinted at the sound of his voice—even when he wasn’t speaking to me at all.

I didn’t realize I was moving until my feet carried me to Tracy’s door.

I peered through the narrow opening.

Tracy’s arms were looped around Damon’s neck. Damon’s hand rested on her waist, pulling her close. They leaned in—about to kiss.

A sour taste rose in my mouth. My chest cinched tight. I didn’t know what to call it—jealousy, hurt, longing—but the only thing I could think was that I wanted to be the one in his arms.

Then a sharp voice cracked through the hallway like a whip.

“Where is that girl?” Jezebel snarled.

Fear jolted through me. I stumbled back, trying to run, and my foot caught. I went down hard—my backside slamming into the floor.

As I scrambled up, I heard Damon’s voice, colder now.

“Someone’s peeping at us.”

Tracy’s laughter followed, light and careless.

“It doesn’t matter,” she said sweetly. “We’re getting married today.”

Before I reached the door at the end of the corridor, I was already drenched in sweat. My heart hammered against my ribs, and my fists tightened nervously. I reached for the handle—then flinched when Jezebel snapped, “Nonsense!”

I swallowed hard. My mouth went instantly dry. The moment she looked away from the maid giving her report and fixed her gaze on me, my back stiffened. Her eyes were so terrifying they stole the breath from my lungs.

“You’ve grown lazy, Alexander,” Jezebel said coldly. “Still in your room at this hour? Your workload clearly isn’t enough. I’ll instruct the butler to increase it immediately.”

My knees nearly buckled. I was already pushed to my limit. The maids refused to lift a finger; whenever they saw me, they dumped their work on me, and if I refused, I’d be beaten until I gave in.

“We’ve seen the Elder,” the maids chimed in at once.

That was when I lifted my head and saw my father. He frowned, looking me over, and demanded, “What are you doing here—and why are you wearing that dress?”

ALEXANDERI felt soft lips on my forehead. I opened my eyes slightly, overjoyed, and squinted happily as I looked into his.“Good morning,” I mumbled.Chris looked at me and whispered, “It’s time to go home.”I nodded slowly. I was surprised to see that he had bought another outfit for me. After I quickly changed, we went through the tunnel and made our way to the parked car.We got in, and he drove me to a bar in town. It wasn’t too busy since it was dawn. There were only a few pedestrians and fewer cars, mostly people heading to their offices. He looked at me and said, “You shouldn’t spend all your days at home. You can work at this bar, so you can learn more about the city.”“I agree with you,” I replied. We got out of the car and walked toward the bar. Aside from a cleaner sweeping and mopping the floor, no one else was there. At the counter, the cleaner raised her head and said, “Mr. Chris, the manager is in his office. You’re lucky—he was about to go out to see his new girl, but

ALEXANDERIt was too late when I realized I had fallen into her trap. Her fist had already shot forward, but I was quicker, retreating just before it could land squarely on my chest.I flew backward, losing my footing.Mira looked at me with a cold smile. “Ain’t you going to fight anymore?”Then I heard a faint voice in my heart.“Transform.”I glanced toward Chris. His face was expressionless, but I already knew he was the one who had sent the message. I didn’t question why he wanted me to transform.I turned back to Mira, my eyes growing cold. “As you wish.”A sharp squeaking sound filled the air, followed by the sickening crack of bones shifting and snapping into place. The pain rattled me deeply; it was unbearable, but I gritted my teeth and endured it until the transformation was complete. The moment it ended, I moved. Before Mira could even react, I swatted her across the room and sent her crashing into the wall. The instant her back slammed against it, I lunged forward, caught

ALEXANDERWhen I saw Chris on the floor, he was back on his feet in a flash. He burst into exaggerated laughter, then said with a grin, “Again!”I didn’t hesitate. The moment I moved, I struck him with a swipe of my claw and sent him flying. He landed hard on the floor and looked up at me in surprise.I was surprised too. The first time I hit him, I told myself he simply hadn’t been prepared. But this time, he had been fully ready, and I still managed to land the blow.“What a powerful wolf,” Chris said with a sigh. “The speed, the accuracy, the strength... I can only win if I’m in my wolf form.”I stayed quiet. I didn’t know how to react. For years, I had dreamed of and wished for this day, but now that it had finally come, I didn’t even know how I felt.Chris looked at me casually and said, “Attack me again.”I was just about to move when a shout rang out from behind him.“Enough!”Both of us turned toward the voice and saw Mira striding over. Her face was dark, and she glared at me

ALEXANDERChris’s eyes dimmed as he replied to her gloomily, “Mira, you need to show great respect to my wife. She is the Luna of the pack, not you. I haven’t fallen in love with you in the past three years, I do not love you now, and nothing in the future will change my decision. I hope you can respect my choice and stop dreaming of us ending up together.”Hearing Chris’s harsh words, I realized he was truly angry at Mira for what she had just said. Without hesitation, I decided to claim him.I reached out and wrapped an arm possessively around his waist, then looked at Mira with open contempt. From the corner of my eye, I caught the surprise on Chris’s face.I sneered at Mira. “Chris is my husband. I don’t like other women entertaining thoughts about him. I am jealous and possessive, and I have no intention of sharing my man with anyone—especially not with you.”Mira glared at me with hostility, but her stare did not intimidate me at all. Instead, it only made me bolder. The days of

ALEXANDERChris ignored Peter completely and walked straight to me. He helped me to my feet and said, “I’m sorry you got hurt. Next time, idiots like him won’t get the chance to do something like that.”Although his words touched my heart, I was still upset by Peter calling me a weak woman. I had grown up being called an ugly girl—was I supposed to endure another humiliating label too?I turned to Peter with cold eyes and sneered. “I may be weak today, but tomorrow I’ll show you my strength and make you eat your words.”Peter looked at me strangely, then burst into laughter. He laughed so hard his body convulsed. After a moment, he stopped, slipped one hand into his pocket, and said, “I’m sorry.”The corner of my lips twitched as I wondered what game he was playing. How could he switch from hostile to friendly in the blink of an eye?Peter waved a hand and said, “Don’t think too much about it. I’ve always wondered what kind of woman could make Chris, who has lived like a monk, fall in

ALEXANDERI turned around, unease curling in my chest. The idea of getting married did not seem pleasant at all, especially after everything I had gone through at the hands of Alpha Damon. He had treated me worse than trash, and at times, it felt as though he had never truly accepted me as his wife.I lowered my head and furrowed my brows. Before I realized it, Chris’s palm rested gently on my arm. I lifted my head and met his eyes, which were filled with sincerity.“You don’t need to feel pressured. Whenever you are ready, I will walk down the aisle with you.”Hearing those words moved my heart. I reached out and hugged him tightly, and he wrapped his arms around me in return. The warmth of his embrace soothed my racing heart. He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to my neck before ruffling my hair. Then he said, “I’ll be leaving the house soon. Take care of yourself.”He placed a gentle kiss on my forehead before walking out of my room. A moment later, he got into his car and drove

ALEXANDERI looked at her and immediately understood what they were planning. They wanted to lure me outside, kidnap me, and use me to threaten Chris. How could I possibly fall for such cheap provocation? ALEXANDERI felt a chill run down my spine. Memories of how harsh he had been during training filled me with fear.“You shouldn’t be afraid of me.
