The rain had long since stopped falling, but the air still felt heavy, charged with everything we had said and everything we hadn't. The kiss Dark had placed on my forehead still burned — gentle, reverent, a promise I wasn't sure I deserved. I had barely stepped into the hallway when the heavy oak doors of the entrance swung open.

And the world tilted on its axis.

She stood there like a storm made flesh — perfectly tailored suit in the deepest shade of midnight blue, pearls the size of river stones around her neck, and eyes so cold they could have frozen the sun. Doña Elvira Zapanta. Dark’s mother.

She swept into the house, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor like a judgment. Her gaze swept past me — barely a flicker — before landing on Dark, who had stepped out of the kitchen behind me.

"You're home," Dark said, his voice steady, but I heard the slight change. The way his shoulders straightened. The way he stepped forward, placing himself between me and her. "I wasn't expecting you."

"Clearly," she replied, her voice sharp as a whip. Her eyes shifted back to me, narrowing as if she had just noticed a speck of dust on her floor. "And who is this?"

Dark turned to me, his expression softening for only a fraction of a second before hardening again. "This is Miranda Regalado. She's… helping us out here."

"Helping," Doña Elvira repeated, the word dripping with disdain. She walked toward me, slow and deliberate, circling me like I was a piece of property she was inspecting. She looked at my uniform — the simple black dress and white apron — and her lip curled. "You're the one. The girl from the papers. The one your father sold to my son."

My face burned. I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole. "Yes,… Ma'am."

"Don't call me Ma'am," she said coldly. "I know exactly what you are. A transaction. A debt. And now you stand here, in my house, looking at my son like you have any right to be here."

"Mother," Dark warned, his voice low. "That is enough."

"Enough?" She turned on him, incredulous. "Do you know what they are saying outside? Dark Zapanta bought himself a bride. The maid who trapped a billionaire. Is this what you want? To be the laughingstock of the entire city? For her?" She gestured at me like I was something unpleasant stuck to her shoe. "A girl who was handed over like cattle?"

I was shocked and speechless.

Was I bought only to become his wife?

"There are so many beautiful women just as wealthy as him — why did he choose me?"

"I bought her to save her," Dark said, stepping fully in front of me now, shielding me from her icy gaze. "Not to own her. Not to keep her. And certainly not to be spoken to like that."

"Save her?" Doña Elvira laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. "From what? Her own choices? Or from the very life she was born into? You think money fixes everything, Dark. But it doesn't change who people are. And she…" She looked at me over his shoulder, her eyes cutting deep. "She is common. She is nothing. And she will ruin you."

"She is worth ten of the people you approve of," Dark shot back, his voice rising. "She works harder than any of them. She has more kindness in her little finger than your entire social circle combined. And she did not ask for this. She was sold. Just like you said. But I am the one who chose to keep her here. So if you have a problem… it is with me. Not her."

Doña Elvira stared at him, stunned into silence. For a long moment, no one breathed. The house held its breath.

Then she turned back to me, her voice dropping to a dangerous, silky tone. "You heard him. He thinks you're special. But let me tell you something, little girl. Contracts expire. Debts get paid. And when the three years are up… you will walk out of this house with nothing. And you will realize that you were never anything more than a temporary distraction. A charity case. And when he wakes up and sees what I see… you will be gone. And you will have only yourself to blame for the heartbreak."

 "Mother!" Dark roared.

She ignored him, stepping closer to me until she was inches away, her perfume overpowering, suffocating. "Stay in your place. Wear your uniform. Clean your floors. And do not — for one moment — think that you belong here. Because you don't. You never will. This world was not built for girls like you."

With that, she straightened, smoothed her jacket, and turned back to her son. "We will speak later. Privately."

She walked past us, up the stairs, each step heavy with authority. The door to her suite clicked shut. And suddenly, the silence was louder than before.

I stood frozen, her words echoing in my head like a bell tolling in an empty church. You don't belong here. You never will. Nothing but a distraction.

"Miranda…" Dark reached for me, but I flinched back.

"She's right," I whispered, my voice trembling. "She's right, isn't she? I'm just… I'm just what was bought. What was paid for. I have no right to be here. No right to… to hope."

Dark's face crumpled. He stepped toward me, his hands gentle but firm as he held my shoulders, forcing me to look at him.

"She is wrong," he said fiercely. "About everything. You are not a transaction. You are not a distraction. And you belong here more than she ever will."

"But she's your mother," I said, tears finally spilling over. "She knows you. She knows your world. And she says I'll ruin you."

"My world," Dark said, his voice low and steady, "was empty before you walked into it. Cold. Silent. And she knows that. She just doesn't want to admit that the thing that filled it… wasn't money. It was you."

He brushed a tear from my cheek with his thumb, his touch so tender it hurt.

"She sees a maid," he murmured. "I see a woman who was betrayed by her own blood and still chooses kindness. She sees a debt. I see the only thing that has ever made sense in my life. And Miranda…" He paused, searching my eyes. "Her opinion does not change the truth. And the truth is… I am falling in love with you. Not despite where you came from. But because of who you are."

My breath caught. The words hung between us — heavy, terrifying, and more beautiful than anything I had ever heard.

"Don't let her voice be louder than yours," he whispered. "Don't let her make you feel small. Not when you are the biggest thing in my world."

He pulled me into his arms then, wrapping me up so tight I could feel his heartbeat against my ear — strong, steady, real. And for the first time, I understood what Doña Elvira was so afraid of. She wasn't afraid of me. She was afraid of what I had done. I had walked into their fortress of gold and marble, and I had humanized the king.

"She will try to make your life difficult," Dark said into my hair. "She will watch. She will wait. She will look for any mistake, any flaw, any reason to send you away."

"Then I won't make mistakes," I whispered against his chest. "I'll be perfect."

Dark pulled back slightly to look at me, a sad smile touching his lips. "Miranda… don't be perfect. Be you. Because that is already more than enough. And if she can't see that… then she is the one who is blind."

He kissed my forehead, lingering there, breathing me in.

"Go to your room," he said softly. "Rest. I will speak with her. And I will make sure she knows — you are not to be spoken to like that again. Ever."

I walked away, but this time, I didn't feel small. I didn't feel like property. I felt… claimed. Not by paper. Not by money. But by him.

Hours later, as I lay in the quiet of my room, I heard raised voices from the other side of the house. Sharp. Angry. Then silence. Then footsteps. A pause outside my door. And then, the soft click of his retreating steps.

I knew the war had only just begun. His mother was powerful. Connected. Dangerous. She would not rest until I was gone. But as I touched my lips, still tingling from his touch, I realized something: I wasn't fighting alone anymore.

I had the king on my side.

And for the first time in my life… I felt like I might actually win.

The first light of dawn hadn't even touched the sky when my eyes snapped open.Five forty-five. That was the time. Sharp. Mrs. Hernandez’s voice rang in my ears like a warning bell — Mr. Zapanta does not tolerate tardiness. I swung my legs over the edge of the narrow bed, my bare feet meeting the cold wooden floor, and for a disorienting moment, I forgot where I was. The small room. The plain white walls. The silence that felt too heavy, too perfect. Then I remembered. The paper. The signature. The check my father had walked away with.I was here. Bought.I splashed cold water on my face, scrubbing away the remnants of sleep, and pulled on the uniform — black dress, white apron, stiff fabric that felt like a second skin. I stared at my reflection in the small, smudged mirror above the dresser. The girl looking back at me was pale, her eyes too big, too wary. She didn't look like Miranda Regalado anymore. She looked like… property.I slipped out of the room and into the hallway. The ho

The pen trembled in my hand, the metal cold and slippery against my damp fingers. I stared at the line waiting for my signature, the black ink glistening under the harsh light of the chandelier above, mocking me. Every word written on that paper felt like a heavy stone settling into the pit of my stomach. Two hundred thousand pesos. That was it. That was the sum total of my life. Twenty years of existence, of breathing, of growing up — all reduced to a number scribbled on a check. Sold to settle the gambling debts of the man who was supposed to protect me. My own father. "Sign it," my father said, his voice rough and impatient, avoiding my eyes as he shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "It's done already. Don't make this harder than it has to be. It's just three years, Miranda. Three years and you're free."Just three years. As if three years of my life were nothing. As if handing me over to a stranger was as simple as borrowing a cup of sugar.I lifted my gaze from the paper, my hea
