Chapter 10

Aurora’s POV

If there was one thing I needed after a grueling power play at the office with Kaelen Steele, it was my cheerful sister.

Right now, Gina was talking at ninety miles an hour while aggressively dipping French fries into chocolate milkshake.

"I'm just saying, the dead don't talk back, which makes them infinitely better company than ninety percent of the living pack males in this town," Gina said, waving a limp fry in the air for emphasis.

Chapter 12Kaelen’s POVThe raw, agonizing pain in Aurora’s eyes had just ripped a hole straight through my chest when Liam burst through the door like a bat out of hell.He didn't even knock. "Boss," Liam gasped, clutching the oak doorframe as he tried to catch his breath. "We have an emergency.""It better be a life-or-death matter, Liam. What is it?""The cartel," Liam panted, holding up a sleek black tablet. "Marcus just intercepted a digital invite. There's an exclusive out-of-town charity dinner at the Obsidian Estate. We have reliable Intel that top level members of Cartel De Imperio will be attending. It’s happening right now."Aurora wiped her cheeks quickly and cleared her throat. "A dinner? Who is attending?""That’s the catch," Liam said, looking between us quizzically. "Our system intercepted the encrypted invites, but we don't know exactly who to look out for. The guest list is written with initials, it's anonymous. But if we can get inside that dining hall, we can scan

Chapter 11Aurora’s POVI was fantastic with numbers. I'd known this since I was just a kid. So, for the last three days, I had locked myself in the small, glass-walled research annex at Steele Security and looked at all related data concerning the cartel members, their home address, their favourite bar, their barbing shops, etc. I knew sooner or later, something would come up. But that wasn't all the reason I had to hide in my new office. Actually, I didn't want to go to the main floor and risk running into Kaelen. I was doing a magnificent job of avoiding him, but my mind was a complete mess.Every couple of hours, I found myself picking up my phone to call Gina. I checked on her a couple of times, asking about her day, her work at the coroner’s office, and just making sure she was completely okay. She also helped me take my mind off things for a bit. My sweet, bubbly little sister was the only family I had left, and the guilt of almost crossing the line with Kaelen in the cab

I had spent the last twenty minutes pretending to eat a salad, but mostly I was just using my fork to stab a cherry tomato over and over again like it had personally offended me."Right. Very true," I mumbled, my mind drifting back to the previous night and how cold Kaelen was towards me earlier that day. I wasn't sorry that I tracked the phone and got information about the next route of the cartel. Actually, I was very fulfilled that I w

Chapter 09Aurora’s POVI had a very simple rule for survival: when a brooding, seven-foot-tall Alpha werewolf tells you to stay home because you’ve had a "messy day," you put on your tightest pencil skirt, your highest heels, and you march right into his office.Mainly because I refused to let Kaelen Steele think he had the power to make me hide. But also because staying alone in my hotel room with nothing but my thoughts, a mediocre room-service club sandwich, and twelve years of unanswered questions was going to drive me completely insane. So, there I was.I stood in the lobby of Steele Security, smoothing down the front of my black skirt. I’d paired it with a soft, sleeveless cream blouse that sat a little lower at the collar than usual. I hadn’t done it for Kaelen—or so I lied to myself—but the air conditioning in the building was blasting, and my skin felt hyper-sensitive. I took a deep breath, clutching my tablet as I stepped into the elevator.“Keep it professional,” I chan

Chapter 08Aurora’s POVI didn’t sleep. Not really. How could I? I was currently wrapped in Kaelen Steele’s oversized, stupidly warm flannel shirt, smelling his intoxicating scent while lying in a dusty bed in the middle of nowhere.Every time I closed my eyes, I kept seeing the raw, wounded look on his face when he saw the mark. He actually thought some man had marked me. The irony was so big I could have choked on it. Sylvester wouldn't know how to mark a female properly if the instructions were tattooed on his forehead. He was a lousy lover and an even worse fiance. Somehow, despite how broken and betrayed I was, I couldn't help but he grateful that I'd bumped into them in that hotel kitchen. Shaking the silly thoughts off, I looked around but I couldn't see much. The cabin was pitch-black now, and the temperature had dropped so low I could see my own breath puffing out in little white clouds. I huddled deeper into the blankets, shivering.Suddenly, a low groan came down the c

Chapter 07Aurora’s POVI froze instantly and followed his eyes up my wrist, seeing the glaring black nature's tattoo which was the permanent mating mark. OopsHe dropped my hands so fast you’d think I was made of hot coal.I scrambled to pull my sleeve down, my fingers tangling in the stupid silver bracelets I wore to hide my secret. “Is that…a Mating Mark?” He choked out, eyes wide. My heart was practically in my mouth. I tried to turn my wrist away, to bury it under the fabric of my top, but who was I kidding? It was too late. The mark was out of the bag. "There’s no point," he muttered as he watched me hopelessly try to hide the mark. Then slowly let go of my waist, stepping back. "I’ve already seen it."The sudden loss of his touch left me feeling strangely empty and freezing in the cabin. I pulled my sleeve down all the way, clutching my arm to my chest as I watched him.Kaelen swayed slightly, a hand going to his temple as if he was just feeling the effect of whatever drug
