I am a good girl.
I mean….I was a good girl. Until today.
My name is Loretta. Loretta Rea Sterling. The first child of George Sterling. Being born into the Sterlings family meant many things: power, generational wealth, fame, you name it
But being born as a girl meant only one thing, my life will never be mine. Not fully at least.
So I learnt to be invisible. For eighteen years, I mastered the art of being unnoticed.
Quiet daughter.
Dutiful child
Obedient niece.
Good, Sweet, agreeable Loretta.
It worked perfectly until a few weeks ago, when fate placed me somewhere I should never have been in
My father's office.
I witnessed something I shouldn't have, I heard a conversation that wasn't meant for my ears, and now... I'm standing in a courtroom full of people eager to hear my testimony.
“This way Miss” the kind officer says to me. I nodded silently and follow
I have never had so many eyes on me at once before, even the judge watches from above like an eager executioner as I make my way to the witness box
But none of these people terrifies me as much as...Him
“Don't look Loretta. Don't look” I whispered to myself like a mantra, taking my seat in the witness box
The hairs on the back of my neck stands.
He's watching me.
‘I can't do this. I can't do....” I'm about to turn back when...
“Miss Sterling,” A loud voice cuts through the murmurs in the courtroom. “Please proceed to tell the court what you witnessed that night.”
A heavy ball of lead clogs my throat. I try to pry my lips open, my brain sends the signal but my body fails to respond. I can't open my mouth let alone speak. Cold sweat trickles down my spine as I sit there in frozen silence
God not now. Please not now
I can't mess this trial up. There was too much at stake, too much to lose
Abel...Abel could die.
“I....I...” My voice shakes and my vision blurs with the tears I was holding back. “I saw him”
The silence that hangs in the air of the courtroom is so thick, I could almost reach out and touch it. Camera shutters clicks, a few people whisper and I swallow before continuing
“H...He picked up the paper knife on my father's desk, and stabbed him with it”
Collective gasps echo throughout the courtroom, and inside me something breaks. Something irreversible
The pricking sensation at the back of my neck intensifies. My entire body freezes out of fear
One mistake. All it would take was one mistake and everything would go up in shambles
I would lose something more important than my family's empire.
My fingers tremble against my thigh and I quickly hide them before anyone notices
The prosecutor looks behind me, towards where He's seated. I don't look back. I don't dare to
“Miss Sterling here has testified against you, saying you are responsible for the near murder of George Sterling." He pauses carefully “What do you say about this Mr Fitzpatrick?”
Silence
The silence was louder than anything I have ever heard. If the bead of sweat on my forehead dropped to the floor, I was certain everyone would hear it
The gravel strikes thrice. Bells ring in my ears and the loud silence threatens to turn me deaf
“Elion Fitzpatrick, You are hereby sentenced to three years in prison...”
I tune out the rest of the sentence. I can't hear it. I can't breathe. I cannot live with myself after what I have done
An officer approaches, guiding me out of the witness box, but as he does, I make the biggest mistake by following my intuition. I turn and look
At him
Elion
And my heart forgets how to beat
The courtroom has erupted into chaos around him. Lawyers begin leaning in, speaking fast and making calls, some reporters are surging forward
But all through it, Elion Fitzpatrick sits completely still, His huge frame filling up the seat, larger than the courtroom, bigger than life
And his eyes....
His eyes were focused on me. Not the lawyer trying to get his attention, not the reporters bombarding him with questions, not even the officer who was approaching him with handcuffs
Me.
Quiet, agreeable Loretta
Evil, wicked Loretta
My legs wobble, and oxygen thins around me.
Those coal black eyes give away the emotion his calm, unamused face doesn't; Anger. Boundless, unfathomable anger
If eyes alone could kill, my throat would have been slit open and I'd be dying a slow torturous death by now
I tear my gaze away from him and run out of the courtroom while I still can. I don't look back, but I know he's watching me
Just as I know with a chilling, bone-deep certainty that this wasn't over. Elion Fitzpatrick was going to find me, and he'd make me pay
It was only a matter of time
LORETTA “Shit” Elion’s reaction was instant.Immediately, the light beamed in on us, and he pulled me tighter against his chest, one large hand flying up to shield my face from the light, pressing it into the crook of his neck. He pressed me against the wall too, his broad body completely shielding mine as he yanked the hem of my soaked dress down over my thighs. My heart hammered without restraint, my adrenaline was high, Elion's breath was hot and uneven against my ear. I tried to pull back but he held me firmer, protecting me. “Stay still,” he whispered, voice low and rough. “Don’t make a sound.”I could hear the sound of the car drive farther down the street, becoming more distant, my eyes squeezed shut as my body trembled around him. The risk that we could be caught in a compromising position somehow made everything more intense. “Do you think whoever was driving that car saw us?” I asked quietly, my voice almost muffled I couldn't see his face, but I could tell his jaw was
LORETTA It wasn't a sniffIt was more. Elion brought my ruined panties to his nose and drew in a long, unhurried breath, like a man inhaling the scent of something sacred. “What are you doing?” It was a silly question to ask, being that I could see what exactly he was doing but I was running low on coherent thought and coherent sentencesHis eyes fluttered half-closed. “Memorizing you, baby” The deep growl of his voice and the raw hunger in his face made my core clench hardA small whimper escaped me. Greedily, I grounded my body against him, asking... begging “Fuck, Rea,” he hissed out, voice as rough as gravel. “You smell so much better than I imagined. I need more, fuck I need more of you”Heat flooded my cheeks, but I didn’t look away. I couldn’t. Elion had imagined this before? OhOhhhWith his dark hungry eyes fixed on mine, he tucked the torn lace into the back pocket of his suit trousers, His free hand slid up my thigh, pushing the soaked fabric of my dress higher until co
LORETTA The first taste of Elion's mouth was devastating in every sense of the wordThe second made me forget why I was even angry to begin with, and by the third....I didn't know my own nameThe kiss wasn't gentle, it wasn't even fair, not with the knowing way his lips and tongue captured mine prisoner, taking absolute control over meThe rain continued to fall around us, heavier now. The sky was dark, the city kept moving, but when Elion kissed me, nothing else excited me except his mouth on mineHe tasted of everything I've ever yearned for, of passion, and ecstacy and bliss and recklessness and so much more than I could fully process His mouth was hard against mine, his hands framing my jaw, a downpour of rain running between us, I raised a hand to clutch his shirt, to push him away but instead, I realized that I was only pulling him closer to my body so that my tender breasts flattened against his hard chestAnd so help me God, I could not stop. If a gun was pointed to my head
LORETTA He crossed the distance between us with long, furious strides that made the world narrow down to himThe traffic disappeared, the people on the sidewalk disappeared, even the ache in my heart disappeared Even though Elion was striding towards me with a dead look in his eyes, the first thing I felt — actually felt was relief He came. For one reckless, almost humiliating second of it all, I wanted to break into a run and wrap my hands around him, to let his warm hands and scent comfort me“Elion” my breath caught when he reached me and grabbed me by the shoulder, his large hands closing around my body hard but not hard enough to hurtI could see the dark energy rolling over him in waves, it should have scared me and it did, but...those coal dark eyes swept over me frantically, going over my face, my neck, my arms, down and back up againIt took me a second to understand what Elion was doing, and when I did realize that he was checking to see if I was okay, my heart melted in
LORETTA “Who do I need to murder?”I blinked “What?””Your voice sounds like my cat's chew toy” My brows bunched together, I was about to ask what a chew toy sounds like only for her to go on with something even worse“Tell me Lo, who do I need to murder? I know a guy who knows a guy that can get
ELIONThe second I felt her pulse jump beneath my grip, something beastly inside me strained against its leash. That part of me that I spent three days trying and failing to bury. “Tell me something, Rea,” I breathed into the space between us “Do you enjoy making me choose between my sanity and yo
LORETTA The office fell silent. Not quiet, silentThe kind of silence in spooky graveyards at night, I was pretty sure that if an office pin dropped to the floor, we all would be able to hear itMy eyes swept over the spacious expanses of the office, past the four men seated behind the large hardw
