Elliot POV

The house was really quiet after eleven.

The parents had taken their car back to the city hotel. So the main estate was still, peaceful under the star-filled sky.

Down in the second-floor nursery suite, Leo and Luke slept soundly in their cribs. The silent audio monitor on my phone picked up their breathing.

I walked out onto the master balcony, my leather slippers silent against the stone tiles.

The night air smelled of salt and crushed pine. The moonlit water on the Pacific shimmer

Sebastian POVI looked at the tablet screen sitting on the wooden nightstand. The green banner shone softly against the wood, the words showing the change in Elliot's internal system. Three weeks. Our time on the island. The complete silence, the ocean breeze, and the deep, lasting mark I made on his neck.I glanced down at the man lying under me on the silk sheets.Elliot's hazel eyes were wide, his lips slightly open as he looked from the tablet back to my face. He did not look afraid. He did not look like a captain thinking about hiding a scan from a team doctor. His chest moved up and down slowly, his hand coming up to rest flat on my jaw."Sebastian," Elliot said softly, his thumb running along the edge of my cheekbone."I see it, baby," I whispered, my voice thick.I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against his. The golden thread of our bond pulsed with a flowing warmth, filling my mind with his complete trust. No barriers. No lingering fear from years of running. Just the q

The silent audio monitor on my phone picked up their breathing.I walked out onto the master balcony, my leather slippers silent against the stone tiles. The night air smelled of salt and crushed pine. The moonlit water on the Pacific shimmered like a sheet of silver, hitting the cliff rocks in a gentle, steady rhythm.I rested my forearms on the wrought-iron rail. I was wearing a black sweater and cotton trousers. My body felt light. There was no ice soreness, no muscle aches from morning skate drills, just a deep, restful calm that settled into my chest.A soft step sounded on the stone behind me.Sebastian slid both arms around my waist, pulling my back flush against his chest. He wore dark grey sweatpants, his bare torso radiati

Sebastian POVThe smell of burned cedar and cooked steak moved across the stone patio, mixing with the salty air coming from the ocean far below.I was next to the stainless steel grill, turning four thick pieces of meat using a pair of long tools. Heat came from the grill, making my skin feel warm under the afternoon sun.Elliot’s father came close to the grill, putting two bottles of local beer on the stone counter. He wore a beige shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked at the meat, then looked out over the blue Pacific."You have a touch with the grill, Wolfe," Elliot’s father said, taking a drink from his bottle."My father showed me," I replied, flipping the piece of meat. "He believed in using cedar planks for every type of meat."Elliot’s father laughed. "Six years ago, I thought my son would live alone in hotel rooms. I thought the game would take him until there was nothing left."He turned his head, his eyes getting softer as he looked through the glass doors

Elliot POVThe morning sun shone on the Pacific, spreading a sheet of gold over the carefully kept lawn of our estate.I stood by the stone patio rail, drinking slowly from my mug. Steam rose from the coffee, warming my face against the cool ocean breeze. Behind me, the glass doors to the study were open. My laptop screen shone on the mahogany desk, showing the list for the coming entry draft. On the lawn, two workers in black shirts were removing the last wooden stakes from the summer setup. In their place was a thirty-foot-square of shiny white synthetic ice, surrounded by low blue plastic boards.Sebastian was in the middle of the white area wearing a T-shirt and dark shorts. He had a wooden hockey stick in one hand, his boots making soft taps on the smooth plastic.I walked down the stone stairs, my leather loafers making no sound on the grass."You really put a rink in the backyard, Wolfe?" I asked, stopping near the border.Sebastian looked up, a smile appearing on his face. "It

Elliot POVThe cool arena air hit my face as the glass doors opened to the tunnel.Eighteen thousand fans cheered, their voices creating a rumble that vibrated through the concrete beneath my leather shoes. Green and silver spotlights swept across the ice, reflecting off the dark presentation carpet laid down from the bench to center ice.I straightened my grey suit jacket, my fingers adjusting the silver tie at my collar. Beside me, Sebastian stood in a navy suit. He held Luke securely against his chest, the baby dressed in a tiny green sweater.I held Leo in my arms. My son’s blue eyes were wide open, looking around at the stadium lights without a single tear. In his fist, he still clutched the torn golden "C" patch from Sebastian’s old Kings jersey.Sebastian set his hand flat against my back, his palm warm and steady. "You ready for this, baby?""Never thought I'd see my number there without a helmet on, hubby," I said, a faint smile touching my lips."You earned every inch of tha

Sebastian POVThe glass screen glowed under the morning sun. I tapped the terminal, bringing up the encrypted file transmission.Aris's dark digital seal appeared at the top of the page. My thumb scrolled past the header, my eyes scanning the black text. The federal transfer orders were complete. Arthur Devereux had arrived at the ADX Florence facility in Colorado at four this morning. No visitors allowed. No media access. No phone privileges outside his counsel.Further down the document, a second file opened.Julian’s intake records from the medical pen in Terre Haute loaded onto the screen. His name sat below three counts of distributing Class-A compounds. Two different facilities. Two different time zones. Zero line of communication between them for the rest of their lives. The system that had hunted Elliot for six years was completely gone. The men who built it were locked behind six feet of reinforced concrete.I stood on the stone terrace, the ocean breeze cool against my chest

Elliot POV For a few seconds, I could not move.I stood behind the curtain with my hand clenched in the fabric, staring down at the black SUV. Elliot POV By the time my teammates came back into the locker room, I had my expression under control. That was the only part of me I controlled. Elliot POV There were many things I hated about Sebastian Wolfe, but the worst was the way he made silence feel crowded. The moment he turned that lock, the air in the empty room changed, thickening and pressing until every breath I took felt like I was breathing him in. I stood beside my locker i

Elliot POV I had learned a long time ago not to want things that could be taken. Hockey was the one exception I had allowed myself. I spent six years making sure no one ever found out why it cost me more than it cost anyone else. The arena was loud enough to shake the bones in my body. I could hea
