Chapter 1

When I opened my eyes again, I saw the same orthopaedic surgeon who had treated me the last time when I fell from the sixth floor. He adjusted his glasses, staring at me with a look of sheer disbelief.

"Young man, you still have a long life ahead of you. Sure, your body can handle a lot, but this… this isn't the way to test its limits. You jumped from the tenth floor and still survived!

"It's truly a miracle. Your ancestors must've done everything they could to save you."

Before leaving the room, the surgeon reminded me again to cherish my life. I wanted to tell him that it was just my life—it didn't matter. Besides, dying was something I had a hard time executing.

The next second, the hospital room door was pushed open with a bang.

Leon Sylvester, the eldest son of the family and Henry Sylvester's biological brother, walked in. Beside him was, of course, the innocent-looking Henry.

"Marcel, are you insane? If you want to die, just do it somewhere else without terrorizing Henry! He still has to prepare for his SAT!" Leon shouted at me.

I was helpless, too. If I could, I would've chosen to die immediately.

The first time I was close to death, the system found me. It refused to let me die. Instead, I was supposed to find hope in living again before I could have a normal death.

I lied to the system and told it that I desperately wanted to live, but it saw right through me. That explained how I walked away almost unharmed despite jumping from the tenth floor.

I looked up at the two brothers standing together, their bond seemingly unbreakable.

I got out of bed and solemnly asked, "Leon, can you tell me a way where I can die for sure, then? Can you kill me again, Henry?"

Perhaps a homicide could be exempted from the system's rule.

My question seemed to frighten Henry. He yelped and hid behind Leon. "Leon, w-what's he talking about? He's freaking me out. Is something wrong with him? I-I mean, I can't even kill an ant. Why is he asking me to kill him?

"Leon, I'm scared I'll have nightmares from this and that it will affect my performance on the SAT."

He was so terrified that he started crying, struggling to catch his breath.

Then, I received a slap. When Leon's hand struck my face, I remained so calm that all I could think about was dying.

I asked the system, "Tell me, how am I supposed to find the desire to keep living when these are my circumstances?"

The Sylvester family could've simply let me leave, but for the sake of appearances, they kept me as their adopted son. Without even realizing it, they kept hurting me again and again.

The system didn't answer, and I was used to it. It only ever appeared when I was about to die.

My lack of resistance caught Leon off guard, as if he regretted hitting me so hard. But the moment he heard Henry's sobs, the anger returned to his eyes.

"Marcel, you've made mistake after mistake. This time, I want you to go home and reflect in the basement!"

"Okay," I said obediently. After returning home, I went straight to the basement without uttering a single word.

When the last bit of light above my head disappeared, all I could see was darkness. According to what I'd read, a person could only be driven to the brink of death after going seven days without food or water.

Thus, I hoped they would lock me up for seven days. That way, I should be able to bypass the system and finally die.

Every day, I relied on the voices outside to determine the time. By the sixth day, I was already so weak from hunger that I could barely move.

The basement was filled with the stench of my own waste and the musty smell of the poorly ventilated space. The system had yet to appear. Was I finally going to die?

Just then, the basement door creaked open, and blinding sunlight poured in, enveloping my body.

It was my adoptive parents—Alan Sylvester and Margot Sweeney—and Henry. When they saw the filthy, disgusting state of the basement, they turned around and vomited.

Only after that did they look back at me, lying there, barely alive.

Henry's voice came from above. "Mom, Dad… I messed up. I forgot that Leon had had him locked up in the basement."

Margot couldn't hold back anymore. She pulled me into her arms, shielding me as if she wanted to protect me.Alan frowned and reminded her, "No matter what, Henry is still our biological son."I found it ironic. Leon was also his biological son. So why wasn't he standing up for him? It seemed that it was never about the blood they shared, but pride.Margot was disappointed. She glared intensely at Alan. "So what? He hurt Marcel and Leon! That's an undeniable fact! Our family can very well survive without him! Now, transfer the money back to Marcel!"So, under her supervision, that large sum appeared in my bank account once again. This time, there were no conditions attached. I accepted it without stubbornly returning it.Alan wanted to say more, but Margot was afraid he would say something that would upset me again. Without hesitation, she pushed him straight out of the hospital room. Then, she turned back and looked at me for a long time. In her eyes, I saw guilt, pain, and regr

While Leon was still hospitalized, my admission results came out. I had been accepted to a university in a coastal city, as far away from this place as possible. I was extremely pleased with the result. Before leaving, I went to the hospital to visit Leon. The injury on his chest was severe, and he was still under observation. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. He struggled to sit up."Marcel, I'm so happy you came to see me," he said, grinning.Sitting in the chair, I looked at him calmly and said, "I'm leaving soon."His smile faded. "Marcel, you really don't want to stay anymore?"I opened my mouth to tell Leon about my university acceptance, but before I could speak, the door swung open, and Alan and Margot hurried in.When they saw me, their tired faces gleamed with a trace of surprise. They rushed over to me. Margot sized me up and down, and when she noticed I had gained some weight, her eyes turned red."Marcel, can we just let bygones be bygones?" she asked. "The fac

When the exams ended, I walked out of the hall with the crowd. As expected, Alan and Margot were waiting outside with a bouquet. They were dressed to the nines, walking toward me with proud smiles on their faces."You're amazing, Marcel! No matter how you do, you'll always be our pride!""We've prepared a celebration dinner for you. Get in the car."Behind them was a brand-new luxury car of the latest model, worth millions of dollars, drawing envious stares from everyone around. Some envied Alan and Margot, and some envied me for having them as my parents.Under everyone's gaze, I discarded the bouquet she handed me."I'm busy. Goodbye," I said simply before walking away. The flowers landed near a trash bin, losing their freshness as they wilted.I returned to my apartment, planning to get some rest, but I ran into a familiar face outside. It was Henry. He looked thinner than before, his eyes hollow and devoid of any light. The moment he saw me, hatred twisted across his visag

Henry appeared as if he had completely forgotten about the photos. He shook his head desperately, denying everything. Lost was the arrogance he had displayed earlier. Now, he looked wronged and pitiful. "Leon, I don't know what he's talking about. I didn't do anything!"If this had been before the drowning incident, the Sylvesters might have still believed Henry's words. Now, their trust in him had vanished."Don't worry, Marcel. Your mother and I will look into this properly," Alan said. "We'll give you an answer."I sure hoped they would investigate it. It would have been better if Henry had never spread those photos. After all, no one wanted their private images circulating."The SAT is coming," I reminded them.Alan and Margot looked at me seriously, as if anticipating me to ask them for something so they could make up for the guilt they felt toward me.I continued, "Henry's your son. He should stay at the Sylvester residence. I'll move into the place you prepared for him. I

Shoved to the ground, Henry stared at Alan and Margot in shock. Then he screamed at the top of his lungs. "I'm your real son, damn it! If you don't know what I went through for the past 18 years, I'll tell you everything, word for word!"My adoptive parents abused me every day. They forced me to steal. I never had enough food, never had proper clothes, and I even had to endure being spied on by my adoptive father…"All of this was because of you! If you had protected me back then, none of this would've happened!"I couldn't deny that Henry's past was tragic. It was also the first time he had openly shown resentment toward Alan and Margot. The infirmary fell silent.Alan and Margot were stunned. They had always believed the son they brought home would be gentle yet resilient at heart. But Henry was nothing like the person they had imagined, and they couldn't accept the stark contrast.Once Henry finished speaking, his grievances and pain lingered in the room. Alan and Margot were

It almost happened this time. Just a few seconds more, and I would definitely meet death.Unfortunately, just when I felt my soul was about to leave my body, the janitor cleaning the pool found me. The next thing I knew, I woke up in the school infirmary.Sitting beside my bed were Alan, Margot, and Leon. For some reason, they looked at me, their gazes complicated."I wasn't trying to die in the school pool on purpose," I said.Margot burst into tears and pulled me into her arms. I didn't cry, but she did."Oh, Marcel, it's all my fault. I'm so sorry," she cried out. "I only realized it now that we might've misunderstood you over many things recently. My good son, can you forgive us? Can we go back to how things were?"Wait. Did that mean that they had discovered Henry's true colors? But so what? The pain they had caused me couldn't be erased with just a few words of apology and some tears.I let Margot hold me for as long as she wanted as I watched Leon pull out a gift. It was
