Chapter 2

작가: Ever Thousand
The other day, after locking me in the basement, Leon went on a trip. Henry was busy with his studies, so his forgetting about me sounded perfectly logical.

Alan and Margot didn't blame him. Instead, they shifted the blame to me. "Marcel, why didn't you ask for help? Were you trying to die in the basement and drag our family into a scandal?"

To them, my death would become nothing more than a scandal.

I curled up in the last clean corner of the basement, my eyes hollow. "Can you lock me up for one more day, please?"

Just one more day, and I would die. Unfortunately, I didn't get my wish.

Alan and Margot looked at me like they had seen a ghost. They immediately had someone carry me out of the basement.

After six days without seeing sunlight, I had become sallow and thin, looking more like a dying tree than a high school senior.

They fed and nurtured me until I gained back a pound, and only after that did they send me back to school to prepare for the SAT.

Henry and I were both in the senior class. When our homeroom teacher, Mr. Freeman, saw me, he frowned and pointed to the seat in the very back corner.

"You've been gone for a long time. I thought you'd given up on the SAT."

I gripped the straps of my backpack and stated the truth as if I were talking about the weather. "My family locked me up in the basement."

Then came Henry's wailing. "Marcel, what are you talking about? If this is because you're upset I'm back, you should just come at me! Why would you slander our family in public?"

I had to say, Henry was much smarter than I was. He had only just transferred here a short while ago, yet he had already become the favorite in the class.

So, the students who liked him all turned against me. They decided that, as an adopted son, my very genes were flawed and that I was twisted inside.

Frankly, I didn't know what I had said wrong. After all, they really had me locked in the basement. Was that not true?

Amid the endless accusations, I looked at Henry calmly and said, "You guys really should've kept me locked up for another day."

I was only one day away from dying. If I died, my suffering would finally be over.

For some reason, Henry seemed terrorized by my words and cried even harder, looking more wronged than ever.

In the middle of the chaos, Mr. Freeman tapped on the blackboard and silenced the class with his sharp gaze. "Silence! Marcel, come to the office with me."

I left the classroom under my classmates' mocking, gloating stares and followed Mr. Freeman out. The office was quiet, leaving the two of us alone.

He sat down and gestured for me to speak. "Tell me exactly what happened while you were away from school."

I froze and looked at Mr. Freeman. His gaze was sincere.

I had always thought teachers were like gardeners, nurturing and guiding their students. I believed he was the only person who cared enough to check in on me after Henry returned to the family.

Thus, leaving out the system, I briefly told him everything that had happened during that time.

After listening, Mr. Freeman picked up his phone and pressed the button to stop the recording. He no longer looked at me. Instead, he turned away and called Alan and Margot.

I stared at him for a long time. Once the call ended, I asked him, "Were you just tattling on me to my adoptive parents, sir?"

Alan and Margot were respected business people who, naturally, cared about their reputation more than anything. If people learned that they had locked me in the basement, it would affect their business.

They would never allow something like that to spread, but none of it surprised me. To them, it was perfectly normal.

The sincerity in Mr. Freeman's eyes vanished, displaced by a sense of righteousness. "Marcel, I wasn't tattling on you. I'm just asking them to pay more attention to your mental state. You're acting like you have some kind of issue."

Oh, what a coincidence. I, too, felt like something was mentally wrong with me.

I nodded and no longer pressed the issue. Instead, I waited quietly for Alan and Margot's arrival.

Margot couldn't hold back anymore. She pulled me into her arms, shielding me as if she wanted to protect me.Alan frowned and reminded her, "No matter what, Henry is still our biological son."I found it ironic. Leon was also his biological son. So why wasn't he standing up for him? It seemed that it was never about the blood they shared, but pride.Margot was disappointed. She glared intensely at Alan. "So what? He hurt Marcel and Leon! That's an undeniable fact! Our family can very well survive without him! Now, transfer the money back to Marcel!"So, under her supervision, that large sum appeared in my bank account once again. This time, there were no conditions attached. I accepted it without stubbornly returning it.Alan wanted to say more, but Margot was afraid he would say something that would upset me again. Without hesitation, she pushed him straight out of the hospital room. Then, she turned back and looked at me for a long time. In her eyes, I saw guilt, pain, and regr

While Leon was still hospitalized, my admission results came out. I had been accepted to a university in a coastal city, as far away from this place as possible. I was extremely pleased with the result. Before leaving, I went to the hospital to visit Leon. The injury on his chest was severe, and he was still under observation. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. He struggled to sit up."Marcel, I'm so happy you came to see me," he said, grinning.Sitting in the chair, I looked at him calmly and said, "I'm leaving soon."His smile faded. "Marcel, you really don't want to stay anymore?"I opened my mouth to tell Leon about my university acceptance, but before I could speak, the door swung open, and Alan and Margot hurried in.When they saw me, their tired faces gleamed with a trace of surprise. They rushed over to me. Margot sized me up and down, and when she noticed I had gained some weight, her eyes turned red."Marcel, can we just let bygones be bygones?" she asked. "The fac

When the exams ended, I walked out of the hall with the crowd. As expected, Alan and Margot were waiting outside with a bouquet. They were dressed to the nines, walking toward me with proud smiles on their faces."You're amazing, Marcel! No matter how you do, you'll always be our pride!""We've prepared a celebration dinner for you. Get in the car."Behind them was a brand-new luxury car of the latest model, worth millions of dollars, drawing envious stares from everyone around. Some envied Alan and Margot, and some envied me for having them as my parents.Under everyone's gaze, I discarded the bouquet she handed me."I'm busy. Goodbye," I said simply before walking away. The flowers landed near a trash bin, losing their freshness as they wilted.I returned to my apartment, planning to get some rest, but I ran into a familiar face outside. It was Henry. He looked thinner than before, his eyes hollow and devoid of any light. The moment he saw me, hatred twisted across his visag

Henry appeared as if he had completely forgotten about the photos. He shook his head desperately, denying everything. Lost was the arrogance he had displayed earlier. Now, he looked wronged and pitiful. "Leon, I don't know what he's talking about. I didn't do anything!"If this had been before the drowning incident, the Sylvesters might have still believed Henry's words. Now, their trust in him had vanished."Don't worry, Marcel. Your mother and I will look into this properly," Alan said. "We'll give you an answer."I sure hoped they would investigate it. It would have been better if Henry had never spread those photos. After all, no one wanted their private images circulating."The SAT is coming," I reminded them.Alan and Margot looked at me seriously, as if anticipating me to ask them for something so they could make up for the guilt they felt toward me.I continued, "Henry's your son. He should stay at the Sylvester residence. I'll move into the place you prepared for him. I

Shoved to the ground, Henry stared at Alan and Margot in shock. Then he screamed at the top of his lungs. "I'm your real son, damn it! If you don't know what I went through for the past 18 years, I'll tell you everything, word for word!"My adoptive parents abused me every day. They forced me to steal. I never had enough food, never had proper clothes, and I even had to endure being spied on by my adoptive father…"All of this was because of you! If you had protected me back then, none of this would've happened!"I couldn't deny that Henry's past was tragic. It was also the first time he had openly shown resentment toward Alan and Margot. The infirmary fell silent.Alan and Margot were stunned. They had always believed the son they brought home would be gentle yet resilient at heart. But Henry was nothing like the person they had imagined, and they couldn't accept the stark contrast.Once Henry finished speaking, his grievances and pain lingered in the room. Alan and Margot were

It almost happened this time. Just a few seconds more, and I would definitely meet death.Unfortunately, just when I felt my soul was about to leave my body, the janitor cleaning the pool found me. The next thing I knew, I woke up in the school infirmary.Sitting beside my bed were Alan, Margot, and Leon. For some reason, they looked at me, their gazes complicated."I wasn't trying to die in the school pool on purpose," I said.Margot burst into tears and pulled me into her arms. I didn't cry, but she did."Oh, Marcel, it's all my fault. I'm so sorry," she cried out. "I only realized it now that we might've misunderstood you over many things recently. My good son, can you forgive us? Can we go back to how things were?"Wait. Did that mean that they had discovered Henry's true colors? But so what? The pain they had caused me couldn't be erased with just a few words of apology and some tears.I let Margot hold me for as long as she wanted as I watched Leon pull out a gift. It was
