Chapter 2

작가: Bluestone
Frank paused with the car keys in his hands.

"Fine. I'll bring Mike over the day after tomorrow then."

"Don't bother."

He spun around, disbelief flashing across his face.

"Are you firing me? Who the hell do you think you are? Ms. Grant hired me herself. I answer to her, not you!

"You're just a freeloader living off your wife's money. You don't call the shots around here!"

His voice echoed through the garage.

I ignored him and pulled out my phone.

"You've worked 25 days this month," I said. "At $300 a day, that's $7,500."

I made the transfer with a few taps.

His phone buzzed almost immediately.

"I've paid you in full. We're done here."

Frank checked his phone. When he looked up, his jaw was clenched.

"Fine," he spat. "You'll regret this."

He stormed back into the garage, throwing his things into a bag while muttering curses.

I simply folded my arms and watched.

As he turned to leave, I held out my hand.

"The car keys. And the access card."

Frank glared at me, then reached into his pocket and slammed both items onto the hood.

"Happy now?" he sneered. "Men who live off their wives never end well."

I hit the garage door switch. His shouting faded as the door rolled shut.

I'd paid Frank well over the past three years—well enough that he'd never bothered looking for another job. He wasn't going to find another job this easy that paid nearly as much.

We'll see who gets the last laugh.

The next morning, I went out for a walk.

The retirees chatting in the neighborhood park went quiet when they saw me.

Hands froze over chessboards. Heads turned. Every face showed the same look of contempt.

I kept walking, but the whispers followed.

"That's him," a retiree muttered. "Huh. I wouldn't have guessed."

"Don't let appearances fool you. I heard he's got a terrible temper, and he treats Frank like dirt. He yells at him all day and won't even let the poor man eat a proper meal."

"That's not all. They say he's been keeping a young mistress behind Vivian's back, using her hard-earned money to support the affair."

"Poor woman. She works so hard, and this is what she gets in return."

I turned to face them. The residents quickly looked away, suddenly finding the chessboards far more interesting.

I kept walking. Outside the property management office, two security guards stopped smoking and exchanged glances. They whispered to each other and shot me disgusted looks.

I ignored them and walked on.

It was easy to guess who was behind all this.

Frank spent most afternoons hanging around the neighborhood while waiting for Vivian to get off work, chatting with anyone who'd spare him the time.

If anyone could turn an entire neighborhood against me, it was Frank.

Everyone knew him. Compared to him, I was practically a stranger.

By the time I pulled up outside the domestic staffing agency downtown, I'd already settled on my next move.

The branch manager, Bella Kurt, greeted me with a smile and a glass of water. I took a sip and got straight to the point.

"Frank crossed the line. He had a terrible attitude, skimmed money off the household shopping, and spread false rumors about me throughout the neighborhood."

The smile vanished from Bella's face. She sprang to her feet immediately and bowed deeply.

“I'm very sorry, Mr. Reed," she said quickly. "We'll deal with this immediately. He won't be taking another job through our agency."

I nodded.

"I need a replacement as soon as possible. A driver who can also work as my personal assistant. Someone competent, professional, and trustworthy."

Bella opened her drawer and pulled out a stack of files.

"I'd recommend Jack Smith." She tapped on one of the files. "He's worked as a driver for several senior executives and is highly professional. In fact, he's free this afternoon. I can send him to work with you for the day."

I agreed to her suggestion.

Just minutes later, sirens wailed through the neighborhood. The cops had arrived.Frank finally lost his composure. He ran toward me, but Jack blocked his path."Lucas, please, I was wrong. I know I was. I'll pay you back for everything I took. Please don't let them take me away."Mike stood there in a daze, completely shell-shocked."I'm not a thief… Viv gave this to me…"Vivian stepped in front of me, her eyes filled with disgust.Frank turned to her desperately."Ms. Grant, you know me. You trusted me enough to hire me. Please help me out. I've always treated you like my daughter. Doesn't that count for something?"Tears rolled down his face as he broke down in sobs.Vivian let out a scoff."Don't flatter yourself, Frank. Without Lucas, you never would've gotten this job. Also, Lucas was the one who approved your salary. Technically speaking, he was your boss."He paid you well above market rate, yet this is how you repay him? By stealing from him and conspiring with y

The laughter lingered long after the video ended. Mocking comments echoed through the hallway."So the whole thing was a big misunderstanding!""Oh my God, Mike actually threw himself at the electrician!""And after all that, he still had the nerve to accuse Ms. Grant? What a shameless bastard!"Mike stood rooted to the spot, his face burning red. He looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole.Beside him, Frank wasn't faring any better. The swagger he had all afternoon was gone.Still, the old man refused to back down. He jabbed a finger at us."Don't think you can fool me," he snapped. "Videos can be edited. This isn't over. Once we get to the bottom of this, we'll be back. My son isn't going to be made a fool of!"He grabbed Mike by the arm and started toward the elevator.Halfway there, Frank smacked Mike across the back."You idiot! I showed you her picture! How could you mistake someone else for her?"Mike clenched his teeth but said nothing.Frank gave hi

The noise had drawn half the building out of their apartments.Frank's usual gossip circle stood at the front, whispering among themselves.Vivian frowned. "Mike? Who on earth is Mike?"Before Frank could reply, Mike stepped forward. He spoke softly, as though they shared some private memory."Viv… don't you remember what happened last week?"You promised you'd divorce Lucas. You said he could never satisfy you, and that you wanted to be with me instead."Vivian stared at him, completely bewildered."Who the hell are you? I haven't set foot in this apartment for the past two weeks. My business trip was extended, and I only landed less than an hour ago. So how did I magically end up here last week?"The hallway went silent as everyone stared at Mike.Mike's face tightened. For the first time, he looked unsure, but he stood his ground.Frank quickly moved to Mike's side, pulling him behind and glaring at Vivian."Ms. Grant, don't tell me you're playing dumb. Mike's an honest

Vivian answered the phone right away."Hey, honey," she chirped. "I'll be home in half an hour. Miss me?""We've got company," I said evenly. "You'd better get home quick."I hung up before she could say anything else.Frank didn't seem bothered at all. If anything, his grin just got wider."Great. Now that Ms. Grant's back, you can finally get divorced, and she can marry Mike. He deserves nothing but the best."I didn't bother responding. Instead, I turned to Jack."Jack, can you bring the organic vegetables from my parents' house into the kitchen?""Right away, sir."Jack picked up the bags and headed inside."Hey!" Frank yelled after him. "You're just the driver. Who said you could go in there? Know your place! Listen up! Everything in this house will be Mike's soon. Don't touch anything unless I say so!"Frank already acted like Mike owned the house, fully expecting Jack to listen to him.Jack ignored him and disappeared into the kitchen.Frank fumed and went after Jac

My expression darkened."Ignore him, Jack," I said. "I'm on my way home."I hung up, wrapped up the meeting with my partner, and drove straight home.Frank was the first person I saw when I entered the house. He was sprawled across my living room couch, holding one of my cigars. My humidor rested open on the coffee table.Beside him sat a younger man with the same features. It was Mike, Frank's son.Mike's tight-collared shirt strained across his broad frame, but that wasn't what caught my eye.It was the watch. My limited-edition Rolex.Frank took a slow drag before looking my way."Lucas, you're finally back. Perfect timing. Clear your stuff out of the master bedroom. Mike's moving in."I stared at him."...Have you lost your mind? This is my house."Frank burst out laughing."For now." He leaned back on the couch. "But once Ms. Grant divorces you and kicks you out, this house will belong to Mike."Frank crossed his legs and looked around the living room as if he owne
