Chapter 3

작가: Bluestone
Half an hour later, Jack and I got to my place.

I was just about to grab some guest slippers when Jack reached into his bag.

He pulled out some blue disposable shoe covers and put them over his shoes, then slipped on a pair of white gloves.

"I brought my own, Mr. Reed. It's more hygienic this way."

I took him into the garage and began explaining the job.

"You'll mainly be driving my wife to and from work, buying groceries, and taking care of household errands."

As I spoke, Jack took out a notebook and carefully wrote everything down.

"Understood, sir. Are there any foods you or your wife can't eat? Any preferences for how you'd like the car maintained?"

"I'm not a fan of cilantro, and my wife has a peanut allergy. Keep the car smoke-free, and don't use any strong fragrances."

He jotted everything down.

"One last question, sir. Is any part of the house off-limits?"

"My wife and I have our rooms upstairs. Don't go up unless I tell you to."

He nodded and closed his notebook.

Over the next hour, Jack threw himself into the work. By the time he was done, the cars were spotless. Even the items in their trunks were neatly arranged.

Watching Jack, it was obvious how different he was from Frank.

Satisfied, I hired him on the spot.

"Come here tomorrow at 2:00 pm."

I gave him my number, then grabbed two bottles of red wine from the cabinet.

I held them out. "You did great today. Take these with you."

Jack immediately took a step back.

"You're too kind, Mr. Reed. But company policy forbids us from accepting anything from our employers."

He gave me a polite nod. "I'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Reed."

I watched him go, more certain than ever that I'd hired the right man.

Afterward, I went to the food stall by the south gate and picked up some seafood pasta to go.

On the way home, I ran into Frank.

He was sitting with the same group of old men from the morning. When he saw the takeout bag in my hand, he smirked.

"What's this? Can't even eat a proper meal without me? I see you're already living on takeout.

"Tell you what. I'll give you a chance."

"Apologize in front of everyone," he said. "Then hand me a cigarette."

"I might reconsider coming back to work if you give me a thousand-dollar raise each month. Otherwise, you'll regret it when Ms. Grant gets home."

I almost laughed.

Frank actually thought I needed him.

Even worse, he behaved like he was the man of the house.

I ignored him and kept walking.

Once Vivian got home, he'd see just how wrong he was.

Just minutes later, sirens wailed through the neighborhood. The cops had arrived.Frank finally lost his composure. He ran toward me, but Jack blocked his path."Lucas, please, I was wrong. I know I was. I'll pay you back for everything I took. Please don't let them take me away."Mike stood there in a daze, completely shell-shocked."I'm not a thief… Viv gave this to me…"Vivian stepped in front of me, her eyes filled with disgust.Frank turned to her desperately."Ms. Grant, you know me. You trusted me enough to hire me. Please help me out. I've always treated you like my daughter. Doesn't that count for something?"Tears rolled down his face as he broke down in sobs.Vivian let out a scoff."Don't flatter yourself, Frank. Without Lucas, you never would've gotten this job. Also, Lucas was the one who approved your salary. Technically speaking, he was your boss."He paid you well above market rate, yet this is how you repay him? By stealing from him and conspiring with y

The laughter lingered long after the video ended. Mocking comments echoed through the hallway."So the whole thing was a big misunderstanding!""Oh my God, Mike actually threw himself at the electrician!""And after all that, he still had the nerve to accuse Ms. Grant? What a shameless bastard!"Mike stood rooted to the spot, his face burning red. He looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole.Beside him, Frank wasn't faring any better. The swagger he had all afternoon was gone.Still, the old man refused to back down. He jabbed a finger at us."Don't think you can fool me," he snapped. "Videos can be edited. This isn't over. Once we get to the bottom of this, we'll be back. My son isn't going to be made a fool of!"He grabbed Mike by the arm and started toward the elevator.Halfway there, Frank smacked Mike across the back."You idiot! I showed you her picture! How could you mistake someone else for her?"Mike clenched his teeth but said nothing.Frank gave hi

The noise had drawn half the building out of their apartments.Frank's usual gossip circle stood at the front, whispering among themselves.Vivian frowned. "Mike? Who on earth is Mike?"Before Frank could reply, Mike stepped forward. He spoke softly, as though they shared some private memory."Viv… don't you remember what happened last week?"You promised you'd divorce Lucas. You said he could never satisfy you, and that you wanted to be with me instead."Vivian stared at him, completely bewildered."Who the hell are you? I haven't set foot in this apartment for the past two weeks. My business trip was extended, and I only landed less than an hour ago. So how did I magically end up here last week?"The hallway went silent as everyone stared at Mike.Mike's face tightened. For the first time, he looked unsure, but he stood his ground.Frank quickly moved to Mike's side, pulling him behind and glaring at Vivian."Ms. Grant, don't tell me you're playing dumb. Mike's an honest

Vivian answered the phone right away."Hey, honey," she chirped. "I'll be home in half an hour. Miss me?""We've got company," I said evenly. "You'd better get home quick."I hung up before she could say anything else.Frank didn't seem bothered at all. If anything, his grin just got wider."Great. Now that Ms. Grant's back, you can finally get divorced, and she can marry Mike. He deserves nothing but the best."I didn't bother responding. Instead, I turned to Jack."Jack, can you bring the organic vegetables from my parents' house into the kitchen?""Right away, sir."Jack picked up the bags and headed inside."Hey!" Frank yelled after him. "You're just the driver. Who said you could go in there? Know your place! Listen up! Everything in this house will be Mike's soon. Don't touch anything unless I say so!"Frank already acted like Mike owned the house, fully expecting Jack to listen to him.Jack ignored him and disappeared into the kitchen.Frank fumed and went after Jac

My expression darkened."Ignore him, Jack," I said. "I'm on my way home."I hung up, wrapped up the meeting with my partner, and drove straight home.Frank was the first person I saw when I entered the house. He was sprawled across my living room couch, holding one of my cigars. My humidor rested open on the coffee table.Beside him sat a younger man with the same features. It was Mike, Frank's son.Mike's tight-collared shirt strained across his broad frame, but that wasn't what caught my eye.It was the watch. My limited-edition Rolex.Frank took a slow drag before looking my way."Lucas, you're finally back. Perfect timing. Clear your stuff out of the master bedroom. Mike's moving in."I stared at him."...Have you lost your mind? This is my house."Frank burst out laughing."For now." He leaned back on the couch. "But once Ms. Grant divorces you and kicks you out, this house will belong to Mike."Frank crossed his legs and looked around the living room as if he owne
