Brooklyn's POV

Neither of us spoke.

He was looking at me and I was looking at him and the hallway was so quiet I could hear the house breathing around us. He took one step closer — just one, slow and deliberate — and my back was already against my door with nowhere further to go.

His eyes dropped briefly to my mouth.

Then footsteps.

Heavy, unhurried, coming from the far end of the corridor.

Patrick.

My hand flew out and I shoved Emerson sideways by the arm — not hard but fast — and spun back th

Brooklyn's POV"Did you see the post?" Sawyer set her tray down across from me and slid into her seat."I saw it.""And?""And nothing." I picked up my fork. "It has nothing to do with me."Sawyer looked at me with the expression she used when she thought I was lying to myself but had decided not to push it. She opened her water bottle instead and we ate in the comfortable quiet we had built between us over the last few weeks. The cafeteria was loud around us. The usual lunchtime noise — trays scraping, chairs dragging, a hundred conversations happening at once. I was halfway through my sandwich when a tray landed on the table directly in front of me.I looked up.Savannah Hayes stood on the other side of the table with her hand still on the tray, red nails perfectly shaped, expression bright and easy the way it always was before she did something that wasn't either of those things."Eat that," she said.I looked at the tray. Creamy pasta, heavily sauced, completely untouched. Then I

I pressed my back against it on the inside and stayed completely still, eyes on the ceiling, not breathing.Outside I heard Patrick's footsteps slow and stop."Emerson." His father's voice was tired but warm, the way it got late at night when the businessman version of him had finally clocked off. "You're back. How did it go? What did the doctor say?"A pause."Fine." Emerson's voice came through the door, slightly muffled. "They checked me

Brooklyn's POVI stayed in the kitchen longer than I needed to.I told myself I was cleaning up. Rinsing the pot, wiping the counter, putting the milk away. Normal things that had nothing to do with the fact that my hand was still warm where his fingers had touched mine and I was very deliberately not thinking about it.When I finally moved into the hallway I could see Daisy's bedroom door from where I stood. Emerson had knocked before going in — one quiet knock, waiting until something moved on the other side before he turned the handle. He left the door slightly open behind him.I should have gone straight to my room.I didn't.I stood near the staircase and listened. Not to words — there weren't many. Mostly just the low sound of his voice, steady and unhurried, the way it was only ever with Daisy. I heard her shift in her bed. I heard him pull the chair close, the small scrape of it against the floor. Then quiet, and the faint sound of him talking to her about something small and

Emerson's POV"Anyway." I leaned back in the chair, steering us away from the subject of Brooklyn entirely. "Did you see that match last night? The one Marquez was talking about?""The City game?" Jordan's face lit up immediately, exactly as I'd hoped. "Bro, that second half was insane. I still don't understand how they let that equalizer through.""Defense fell apart completely.""Completely." He grabbed his controller again, gesturing at the screen. "Speaking of which — you in for a rematch? I've been waiting all week to wipe the floor with you again.""You wish."We played for another twenty minutes, the conversation drifting easily through football, school, nothing that mattered. I felt myself relax for the first time all evening, the tension from the dinner finally draining out of my shoulders. Then Jordan paused the game."Oh, before I forget." He set the controller down. "Your place. Next team party. Two weekends from now."I blinked. "My place?""Yeah, man. We voted on it week

Emerson's POV"It's the turmeric," I said, pressing my hand harder against my stomach for effect. "I'm allergic. Must have been in the soup.""Turmeric?" My father stared at me, genuinely alarmed. "I didn't think there was any turmeric in—""I actually think I tasted something too," Riley cut in quickly, dabbing her mouth with her napkin. "Now that you mention it. A sort of earthy aftertaste."I almost laughed. She had no idea what turmeric tasted like and neither, clearly, did anyone else at that table, because three people nodded along like she had just confirmed a scientific fact."I need to see a doctor," I said, straightening slowly, one hand still braced on the table edge. "Just to be safe. It's happened before. It gets worse if I leave it.""I'll come with you," my father said immediately, already reaching for his jacket."No." I shook my head, coughing once more for good measure. "Stay. Please. The Holloways came all this way." I looked at James Holloway, who was hovering half

Brooklyn's POV"Emerson, you remember Riley." Patrick gestured warmly across the table as the Holloways settled into their seats. "It's been, what, three years since you two last saw each other?""Something like that," Emerson said.He had shown up. I noticed that the second he walked into the dining room at five to seven, dressed properly, hair combed, looking every bit the son his father wanted on display tonight. He hadn't looked at me once since arriving. I told myself that was fine. I told myself it was exactly what I wanted.Riley Holloway was every bit as polished as Patrick had promised. Soft blonde waves, a dress that probably cost more than my mother's rent, and a laugh that arrived precisely on cue whenever Patrick made one of his increasingly unsubtle jokes about the two of them."You two were inseparable as kids," Patrick said, refilling his wine glass. "Riley used to follow you around the old summer house like a shadow.""Dad.""I'm just saying." Patrick raised his hands

Patrick turned from the hallway and looked at me slowly, the way someone does when they're deciding how serious you are."Brooklyn." His voice was calm. "You are contracted through th

Brooklyn's pov "Here is the deal." Emerson leaned against the hallway wall, arms crossed, voice low enough that Daisy couldn't hear from the dining room. He looked completely relaxed, like he negotiated truces every morning before breakfast. "I stay out of your way," he said, "so you're free to
