Chapter 6:

It should have been a happy moment — Jake's promotion at work, drinks with friends at their favorite bar to celebrate two years of hard work finally paying off. Instead, it turned into the worst fight they'd ever had in eight years of friendship.

It started small, the way most bad fights do. A friend of Jake's, a few drinks in, made a joke about him and Mia "finally making it official," gesturing between them with his beer bottle, laughing. And Jake laughed it off too fast, too easily, waving a hand like the idea was ridiculous, impossible, something to brush away without a second thought.

"It's not that big a deal," Jake said later, when Mia brought it up in the back of a cab on the way home, the city lights blurring past the window.

"You looked embarrassed," Mia said, staring straight ahead, arms crossed tight over her chest. "Like the idea of us together for real was something to laugh off in front of your friends."

"That's not what happened."

"That's exactly what happened, Jake! I was standing right there!"

"What do you want me to say?" Jake's voice rose, frustration cracking through his usually calm tone. "That I've been thinking about it for weeks? That every single time someone brings it up, I don't know what to do, because I'm terrified of ruining the best thing in my life over a feeling I can't even fully name yet?" His voice cracked on the last part, raw in a way Mia rarely heard from him.

Mia went completely still, the cab driver glancing at them in the rearview mirror before politely looking away. "What?"

Jake ran a hand through his hair, frustrated at her, at himself, at the whole tangled mess they'd somehow made out of what was supposed to be simple and easy and painless. "I can't lose you as a friend, Mia. Do you understand that? If we try to be something more, if we actually try, and it falls apart the way everything else in my life has fallen apart lately, I don't just lose a girlfriend. I lose you. Completely. My best friend of eight years, gone, because we couldn't leave well enough alone. So yeah, maybe I laughed it off tonight. Because laughing it off is easier than admitting how much I actually want it, and how much it terrifies me."

Mia's eyes stung, tears threatening despite how hard she blinked to hold them back. "You think I'm not scared too? You think I haven't spent every night since this started lying awake, terrified of exactly the same thing?"

"Then why does it always feel like you're the one pumping the brakes? Every time things start feeling real, you're the first one to bring up the rules, to remind us both what this is supposed to be."

"Because someone has to be the responsible one, since apparently that's not you tonight!" The words came out sharper than she meant them, echoing in the small space of the cab.

They sat in silence the rest of the ride, both staring out opposite windows, both saying nothing, both hurting in ways neither of them knew how to fix in that moment. The cab pulled up outside Mia's building, and she got out without a word, without a goodbye, slamming the door harder than necessary.

Jake didn't call that night. Mia didn't call him either. She lay awake for hours, replaying every word, wondering how a celebration had turned into the first real crack in eight years of friendship, wondering if the rules they'd written so carelessly on his couch that first rainy night had finally, inevitably, caught up with them both.

The next day was worse, filled with silence where there used to be good morning texts, empty space where there used to be easy laughter. Mia went to work and stared at her phone all day, willing it to light up. It didn't. By the time she got home that evening, exhausted and heartsick in a way she hadn't expected, she sat on her own couch alone, the apartment feeling far too quiet, and finally admitted to herself what she'd been too scared to say out loud in that cab.

She missed him. Not just as a friend. Not just as whatever careless arrangement they'd made. She missed him the way you miss someone whose absence rearranges the whole shape of your day.

Chapter 10: They didn't rush the final decision, but in the end, it wasn't really a hard one to make. Jake took the job. Mia gave notice at her own position not long after, already halfway in love with the idea of starting something entirely new alongside him, in a city neither of them had ever lived in before, together. The weeks leading up to the move passed in a blur of packing tape and cardboard boxes, of late nights sorting through years of accumulated belongings, deciding what mattered enough to bring along and what could finally be let go. Mia found herself lingering over small things she hadn't expected to feel sentimental about — a chipped coffee mug from her first apartment, a stack of movie ticket stubs she'd kept for no real reason, a photo booth strip from Jake's cousin's engagement party, the two of them laughing in every frame, caught mid-joke in a way neither of them remembered afterward."You're supposed to be throwing things away, not falling in love with your junk

Chapter 9: Just when everything felt steady, settled into a new and comfortable rhythm, an opportunity came for Jake — a job offer in another city, several states away, the kind of promotion he'd worked years toward without ever quite believing it would actually come."I don't know what to do," he told Mia one evening, the offer letter still clutched in his hand, his voice tight with a mix of excitement and dread. "I don't want to leave you, not after everything we've finally figured out. But I don't want you to feel like you have to follow me either, like your whole life has to bend around my career."Mia's heart ached, watching him pace back and forth across her small living room, but she didn't hesitate long before responding. "We started this whole thing by being honest with each other, remember? Rain-soaked confessions on my doorstep and everything. Let's keep doing that now. What do you actually want, Jake? Not what you think you should want. What do you want?"He stopped pacin

Chapter 8: Being real with each other, after months of careful pretending, was terrifying in a whole new and unexpected way."This is different," Mia said one quiet night, tracing slow shapes on Jake's bare chest with one finger, the city lights painting familiar gold stripes across the ceiling above them. "Before, we could pretend it didn't mean anything if it went wrong somehow. We had an exit built right into the rules. Now there's nothing to hide behind if this doesn't work.""Is that a bad thing?" Jake asked, his fingers moving slowly through her hair."No," she said, thinking it over carefully. "It's just... scarier. Good scary, though. The kind of scary that feels worth it."They started doing things real couples did, the kind of things that would have felt impossible to imagine just two months earlier — meeting each other's families properly, not as "just a friend" anymore but as something with a name, something worth introducing. Jake took her to his mother's house for Sunda

Chapter 7:Three days of silence passed before Jake showed up at Mia's apartment, soaked completely through from the rain, no umbrella in sight, like he hadn't planned the trip at all — like he'd simply started walking somewhere, anywhere, and ended up at her door without quite meaning to."I messed up," he said, the second she opened the door, water dripping steadily from his hair down onto his jacket, his shoes squelching against her doormat."Jake, you're soaked—""I don't care. I need to say this before I lose my nerve, and if I stand out here in the hallway any longer I'm going to talk myself out of it." He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, water dripping onto her hardwood floor in dark, spreading spots, and took both her hands in his, cold and damp against her warm ones. "I'm in love with you, Mia. I think I have been for a long time now, maybe longer than I've wanted to admit, even to myself. This was never just benefits for me. Not after the first night. Maybe

Chapter 5: Amber came back into the picture on a Tuesday, completely out of nowhere, the way exes always seem to, as if they have some cosmic radar for the exact moment you've finally started to feel okay again."She wants to get coffee," Jake told Mia over the phone that evening, his voice sounding strange, unsteady in a way she rarely heard from him. "Says she made a mistake. Says she's been thinking about everything."Mia felt her stomach go cold, the phone suddenly heavy in her hand. She was standing in her kitchen, one hand braced against the counter. "What did you say?""I said I'd think about it," Jake admitted. "I don't know why. It just came out.""Oh." The word came out smaller than she meant it to."Mia—""No, it's fine," she said quickly, forcing brightness into her voice that she absolutely did not feel. "It's fine. You guys had something real, once. Two years, right? It makes sense you'd want to hear her out, get some closure, whatever you need.""That's not what I want
