Chapter One –
Happy Birthday I held the small chocolate cake in my hands, trying not to let them shake. I had saved little by little from my salary just to buy it. It wasn’t much, but I told myself it would be enough. After all, it’s not about how big the gift is, but the heart behind it. I had even managed to buy him a shirt last month. It was still hidden inside a small bag near the sofa, wrapped in plain paper. I imagined the smile on his face when he saw it, when he realized I still thought of him, still loved him, despite everything. I wanted tonight to be different. Maybe, just maybe, he would look at me the way he used to. I lit the two candles and waited by the door. When I heard the lock turn, my heart jumped. Quickly, I switched off the lights. The living room went dark, except for the soft glow of the candles. As the door opened and Daniel stepped inside, I walked forward, forcing a smile even though my chest was already tight with nerves. “Happy birthday!” I said, my voice carrying more excitement than I actually felt. I thought he would at least smile. Or maybe be surprised. But instead, Daniel’s brows knitted together. He looked at me, then at the cake, with nothing but irritation. “What is this, Elena?” he asked, his voice flat. I swallowed. “It’s your birthday, Daniel. I wanted to surprise you.” He let out a dry laugh, one that held no joy at all. “A surprise? Do you know what would have really surprised me?” I blinked, confused. “What?” He dropped his bag on the floor and looked straight into my eyes. His next words cut through me like a knife. “If I walked in here and saw a child run into my arms saying ‘Happy birthday, Daddy.’ That would have been a real surprise. That would have made me happy. Not this useless cake. Not you.” The smile on my face froze. My throat burned, but I said nothing. My fingers trembled around the cake, and I was scared I might drop it. Inside, I cried. I wanted to scream, to ask him why he had to say such cruel words, but no sound came out of my mouth. I just stood there, staring at the man who once swore to love me, wondering how love could die so quickly. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Sorry?” He scoffed. “You’ve been saying sorry for years, Elena. Sorry will not give me a child. Sorry will not make me a father.” I felt my knees weaken, but I forced myself to stay still. I would not let him see me fall apart. Not tonight. Before I could reply, my phone rang. I quickly set the cake on the table and reached for it. When I saw the caller ID, my heart almost stopped. It was Mama Grace—my mother-in-law. I hesitated. Every time she called, it was always the same thing—insults about my barrenness, mocking me, telling me I was not worthy to be her son’s wife. Part of me wanted to ignore the call, but I knew that would only make things worse. With shaky hands, I answered. “Good evening, Mama,” I said softly. Her voice came through, and to my surprise, it was calm. “Elena, we are organizing a birthday dinner for Daniel tonight. At Golden Crown Hotel. Eight o’clock. Make sure you are there.” For a second, I couldn’t believe what I had heard. I was expecting her to insult me, to remind me once again that I had failed as a wife. But instead… a dinner invitation? “Yes, Mama,” I said quickly. Relief spread through my chest. Maybe this was a chance. Maybe tonight, things would be different. When the call ended, I pressed the phone to my chest, taking a deep breath. For the first time in weeks, I felt a spark of hope. Turning to Daniel, I smiled carefully. “Daniel, Mama just called. They’re planning a birthday dinner for you tonight at Golden Crown Hotel. Eight o’clock. Isn’t that wonderful?” But Daniel was already pouring himself a drink. He didn’t even look at me. “I’m not interested,” he said flatly. My smile faltered. “What? Daniel, it’s your birthday. Your whole family will be there. Don’t you think—” “I said I’m not going.” His tone was final, sharp like a knife. “I have more important things to do.” I bit my lips so hard I tasted blood. The tears I had been holding back finally rolled down, and I quickly turned away so he wouldn’t see them. “Alright,” I whispered, my voice breaking. I walked into the bedroom and stood in front of the mirror. My eyes were red, my face pale, but I forced myself to wipe the tears away. If he wouldn’t go, then I would. Maybe if I showed up tonight, they would finally see me differently. Maybe they would accept me. I picked up my small purse and straightened my simple dress. My heart was heavy, but I told myself I had to be strong. As I stepped out of the house, one thought kept ringing in my mind: This night might change everything.Chapter 75 — A Dangerous SecretVanessa's POVThe moment I heard Ben's footsteps heading toward Elena's bedroom door, my heart skipped a beat.I quickly moved away from the door and started walking down the hallway, trying to look as normal as possible.I didn't want them to know I had been standing there.Listening.If Ben opened the door and saw me lingering outside, it would be obvious that I had been eavesdropping on their conversation. And that would ruin everything. So I walked a little farther down the hallway just in time. The door opened behind me.I continued walking calmly without turning around, as though I had simply been passing through the corridor. It wasn't until I turned the corner that I finally stopped. The calm expression on my face slowly disappeared.Leaning against the wall, I let out a long breath. My eyes narrowed."So... Elena is pregnant?" I murmured softly. The words felt strange on my tongue.Pregnant.For a moment, I stood there, thinking about everythin
Chapter — A Silent PromiseElena’s POVThe bedroom remained quiet after my call with Eli and Ela.I sat on the bed, loosely holding my phone in one hand. My thoughts were all over the place. Even though hearing my children's voices had made me happy, it had also left my heart feeling heavy.Slowly, I placed my phone beside me and leaned back against the pillows, staring up at the ceiling.Eli and Ela had said they managed to record Daniel.Solid evidence.Their lawyer believed they had a very good chance of winning the case. That news should have completely relieved me.And part of me truly did feel relieved. But another part of me was still worried.Winning a case against someone like Daniel would never be easy.Daniel was manipulative.Dangerous.He knew how to twist situations to his advantage.Slowly, I sat upright and rubbed my forehead.Maybe... what we really needed was a very good lawyer.Someone experienced.Someone who knew how to deal with people like Daniel.Suddenly, an i
Chapter 73 — A Broken HeartElena’s POVI walked quickly toward the bed, my legs trembling under the weight of everything I was feeling. The moment I reached the edge of the bed, I collapsed onto it heavily, as if all the strength in my body had suddenly disappeared.Tears were already streaming down my cheeks.I gripped the bedsheet tightly in my hands as my chest rose and fell painfully. Why…Why is my life always like this?I closed my eyes and let out a silent sob.“Is this really my destiny?” I whispered weakly. My voice trembled.“Can’t I have just one moment of peace?”Everything in my life felt complicated.Everything felt painful.Every time I thought things might finally get better… something happened and destroyed everything.Slowly, I placed my hand on my stomach. My baby. The only thing giving me strength now.But even this innocent little life was already surrounded by problems.“Why does everything have to be so frustrating…” I whispered through my tears. At that momen
Chapter 72 — A Mother’s JudgmentElena’s Point of ViewI was still standing in the middle of the living room when the front door opened again. My heart was already heavy from everything that had just happened. Vanessa was still leaning weakly against the elegant woman, pretending to be injured, while the woman continued staring at me as if I was the worst person she had ever seen.Footsteps entered the house.Strong. Familiar.Ben.The moment he walked into the living room, the woman’s expression changed immediately. The cold anger on her face disappeared, replaced by a bright smile.“Ben!” she called warmly.Ben looked surprised for a second, then his face immediately lit up.“Mom?”He quickly walked toward her. They hugged each other as if they had not seen one another in a long time.I remained standing there silently, watching them, feeling like I did not belong in that room. For a moment, everything between them seemed normal. Then his mother slowly pulled away from the embrace.
Chapter 71 — A Perfect TrapElena’s Point of ViewThe kitchen was silent. For the first time since I had returned to this house, everything felt calm. There were no harsh words, no cold stares, and no heavy tension hanging in the air like a storm waiting to break.Just silence.I stood in front of the stove, slowly stirring the soup in the pot. The gentle sound of it simmering filled the kitchen, while the warm scent of the food spread throughout the room.Cooking had always helped me think. My mind had been heavy since yesterday. Too much had happened. Vanessa. The baby. Ben. The secrets we were keeping. My hand gently rested on my stomach for a moment without me even realizing it.A small life was growing inside me.It still felt strange.I took a slow breath and focused my attention back on the pot.Maybe if I kept myself busy, my thoughts would eventually calm down. That was when I heard footsteps.Slow.Light.But very familiar. My body immediately stiffened.Vanessa.She walked
Chapter 70 — Just UsElena’s Point of View“Elena… come with me.”Ben’s voice was calm, but there was something deeper behind it, something serious that made me look up at him immediately. For a moment, I hesitated. The tension from my conversation with Vanessa still lingered heavily in the room, and her words continued replaying in my mind. But Ben was already standing, waiting for me.So I slowly stood up.Without saying another word, he turned around and started walking toward the hallway.I followed him.The house felt quiet now. Too quiet. The sound of our footsteps was the only thing breaking the silence surrounding us.I wondered where Vanessa had gone. Whether she was watching us, listening, or waiting for something. But Ben did not stop until we reached the bedroom. He opened the door and stepped aside.“Come in,” he said softly.I walked inside. The room felt peaceful and warm compared to the tension that had filled the living room. The soft glow from the lamp made the spac
