LOGINIt was the Morning of my first day of school. I was excited, it was the first time I have ever been to school. I was going in my sophomore year. I was in a way being held back even though my age should have put me in my junior year, but that was okay by me. More time in a way to experience normal teen things. The things I have been experiencing have been really cool. Some are better than the movies or TV shows. Others were way more annoying than I thought and was hopping, but hey, that is life, I guess. I tossed on my dark denim jeans combat boots and a white t-shirt. went into the kitchen and warmed myself up a couple of waffles. This is the one thing Normal teens have that in my situation will not ever have. I do not have anyone living with me, no parents, no family, no guardians, nothing. Just me myself and I. It was nice for the most part but coming home from a long day and not having anyone, no one to vent to, no one to let the steam off with. I think since faked my death and been alone, I have been feeling really pent up. Especially since I have not been able to train. So, I do not know what to do with myself anymore. I thought the diner would help me blow off steam but, in a way, it has, and in another, it has made it worse. I will probably have to join a sport or something so I can get some of this out. I headed out. Ready to start my day. It was my first day of school. Something I have daydreamed about for a long time, and it was finally here. The little shabby apartment I was placed in by the organization that helped me run also got me the papers I needed to start school without any of the staff raising questions. I have to be under the radar and blend in. The walk to the school is not that far, maybe like thirty minutes forty-five at most. I get there and parents are hugging kids goodbye and taking first-day pictures with family and friends. It is hard not to stare at them and feel the tiniest bit of jealousy.
“Well, hello there little mouse. See anything you like.” Ezra drawled behind. It was hard not to stand there and not roll my eyes at him. “What do you want?” I asked all annoyed. “Nothing... just feeling a bit curious.” He replied not bothered by my tone. “Go bother someone else” I spat and walked off. Stuck up jerk. What was with him calling me little mouse? If he thinks I am someone who is prey for him to play with. He is wrong. No one at this school would prey on me. If they tried. They would soon learn their lesson, but I will have to be careful how I do it. Needing to stay under the radar and all that. I walk into the front office to drop off the rest of the paperwork they needed me to finish before they could give me my class. “Here is my paperwork,” I said to the lady in the front office. “Have a seat I will give you your class schedule in a minute.” She motioned for me to go sit down. As I was sitting and waiting a cute-looking girl sat next to me. “Hello! You must be new! I’m Cindy!” She replied. “Is it That obvious?” I asked with a smile on my face “I know pretty much everyone here it is not often we get new people if we do, they are only seasonal, and they are gone by the time school rolls around,” Cindy said. “Really? The dinner seemed to be busier right before school started” I asked surprised “Oh, that is the townie dinner visitors go to the one on the edge of town by the water” Cindy smiled at me. I wondered if we would become friends. My first real friend ever. “Elizabeth Hawks here’s your schedule.” the receptionist said as she handed me my paper. I stood there looking it over, all the classes seemed typical, nothing strange. The homeroom with Mr. Griffen first period was world literature. Second period I had Biology. the third period was lunch. Fourth-period World history, the fifth period was algebra two. The sixth period was my free period. seventh period and last period was LOTLAS? what the hell was that? Cindy looked over my shoulder and gasped. "Wow, you are in a lot of the advance classes for only being a sophomore you must be super smart." "I guess" I shrugged my shoulders. "But can you tell me what the last one is?" "Wow you must be athletic too if you are trying out for "Living off the land and surviving in your sophomore year lots of people wait till they are juniors to even attempt that class," she said. "Eh... a little bit." I shrugged my shoulders again, trying to downplay everything, I was hoping I was going to be able to blend in but with how she was telling me how my schedule was I doubt it. I knew I was smart from all the tutors my parents hired to teach me, only the best for the best superheroes and their children. So, I already learned everything in those classes. "Well looks like we have homeroom together, lunch, and free period. Do you want to sit together?" she asked sounding a little timid. I wondered why she did not sit with her friends or something and was asking me about the new kid, but the pleading look in her eye told me she really wanted me to sit with her for whatever reason, I was in no shape to deny a friendship. "Sure! I would love to! I would love to have someone that knows the building help me from getting lost." I beamed at her. "Great! we can get going, I just had to drop this letter off anyways," she said and then we were out the door heading to homeroom. With the final buzzer, we split up. I climbed up high. My strength was in quick, sneaky attacks. I could do close up combat, but I tire out quickly. Mr. Griffin gave us radios in case of an emergency. I stayed close to the school. Watching and waiting for the mutants to arrive. I was rusty, so I was fine with dealing with stragglers. I wasn’t sure what caused a group of them to gather and randomly attack. Even with all the studies my parents paid for to better understand them. They came up with nothing. They even tried coming up with a cure. But no luck with that either. Sometimes it felt like they appeared out of nowhere. That’s how random the attacks can be. That is why they created buzzer systems like the one at the school. To give people a chance to run and hide. There were many bunkers built throughout the city for this reason. Biters couldn’t break through much. They are only dangerous to people if they break the skin and fluids from their bodies are exchanged with the open wou
Mutants have a distinctive scent. It goes along with their overall wrongness. They smelled like rotten earth and industrial buildings. Depending on the type of mutant, all they had to do was be near you, and you could become infected. Only superheroes can defend from those because they have some of the mutant genes in them, so they don’t turn. If you don’t have the mutant genes in you already, you’re at risk of turning into a mutant. Those mutants are rare. It’s more common to face the ones that if they bite you or break your skin, you become infected. But it was always better to be safe, then dead.I turned to Cindy, asking if there was a safe place for students to lay low while mutants attacked. I had to get her to safety. Fear clouded her eyes, and they darted all around; her body shook in fear. She was in shock. I slapped her across her face.“CINDY!” I yelled her name. Grabbing her by the shoulders, shaking her. She snapped out of it. “Cafeteria,” she said. I grabbed her by the
My head cleared from the fog of pain. Ezra had me on his lap. Head on his chest. He was rubbing gentle circles on my back. I wanted to nestle myself deeper into his embrace. The smell of him was subtle but calming. It reminded me of the forest and coffee shops. Deep. I could easily lose myself in his embrace. At that thought, I instantly jumped up and pushed myself away.“Whoa, little mouse, all is okay.” Ezra calmly stated, hands up.“I… uh…” I wanted to say something, but I didn’t know what. Ezra stood up, making his way to the door.“I will give you some space, you blacked out from the pain, I assume, from the way you screamed and didn’t answer my knocks, I’ll be out here, come out after you relax.” He didn’t seem upset; he just walked away to give me my space. I took a few deep breaths, centering myself again, and walked out of the room. Ezra was in the living room, talking on the phone. He turned when he heard my approach. “Okay, we will be heading back now? Okay. Bye.” Ezra sai
I remind him of someone he lost? Sarah? Was that who he lost? I had so many questions about that, but I held my tongue. Now wasn’t the time. The nurse was busy, so I decided to go to the bathroom and check out the damage myself. Cindy came into the bathroom and gave me a look like she wanted to talk, so I let her in. Ezra sat in one chair near the bathroom looking like he would rather be anywhere else. I helped myself to an ice pack and some bandages. Like I told Mr. Griffen, this wasn't my first black eye, probably not even close to the worse one I had. I think the worse one I had, I made a mistake and got beaten up by the gang my parents ordered me to follow. I ended up losing consciousness, and they were gone by the time I came to. When I went home I told my mom and dad how I failed the mission and couldn’t find those people. They made sure to punch me in all the places I had marks from them to really drive home the point of my failure. I made sure I never made a mistake like that
Cindy looked worried as I looked over to Mr. Griffen. I was at school, so nothing bad could happen while I was here. Right? I nod to Cindy to leave without me. I walk over to Mr. Griffin. I know I shouldn’t be nervous, but something about him sets me on edge. He was watching everyone leave the room intently. I took a moment to look him over. A thought entered my mind as I was looking at his very familiar features. Not only did he look like me, but he could be Sarah’s older brother. If I say anything, he will wonder how I know about her, and then I’ll have to explain how I found her picture in a random book, some crazy book witch lady told me to find. Yeah, I am not doing that.“So, Miss Hawks, you are emancipated, correct?” Mr. Griffen asked as soon as the last student left the room. Looking at me so intensely, I wonder if he could see my green eyes through my brown colored contacts.“Yeah? It was in my paperwork when I started.” I answered, confused why he was asking. “I read your p
Fuck. Ezra had me pinned against the wall. His body on top of mine in a lover's embrace. Shit, what did he say? Green eyes. I didn’t put in my brown contacts. Damn it. Hopefully, I did a good enough job hiding the rest of my face with the scarf. I just had to break from his hold. And get back to the apartment without him noticing. I pushed the heel of my foot on his. He staggers back a step. Just enough for me to bed down and elbow him. He backed up even more with a grunt. It was just enough for me to break free and run down the alley. I couldn’t go up the fire escape yet. So I ran down past a couple of buildings and jumped into a neighbor's yard. I quickly climbed their tree. After a few moments, my breaths evened out. I could hear foot’s stop appro
If that first class was any indication of how the rest of the school year will be. I will be right in my assumption of already knowing all of what they will teach and then some. I was already bored before biology even started. I found myself spacing out the window, wondering what I would be doing i

We walked into homeroom together. Cindy was talking about classes and how some of the teachers are, but I felt her voice fade away as my eyes were drawn towards the back of the room to the cocky guy in the back with his legs up and lounging back, our eyes meet and gave me a small wink, I made sure
“Two classic burgers with fries!” I yell over the clanks of plates and the chatter of customers. I dance around from one table to another serving food and taking orders. For some people, this dinner rush was crazy and chaotic. However, I loved it. I love challenges and thrive under pressure. Grante
