We walked into homeroom together. Cindy was talking about classes and how some of the teachers are, but I felt her voice fade away as my eyes were drawn towards the back of the room to the cocky guy in the back with his legs up and lounging back, our eyes meet and gave me a small wink, I made sure to eye roll extra hard at him. I do not know what it was about him, but that smug face made me want to punch him. Cindy must have noticed who had my attention as we sat next to each other in the front row.

"I know he seems like a jerk, but he is actually a good guy to the people he cares about," Cindy whispered.

"Well, I am not one of those people I guess because is a pompous jerk," I replied.

A hand full of more students file into the room. About five minutes later the bell rang. The door opened to a tall fit man who was clearly the teacher. His green eyes swept over us but seemed to stop on me for a moment. Before continuing the sweep of the room.

“All rightt hope everyone is here, or else it is detention after school. For those who are new or have not met me yet in LOTLAS, I am Mr. Griffen, and I do not tolerate being late. That is all.” He grounded out.

He began roll call and he had a no-nonsense attitude about him. He got to my name.

      “Here,” I said.

He paused for a moment looking at me funny. Weird, he moved on with the rest of the list without pausing on anyone else.

“All right now that everyone is here if you have not got their schedule go pick it up at the front office then head to your first period,” he said. Some people began shuffling their things getting ready for the first period, a couple of kids left to get schedules and Mr. Griffen wrote something down in his notebook. We still had a couple of minutes before the bell rang to release us. I continue to listen to Cindy talk about anything and everything she thought of. This girl could seriously talk, she did not seem to mind the fact I’m not very social and just kept talking before yelling out.

“Oh, why don't I get your number so we can text and maybe hang out after school or something sometime.” She said with such a smile I felt bad, but I had to tell her the truth.

“I do not have a phone or any type of social media,” I said feeling a little embarrassed. I knew that was very strange.

“Really? If you do not mind me asking... is it because of your parents?” She asked trying to hide her shock.

“Yeah... You could do that... They used to care but it does not matter so much anymore... I have never had use for one, so I never got around to getting one.” I said trying to hide my shame.

“Probably because little miss waitress is too poor for one and too poor for real friends, so she has settled for you” Luke laughed as he smacked my books and things off my desks.

“At least I have an original personality and I just did not Copy and paste from classic Jock Douce bag from the dictionary,” I yelled back at him.

“Luke, you have detention on the first day of school. Congratulations.” Mr. Griffen called out.

“What the actual hell Mr. Griffen” Luke yelled back in complete shock. Even some of the other students were mumbling in frustration that he actually put a student in the dentition. It is probably because Luke is built and so is Mr. Griffen. So, he’s probably one of those teachers that looks the other way when it comes to jocks, but I guess not today? I wonder why. Mr. Griffen looked over my way and locked eyes again with me, but no emotion I could read showed on his face, except he was looking at me like he was looking for something. What he could be looking for I had no idea. He almost looked like a male version of me before I changed my looks and went into hiding.

“I do not tolerate unnecessary bullying Luke, so you better grow up.” Mr. Griffen said.

“What a grade-A jerk right Cindy? Guess Mr. Griffen seems decent.” I muttered, but when my gaze met with hers, something did not sit right with me.             "Cindy are you alright?" I asked. Cindy looked at me with wild fear in her eyes. I was worried for this girl, what was her deal? was it something I said? probably. I did not the first thing about friends and being a teen. I probably mess this whole thing up somehow.

"Cindy I am sorry if I did or said something that offended you. I am not great with making friends." I admitted. she was looking down at her hands that were balled into fists. her blonde hair covered her face so I could not try and read what was on her face.

"There is something you do not know about me..." she got out weakly.

"So? we just meet, there are things about me you do not know about, but that does not mean anything," I said, assuming whatever she was not saying was important, I did not what her to think I would expect her to tell me right away or at all if he did not want to tell me. There are things about me I could never share with her, for her safety and mine.

“I know... but this is huge, and I want to be the one who tells you before someone else does in this school...” she stumbled her words and began to shake.

"Okay..." I was confused trying to think of what could be so scary that she had to tell me before someone else did.

"Whatever you have to tell me it is okay. tell me when you are ready. I will not judge you" I said trying to give her a bit of confidence so she could tell me.

"Okay... here goes..." she said but then...

           DING DONG

The bell rang and everyone got to their feet and walked out the door, Including Mr. Griffen. I sat there waiting for her to tell me as she stood up. I wonder if she was going to say it or just leave and go to class.

"Elizabeth... I am trans," she whispered it like she did not want a single person to hear, even though we were the only people in the room. "Okay? that is it?" I asked wondering why that was such a big deal.

"Wait... what? you're not going to freak out and call me gross and a freak?" she asked shocked about how calm I was. she was who she was. Whether she was born male or female, should not matter especially if it is not hurting anyone.

"No, why would I do that? you are you. what else matters?" I said calmly. she began to cry and hug me.

"THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! OH MY GOD, WE HAVE TO GET TO FIRST PERIOD!!" she ran out the door tugging on my arm to follow.

  • Run Fox Run   What the Mutants came For

With the final buzzer, we split up. I climbed up high. My strength was in quick, sneaky attacks. I could do close up combat, but I tire out quickly. Mr. Griffin gave us radios in case of an emergency. I stayed close to the school. Watching and waiting for the mutants to arrive. I was rusty, so I was fine with dealing with stragglers. I wasn’t sure what caused a group of them to gather and randomly attack. Even with all the studies my parents paid for to better understand them. They came up with nothing. They even tried coming up with a cure. But no luck with that either. Sometimes it felt like they appeared out of nowhere. That’s how random the attacks can be. That is why they created buzzer systems like the one at the school. To give people a chance to run and hide. There were many bunkers built throughout the city for this reason. Biters couldn’t break through much. They are only dangerous to people if they break the skin and fluids from their bodies are exchanged with the open wou

  • Run Fox Run   This is What I was Trained for

Mutants have a distinctive scent. It goes along with their overall wrongness. They smelled like rotten earth and industrial buildings. Depending on the type of mutant, all they had to do was be near you, and you could become infected. Only superheroes can defend from those because they have some of the mutant genes in them, so they don’t turn. If you don’t have the mutant genes in you already, you’re at risk of turning into a mutant. Those mutants are rare. It’s more common to face the ones that if they bite you or break your skin, you become infected. But it was always better to be safe, then dead.I turned to Cindy, asking if there was a safe place for students to lay low while mutants attacked. I had to get her to safety. Fear clouded her eyes, and they darted all around; her body shook in fear. She was in shock. I slapped her across her face.“CINDY!” I yelled her name. Grabbing her by the shoulders, shaking her. She snapped out of it. “Cafeteria,” she said. I grabbed her by the

  • Run Fox Run   Little Mouse, Don't Run

My head cleared from the fog of pain. Ezra had me on his lap. Head on his chest. He was rubbing gentle circles on my back. I wanted to nestle myself deeper into his embrace. The smell of him was subtle but calming. It reminded me of the forest and coffee shops. Deep. I could easily lose myself in his embrace. At that thought, I instantly jumped up and pushed myself away.“Whoa, little mouse, all is okay.” Ezra calmly stated, hands up.“I… uh…” I wanted to say something, but I didn’t know what. Ezra stood up, making his way to the door.“I will give you some space, you blacked out from the pain, I assume, from the way you screamed and didn’t answer my knocks, I’ll be out here, come out after you relax.” He didn’t seem upset; he just walked away to give me my space. I took a few deep breaths, centering myself again, and walked out of the room. Ezra was in the living room, talking on the phone. He turned when he heard my approach. “Okay, we will be heading back now? Okay. Bye.” Ezra sai

  • Run Fox Run   Heat in the Hall Way

I remind him of someone he lost? Sarah? Was that who he lost? I had so many questions about that, but I held my tongue. Now wasn’t the time. The nurse was busy, so I decided to go to the bathroom and check out the damage myself. Cindy came into the bathroom and gave me a look like she wanted to talk, so I let her in. Ezra sat in one chair near the bathroom looking like he would rather be anywhere else. I helped myself to an ice pack and some bandages. Like I told Mr. Griffen, this wasn't my first black eye, probably not even close to the worse one I had. I think the worse one I had, I made a mistake and got beaten up by the gang my parents ordered me to follow. I ended up losing consciousness, and they were gone by the time I came to. When I went home I told my mom and dad how I failed the mission and couldn’t find those people. They made sure to punch me in all the places I had marks from them to really drive home the point of my failure. I made sure I never made a mistake like that

  • Run Fox Run   Paperwork and Bloodlines

Cindy looked worried as I looked over to Mr. Griffen. I was at school, so nothing bad could happen while I was here. Right? I nod to Cindy to leave without me. I walk over to Mr. Griffin. I know I shouldn’t be nervous, but something about him sets me on edge. He was watching everyone leave the room intently. I took a moment to look him over. A thought entered my mind as I was looking at his very familiar features. Not only did he look like me, but he could be Sarah’s older brother. If I say anything, he will wonder how I know about her, and then I’ll have to explain how I found her picture in a random book, some crazy book witch lady told me to find. Yeah, I am not doing that.“So, Miss Hawks, you are emancipated, correct?” Mr. Griffen asked as soon as the last student left the room. Looking at me so intensely, I wonder if he could see my green eyes through my brown colored contacts.“Yeah? It was in my paperwork when I started.” I answered, confused why he was asking. “I read your p

  • Run Fox Run   Fox In the Branches

Fuck. Ezra had me pinned against the wall. His body on top of mine in a lover's embrace. Shit, what did he say? Green eyes. I didn’t put in my brown contacts. Damn it. Hopefully, I did a good enough job hiding the rest of my face with the scarf. I just had to break from his hold. And get back to the apartment without him noticing. I pushed the heel of my foot on his. He staggers back a step. Just enough for me to bed down and elbow him. He backed up even more with a grunt. It was just enough for me to break free and run down the alley. I couldn’t go up the fire escape yet. So I ran down past a couple of buildings and jumped into a neighbor's yard. I quickly climbed ‌their tree. After a few moments, my breaths evened out. I could hear foot’s stop appro

  • Run Fox Run   Playing at being normal

“Two classic burgers with fries!” I yell over the clanks of plates and the chatter of customers. I dance around from one table to another serving food and taking orders. For some people, this dinner rush was crazy and chaotic. However, I loved it. I love challenges and thrive under pressure. Grante

  • Run Fox Run   A Locker Of Firsts

It was the Morning of my first day of school. I was excited, it was the first time I have ever been to school. I was going in my sophomore year. I was in a way being held back even though my age should have put me in my junior year, but that was okay by me. More time in a way to experience normal
