Elias walks straight toward the car with his shoulders squared. David Reid and Marcus stand waiting for him. He stops a few feet away and nods at both of them.

“Mr. Reid,” he says, stopping a few feet short of the car. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“No,” David says. “I imagine not.”

David stares at him for a long moment without speaking. The silence stretches until he finally says, “It’s high time we talked properly.”

Marcus is standing on the other side of the car, and he opens the rear door

  • SIR   #82: What The...

The doctor’s words have been looping in Elias’s head for six days straight, the same sentence arriving on repeat whenever the flat goes quiet enough to let it in.You’re very fortunate you got there on time to save her life.He is sitting in the chair beside his mother’s bed, watching her chest rise and fall in the thin grey light coming through the curtains, and thinking about how strange it is that a sentence meant to comfort him has instead become the thing keeping him up at night. Fortunate. As if there was some other version of that afternoon where he came home twenty minutes later and found something he could not have fixed with a phone call and a set of steady hands. He looks at her now, propped against the pillows, her skin still carrying that faint grey undertone the hospital never quite managed to talk him out of worrying about, and he tries to remember what she looked like before all of this. Before the drinking, before the coughing that never fully goes away, before the v

  • SIR   #81: Dead Man

Hi guys!Ok so before I proceed, permit me to shamelessly advertise my new book – His Undercover Submissive. It's a steamy BDSM romance where our female lead is an FBI agent who has to go undercover to save her best friend from an underground sex ring and needs to be trained as the perfect submissive. She steps into The Red Room and her trainer is none other than Ryder, the man who broke her heart 12 years ago. Go experience their push-pull romance and be sure to let me know what you think!~I am still holding my hand over my nose when I turn around, and the person standing there holding a dead rat by its tail like it is a completely normal Tuesday accessory is, against every possible law of the universe, Garvin.“What the fuck,” I say, because that is genuinely the only sentence available to me right now, “are you doing here?”“Good to see you too.”“I asked you a question.”“You did,” he agrees, entirely unbothered, holding the rat slightly further from his body as if he has o

  • SIR   #80: Tell Me Everything

Breakfast is the best it has been in weeks.I know this because Tyler is arguing with Lucas about something that happened in a video game and my mother is laughing at both of them and my father is reading the paper with the fake seriousness of a man pretending not to find the argument funny. The kitchen smells like the good coffee and the eggs that the cook does with the herbs from the garden, and for the first time in twenty-two days the morning feels like a morning rather than a holding pattern.I watch Tyler steal the last piece of toast from Lucas’s plate and Lucas’s subsequent outrage and I feel something warm and entirely uncomplicated settle in my chest.Selene is at the end of the table with her coffee, looking at everyone and interacting whenever she can. After the laughter dies down, she clears her throat.“We’ve decided to stay,” she says, looking at my father. “We’ll cancel the trip, or at least postpone it. Nora and the kids need people around right now. Marcus and I talk

  • SIR   #79: I've Got You

The cafeteria at Fairfield is louder than Westbridge’s was, which Elias had not anticipated, and the noise is doing nothing useful for the particular quality of silence he is trying to maintain inside his own head.He has been sitting at the corner table for twenty minutes. His lunch is in front of him, untouched, and he has been moving it around the tray with a fork for fifteen of those minutes.Carver is alive. He turns the sentence over again. He has been turning it over since David’s car dropped him back on Crane Street last night, since he walked up to the flat and made himself eat something and lay on his bed staring at the ceiling until the ceiling offered nothing further. He has run it through from every angle he can access and he keeps arriving at the same wall, which is that he was there, he fired the shot, and he watched the man go down.Did he… somehow survive? No, that’s impossible. He shot him point blank in the head. But then again, he was dizzy and bleeding out wh

  • SIR   #78: Done Playing Nice

A/N: Double update today cause I love you guys and you asked nicely :)~I am sitting at the edge of the pool with my legs in the water and my sketchbook open on my lap and my headphones in and for about forty minutes I have successfully avoided thinking about anything that requires my actual attention. Then a shadow falls across the page.I pull one headphone out and look up. Zeke is standing behind me with his hands in his pockets. “You’re not at your desk.”“Extremely observant,” I say. “Have you considered a career in security?”“Your class started twenty minutes ago.”“My class,” I say, closing the sketchbook, “can start without me. It is a screen with a teacher on it. The teacher does not know whether I am there or not. The screen is the same regardless.”Zeke looks at me for a moment with the particular patience of someone who has decided not to have an argument about this right now. Then he takes off his shoes and sits down beside me at the pool edge, rolling his trouser

Elias looks at it and then at David, and understands clearly that this is not a request, and gets in.David settles in beside him. Marcus gets behind the wheel, and the car begins to move.Nobody speaks for the first several minutes. The lower east side goes past the windows, the streets Elias knows, and then streets he knows less well, and then roads he does not recognize at all as they move further from the neighborhood and into open space on the eastern edge of the city. E

  • SIR   Epilogue

The bedroom door is barely closed before David's hands are on me, sliding up under the thin silk of my robe as he backs me against the wall.I tilt my head back against the cool plaster, letting him kiss down the column of my throat while my fingers work the buttons of his shirt open. His skin is s

  • SIR   #52: Hands Where I Can See Them

The sight of Maya on our couch with her legs crossed, looking like she’s waiting for room service, snaps something inside me and I just move. I cross the living room in three strides, my hands already curling into fists, ready to wipe that calm smile off her face with every ounce of rage that’s b

  • SIR   #54: I'm Fucking Sorry

Maya stands frozen under the bright lights of the Red Room, her chest rising and falling too fast, eyes wide with the kind of shock that only comes when every careful plan collapses in the same heartbeat. Blood is drying on my arms, sticky and warm, but none of it is mine. The bodies of her men lie

  • SIR   #55: You Know I'm Right

Maya jerks backward from the impact, the bullet tearing through the meat of her shoulder. She staggers two steps with her right hand clamping over the wound and blood already seeping between her fingers. The knife she’d pulled from her boot clatters to the floor. Her eyes are wide and locked on the
