When they pulled over for fuel and snacks, the reality of Dee's planning set in; they wouldn't be eating any real food until they reached the hotel. "You know we can't mess with Mom's schedule," Kyle remarked as he climbed back into the U-Haul, tossing a bag of chips to his sister.

Gemma held the bag up, staring at it completely unimpressed. "Seriously? No barbecue flavor?"

"Barbecue for breakfast?" Kyle replied. "Aren't you afraid of getting heartburn? Or at the least bad breath?"

"This is coming from the guy who pairs chili with beer at ten in the morning?" Gemma shot back with a laugh. "And you're lecturing me about heartburn?"

"That was a one-time thing," Kyle chuckled, joining in her laughter. "I certainly learned my lesson, and I think the bathroom is still in recovery."

Their laughter faded quickly, leaving the nervous knot in Gemma’s stomach exactly where it had been. By the time they finally pulled into the hotel parking lot that evening, it was almost nine o'clock. As Don and Dee headed to a nearby drive-thru for dinner,

Kyle and Gemma waited outside for them to return.Gemma leaned back against the U-Haul and took a pull from her vape. "Why is everyone so convinced I need this? I'd be perfectly happy staying home and going to a local college."

"It's not that everyone thinks you need it; it's that you worked so hard to earn it," Kyle reminded her. "You've been telling stories since you learned you could talk. Don't you want a real shot at making something of that talent? Look, Gemmy Bear, you deserve this opportunity—it's not just some chore you have to do."

The family settled into the cramped hotel room to eat once their parents arrived with dinner, trying to talk like they always did. "So, Gemma, what's at the top of your to-do list once you're all moved in?" her father asked.

Gemma continued to pick at her food and wouldn't look him in the eye. "I'm not sure, Dad. Is sleeping until the first break an option?"

"That strategy served me well in high school, but I doubt the college professors will be as forgiving," Kyle joked, attempting to soothe her nerves but only managing to miss the mark.

Gemma stood as she threw away her trash. After pulling off her sweatshirt and changing into pajamas, she sighed, "I'm heading to bed. I might as well enjoy one final night of decent sleep before we get there."

"So, what's the sleeping arrangement?" Kyle asked as he slapped his hands together.

"I'm definitely not sharing with you," Gemma informed her brother bluntly. She hopped into bed next to her mother and added, "You can enjoy a front-row seat to Dad's snoring."

"That's fine," Kyle shot back. "You'll be the one dealing with Mom's restless legs and Dad's snoring." Kyle climbed into the bed beside his father. It was a hilarious sight, watching the two brawny bikers attempting to squeeze into a single double bed.

Don looked over at his wife with a grin on his face and asked, "Can you feel the love in this room?"

Kyle lay back and pulled up the blankets and then threw them back off in a hurry. "Oh my god, Dad, did you have to? You know there's a bathroom right there, right?" Kyle cried out.

Gemma reached over to hug her mother, trying not to laugh as she leaned against her back. "Well, Mom, you're going to be stuck dealing with the two of them all on your own for the next four years."

Dee laughed, giving her a playful nudge toward her side of the bed. "Oh, hush up and get some sleep, all of you."

While her family slept, Gemma tossed and turned until she finally admitted defeat. Slipping out of bed, she pulled Tony's sweatshirt over her head, grabbed her phone and vape, and eased open the sliding glass door to the balcony.

She stepped outside, pulling the door nearly shut trying not to wake anyone. While scrolling through her phone, she took a photo and sent it to Tony with a message: "First night away and I already want to come home."

Even though it was almost three in the morning, Tony responded to her text immediately, almost as if he had been expecting her message. He texted back: “You’re just scared right now. That doesn’t mean you’re making the wrong choice.”

She was getting ready to text him back when her brother stepped out onto the balcony. Leaning against the wall, he snatched the vape from her hand and took a hit. Coughing he handed it back to her. "How can you smoke that thing?" he asked.

"How can you smoke cigarettes when you're angry?" she countered.

“Cigarettes don’t taste like fruit,” he said. But then he looked at her seriously. "And does that mean you're angry about something?"

"No, not really," she admitted with a shrug. "Just already missing home."

Kyle gestured toward her phone with a knowing nod, having spotted the contact icon she used for Tony’s number. "So," he began, "what’s the actual story with you and Tony?"

"I don't know what you're talking about," she shot back defensively. "There is no 'me and Tony' story to tell."

"That's bullshit, Gemma, you and I both know it, " Kyle said. "I've seen the way he looks at you. He's always checking with me to see if you're coming into work so I can give you a ride home. The guy is looking for you every damn day." Gemma looked away, shifting her attention back down to her screen."And I've seen how you behave when he's around, too," Kyle added, his voice softening. "Don't try to tell me I'm making things up."

“You should get some sleep. Mom’s going to have everybody moving by eight sharp.” Kyle put his hand on her shoulder. “You and Tony mean the world to me. I just want you to be happy, but I also don’t want to end up having to choose between my best friend and my favorite sister.”

"I'm the only sister you have, Kyle," she pointed out.

He flashed a grin at her. "That doesn't change the fact that you're still my favorite, Gemmy Bear." Leaving Gemma by herself on the balcony, Kyle headed back inside the room. She took another pull from her vape before picking up her phone to message Tony: I think I’m going to go back to bed. Good night, Tony.

Good night, Shortcake, he replied back. Gemma quietly made her way back into the room, where she lay back down beside her mom and eventually fell asleep.

Chase was standing just inches from her, his shadow falling completely over her, when the sudden, sharp rattle of a key in the deadbolt broke the silence.Instantly, Chase stepped back. The cold, predatory look vanished from his face, replaced in a split second by the polished, phony smile he used to charm everyone else on campus. The door swung open, and Freddy bustled in, wrestling an overstuffed duffel bag and a travel mug through the frame. She looked up, brushing a strand of hair out of her face, but her bright smile faltered the second she took in the room. The suffocating, heavy tension in the air was so thick it practically choked her.Freddy’s eyes darted between the two of them. She looked at Gemma, who was visibly rattled—pale, backed against the dresser, and trembling slightly—and then over to Chase, who stood entirely relaxed, playing the part of the picture-perfect, all-American male flawlessly.Freddy dropped her bag heavily onto the floor, her protective instincts imme

The rest of the drive passed in a suffocating silence. Gemma kept her eyes glued to the passenger window, watching the dark Colorado landscape blur past, hyper-aware of the locked doors and the steady rhythm of Chase’s breathing beside her. When he finally pulled into the parking lot of her dorm, Gemma reached for the handle before the car was even fully in park. "I can take my bag from here. Thank you for the ride.""Don't be ridiculous," Chase said, his voice smooth as he cut the engine. "I'm not letting you lug that all the way up to the third floor by yourself."He was out of the car and popping the trunk before she could argue.Gemma followed him into the building, her stomach tying itself into tighter and tighter knots with every step they took up the stairwell. He walked just a little too close behind her, his presence a heavy, looming weight. When they reached her door, she fumbled with her keys. Her hands were shaking so badly it took three tries to get the deadbolt to turn.

The air inside Denver International was chaotic and loud, but Gemma felt a strange sense of calm as she walked through the terminal. She had ignored three new texts from Chase since landing, but she didn't hesitate to pull up her contacts and hit Tony’s name.He answered on the first ring.“Wheels down?” Tony’s voice came through the speaker, instantly making the crowded, stressful airport fade away.“Safe and sound,” Gemma said, shifting her bag higher on her shoulder. “Though it is freezing here.”“Told you to steal another hoodie,” he teased softly. A beat of quiet affection passed between them over the line. “You got that Uber lined up yet?”“Getting ready to order it right now,” she promised, nearing the exit. “I'm just walking out to the pickup zone.”“Good. Text me when you get in the car, and text me the second you lock your dorm door.” She could practically hear the smile in his voice.“Ok I will. Bye, Tony.” Gemma laughedGemma hung up, a small smile playing on her lips. She

Soon, the house filled with laughter and conversation as Tony’s parents, Judith and Martin, arrived. Judith brought in deviled eggs, a salad, and a couple of trays of cupcakes. Dee shook her head. “You shouldn’t have brought so much, Judith.”“Nonsense,” Judith replied with a snort. “I know how my two guys eat—and you’ve got two just like mine.”They all gathered around the dining room table, passing food and mostly teasing Tony and Gemma—but also giving Kyle plenty of grief for losing the bets he’d made against his sister. But as dinner was winding down and the turkey had almost been picked clean, Gemma’s text message tone went off. She pulled her phone from her pocket, expecting a note from Freddy, but it was Chase:Mom is upset you couldn't be here for dinner. I told her there's plenty of time. When Gemma didn’t reply, another message came through:I can't wait to see you Sunday. I’m still picking you up from the airport, right?Gemma groaned quietly. She couldn’t—or rather, wouldn

“Yeah, you look more like—what is Barbie’s little sister’s name?” Kyle teased.Gemma reached over, grabbed the sprayer from the faucet, and gave him a quick squirt.“Hey, hey!” Dee called out, her hands on her hips. “You’re getting my freshly mopped floors all wet.” She took the sprayer from Gemma with a mock stern look.Kyle smirked, triumphant. “You got in trouble.”Gemma ignored him as she finished peeling the potatoes. “Hey, where’s Tony?” she asked Kyle.“Last time I saw him, he was sprawled across my couch sawing logs. You kept him up most of the night.”“I came in early,” she smirked.“Yeah, early as in me shutting down the bar and driving all the way home.”“It’s such a long drive, Kyle,” Gemma teased. “And you shut the bar down at one last night because of the holiday.”“I’m going to go get him up—if the rest of us have to be up, so does he.” Gemma washed her hands and dried them off. She headed toward the door, and Kyle shook his head at her.“Gotta get your fix again this m

No sooner had she lain down than her phone buzzed with a text message on the nightstand.Gemma rolled over, the warm feeling of Tony’s kisses instantly vanishing as she watched the screen light up.Goodnight, Gems. Hope you are enjoying your family. Can’t wait to see you when you get back.Gemma let out a weary groan, the sound muffled by her pillow. Just reading that nickname—the one he insisted on using no matter how many times she had told him not to—made her stomach queasy. Chase just wouldn’t take a hint. She stared at the glowing text, the shadow of Colorado creeping back into her mind. With a decisive motion, she flipped the phone face down back on the nightstand. She wasn’t going to let him ruin tonight. Pulling the blankets around her shoulders, she closed her eyes and focused on the quiet, familiar sounds of her family's house, forcing herself to think only of Tony. But she had just fallen asleep when her phone went off again, the sudden vibration jarring her awake. Tony stood at the bar, filling a mug of beer. He topped it off and sent it sliding down the counter, then leaned back, his eyes fixed on the door. Matt came up behind him, his voice low. The following morning, as they gathered their belongings, Dee’s voice cut through the sound of the alarm. “Gemma, if you’re planning to shower before we hit the road, you’d better get to it now.”“No thanks. • Shortcake   Goodbyes

The house was full of music, and more than half the town. Gemma Havley’s family had gone all out for her going-away party. She was leaving small-town Florence, Oklahoma, for college in Bronson, Colorado. It was already going to be a big change for her, and she hated change. But her English teacher,
