Genevieve's POV

The glass doors of the Montclair Medical Group headquarters slid open, welcoming me with a blast of chilly air-conditioned air.

It was 7:45 AM on Monday morning. I straightened my blazer, adjusted the leather strap of my briefcase, and took a slow, steadying breath.

I was here strictly as the Senior Healthcare Operations Consultant. Nothing more, nothing less. Over the weekend, I had thoroughly reviewed our team’s audit strategy, forcing myself to look at Montclair Medical purely as a complex system of numbers, operational workflows, and budget allocations.

I rode the private executive elevator up to the top floor. My associate, Sarah, was already waiting outside the main boardroom with a tablet in hand.

"Morning, Gen!" Sarah greeted me, handing over a hot cup of black coffee. "The department heads are all inside. Dr. Montclair’s executive assistant just informed me that he’ll be joining us shortly."

"Thanks, Sarah," I said, taking a quick sip of the coffee. "Are all the department metric files ready?"

"Yup. Loaded and ready to project."

We stepped into the grand boardroom. The room was sleek, modern, and intimidating—dominated by a long dark wood conference table surrounded by senior physicians, financial directors, and department heads. I took my place at the front of the table, setting up my laptop with calm, practiced efficiency.

At exactly 8:00 AM, the heavy oak doors opened.

Leander walked in.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his presence immediately commanding the room's entire atmosphere. His dark eyes scanned the table briefly before settling on me for a fleeting second.

"Good morning, everyone. Please be seated," Leander said, his voice smooth and authoritative as he sat at the head of the table. "We’re here to officially begin the operational restructure of this hospital group. Apex Solutions has provided a detailed roadmap, and Miss Winslow will be leading the initiative."

He gestured toward me with a slight tilt of his chin. "Miss Winslow, the floor is yours."

I stepped forward, tapping a key on my laptop to bring up the first slide on the massive screen behind me.

"Thank you, Dr. Montclair," I began, my voice steady and confident. "Over the next six weeks, our team will conduct a comprehensive audit across all major departments—starting with emergency care, surgical scheduling, and resource allocation..."

For the next forty minutes, I presented our phase-one strategy. I felt Leander’s intense gaze on me the entire time, but I maintained complete composure, addressing the room, answering complex questions from department heads, and laying out clear timelines.

When the presentation concluded, the board members nodded in approval.

"Impressive start," Dr. Harrison remarked. "The board fully supports this timeline."

"Meeting adjourned," Leander declared smoothly. "Department heads may return to their duties. Miss Winslow, stay behind. We need to align on the executive oversight protocol."

The room cleared out quickly. Sarah gave me a subtle, reassuring nod before closing the boardroom doors behind her, leaving Leander and me completely alone in the massive, quiet space.

I gathered my files on the desk, keeping my posture rigid.

"Dr. Montclair," I spoke, breaking the silence as I clicked my pen shut. "If you have specific concerns regarding the executive protocol, we can schedule a ten-minute sync with my associate present."

Leander stood up from his chair and walked slowly around the long table toward me. He stopped just a few feet away, leaning casually against the edge of the polished wood, resting his hands in his suit pockets.

"You tried to pull yourself off this project on Friday," Leander said quietly. It wasn't a question; it was a plain, factual statement.

My fingers tightened around my pen, but I kept my face blank. "I requested a reassignment to avoid any perceived personal conflict of interest. My managing partner declined."

"He declined because I told him you were the only condition under which Apex would keep this contract," Leander replied, his voice calm, direct, and unyielding.

I looked up, meeting his sharp dark eyes. "So you pushed for me to stay? Is this about abusing your position to make things difficult for me, Leander?"

A faint, cold smirk touched the corner of his lips, though his eyes remained devoid of humor. "Abuse of power? No, Genevieve. Apex won the blind bid fair and square because your proposal was superior. But when I saw your name as the lead consultant on the final sign-off sheet, I had every right to reject your firm entirely."

He took a step closer, reducing the space between us.

"I didn't reject it," he continued, his tone dropping an octave, heavy with a dark, simmering intensity. "Because after five years of you vanishing like a coward into thin air, I wasn't about to let you walk away again when you were finally standing right in front of me."

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat, forcing myself to stand my ground.

"Five years ago has nothing to do with this contract," I said, setting my files down with a sharp click. "I am here to do a job. I expect us to maintain strict professional boundaries for the duration of this project."

"Professional boundaries," Leander repeated softly, as if testing the words on his tongue. He let out a low, humorless exhale. "Fine, Miss Winslow. We will be strictly professional."

He straightened up, buttoning his suit jacket with effortless grace, his face hardening back into a mask of pure executive detachment.

"My office is at the end of the hall," Leander stated coldly, turning toward the door. "You’ll be using the adjacent workspace for the duration of the audit. I expect daily progress reports delivered to my desk by 6:00 PM sharply."

Without waiting for my agreement, Leander opened the boardroom door and walked out, leaving me standing alone in the silent room with a rapidly beating heart.

Genevieve's POVBy 9:00 PM, the entire executive suite of Montclair Medical was eerily quiet. The custodial staff had already finished their rounds, leaving the dimly lit hallway outside Leander’s corner office bathed in a soft, low amber glow. Rain tapped relentlessly against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, mirroring the chaotic storm brewing inside my mind.My laptop screen flickered with rows of financial spreadsheets, but I hadn't typed a single digit in twenty minutes. Every time I looked at the dark wood door connecting my workspace to Leander’s suite, my pulse spiked.I needed to finalize the emergency budget plan for tomorrow’s 8:00 AM board meeting. After that, I could go home, collapse onto my bed, and put distance between us once again.Gathering the printed financial reports, I stood up, smoothed down my skirt, and took a slow, steadying breath.Just drop off the documents, sign off on the line, and leave.I walked across the carpet, knocked twice, and pushed the heavy

Every time he passed by the floor-to-ceiling glass partition, his presence drew every eye in the room—including mine, no matter how hard I tried to focus on my laptop screen. At 3:15 PM, my tablet chimed with an urgent alert.I glanced up just as the double doors of the executive suite swung open. Two senior nurses and the chief resident were moving quickly beside Leander, who was already stripping off his suit jacket and handing it to his assistant."Massive aortic dissection in Operating Room Four," the chief resident said hurriedly, trying to keep pace with Leander's long strides. "BP is dropping fast. Dr. Vance said it’s too complex for the attending team on shift."Leander’s posture changed instantly. The calm, aloof corporate executive

Genevieve's POVThe grand ballroom of the St. Regis was filled with soft classical violin music, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and the muffled chatter of high-society medical professionals. It was the annual Metropolitan Healthcare Gala, the official curtain-raiser event right before major hospital contracts kicked off. As the lead consultant for Apex Solutions, I had no choice but to attend.I stood near the edge of the room, holding a glass of untouched sparkling water. I chose a simple, tailored navy floor-length dress—professional, understated, and completely unremarkable. I wanted to blend into the velvet curtains if possible.I kept my eyes scanning the crowd, taking slow, deliberate breaths. The formal turnover meeting at Montclair Medical wasn't scheduled until Monday morning, but in elite circles like this, attendance was practically mandatory."Genevieve, right?"I turned around to see Dr. Harrison, a senior member of the Montclair advisory board, walking toward me with a w

Marcus, our managing partner, raised his crystal flute toward me, his smile wide and triumphant. "The youngest Senior Healthcare Operations Consultant to secure a multi-million dollar hospital overhaul. You out-performed every veteran firm in the region."Soft clinking sounds filled the room. My colleagues smiled, patting my shoulder, offering warm congratulations. I smiled back, taking a small sip of the sparkling win
