CHAPTER 10

The hallway held its breath.

Every employee within earshot had gone quiet, phones lowered, conversations abandoned mid sentence, all of them watching to see which way Killian would turn. Mara clearly expected only one answer. She stepped toward Olivia with the easy confidence of a woman who had never once lost this particular game.

"Since you enjoy creating scenes." Mara's smile was sharp as glass, gesturing toward the overturned bucket still sitting where it had landed the day before. "You can stay behind after hours and clean every hallway in this building yourself. And your pay will be docked for the disturbance you caused."

Olivia's mouth opened, some protest rising fast and instinctive, then died on her tongue. She knew exactly how this ended if she argued. She always knew. Swallowing whatever pride she had left, she bent to gather her supplies, murmuring a quiet apology that cost her more than anyone in that hallway would ever understand.

"She isn't apologizing."

Killian's voice cut clean through the silence, calm and absolute.

Mara turned, laughing lightly, already searching his face for the joke she assumed was coming. It never came.

"I reviewed the security footage." He said it evenly, like discussing weather, though every word landed like a verdict. "I watched both of them attack her first. The only reason she pushed back was because one of them slapped her across the face."

The color drained from both cleaners' expressions.

"We only did it because she disrespected Ms. Hart," one of them stammered, glancing toward Mara for backup that never came.

"So loyalty to your boss," Killian said, "gives you permission to assault a coworker?"

Neither woman answered. Neither had an answer that wouldn't damn them further.

By then the commotion had drawn the board members from their offices, gathering near the corner in a loose, uneasy cluster. Killian addressed them directly, his tone never rising, never needing to. "If footage of an employee assault inside this building ever reaches the press, every sponsor attached to this agency is going to start asking whether Hart Sports is capable of managing its own staff, let alone its athletes."

The board members exchanged glances that said everything Killian needed to hear. Losing him this early would be a public relations disaster none of them wanted to survive. Reluctantly, they nodded their agreement, and within the hour both cleaners were escorted out with their belongings in cardboard boxes.

Mara stood rigid throughout it all, fury simmering behind her composed expression, unable to fight the board without exposing exactly how much she'd wanted this outcome to go differently.

As the dismissed woman with the nose piercing passed Olivia on her way out, she paused just long enough to hiss, "This isn't over."

A cold thread wound through Olivia's chest, but she kept her face carefully blank and said nothing at all.

That afternoon, Coach Ramirez split the roster for their first full contact scrimmage, offense against defense, no holding back. A handful of veterans made their skepticism plain from the opening whistle, running routes half a beat late, ignoring audibles Killian called at the line, testing whether the celebrity captain actually understood the difference between talent and leadership.

Killian didn't argue with a single one of them. He simply adjusted, calling plays that exploited exactly the gaps their resistance created, exposing soft coverage on the outside, weak gap discipline up front, until the offense had scored four times in a row and even the most stubborn veterans stopped pretending they weren't impressed.

Ramirez blew the whistle early, waving the team in with something close to a grin on his weathered face.

Damon jogged up beside Killian as the players filed off the field, pulling his helmet off, sweat streaking down his temple.

"You've got talent." He said it like an admission wrung out of him under duress. "Now prove you can lead us when we're actually losing."

Killian nodded once, steady, certain. "I intend to."

Meanwhile, inside the executive suite, Olivia worked her way through the emptied offices, collecting trash bins, wiping down desks left cluttered from the day's chaos. When she reached Mara's office, the desk lamp was still on, papers spread across the surface where Mara had abandoned them mid conversation, careless in her hurry to deal with the fallout downstairs.

Olivia reached for the trash bin and froze.

A folder lay open beside Mara's keyboard, and the letterhead across the top page belonged to a corporate management firm Olivia didn't recognize. Her eyes scanned the paragraph beneath it almost against her will, and her stomach dropped straight through the floor.

Negotiations to acquire Hart Sports Agency. Full transition of staff and operations. Projected closing within ninety days.

Her mother's agency. Thirty years of her mother's life, sold off in secret to strangers who would strip it down to nothing and everyone in it, including Olivia, would simply cease to matter.

Footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Olivia's hands moved fast, sliding the papers back into position, or as close to their original position as her shaking fingers could manage, grabbing her mop just as the door swung open.

Mara stepped inside, and her gaze went straight to the desk before it lifted slowly to Olivia's face, something calculating and dangerous sliding into place behind her eyes.

"What exactly," she said, each word deliberate and cold, "were you looking at?"

Olivia's grip tightened around the mop handle, her pulse hammering so loud she was certain Mara could hear it, because they both knew, in that single frozen second, that Olivia had just seen something she was never supposed to find.

  • THE STAR PLAYER IS HER EX    HEADLINES

CHAPTER 9The apartment was dark except for the glow of the television, muted, casting flickering blue light across the small living room, and Olivia paused in the doorway with her key still in the lock, hoping against hope that Charles had fallen asleep in front of it like he sometimes did.He hadn't.He sat upright on the couch in his dinosaur pajamas, a scuffed football tucked under one arm like a teddy bear, his eyes drooping and snapping open again in the determined way of a six year old refusing to lose a battle against his own bedtime."Mommy." His whole face lit up the second he saw her, and he scrambled off the couch, football and all, before the smile suddenly dropped away. He'd seen the bruise. His small feet slowed halfway across the room, his eyes going wide and serious in a way that looked far too old for his face. "Mommy, who hurt you?"Olivia dropped to her knees right there in the doorway, ignoring the ache still radiating through her shoulder, and pulled him close be

CHAPTER 8 KIllian held the first-aid kit out between them, and for a long moment Olivia just stared at it like it might bite her.The security light above them flickered, buzzing faintly, throwing her face in and out of shadow. He could see the exact moment she decided fighting him on this wasn't worth the energy, her shoulders dropping half an inch, her jaw unclenching just slightly. She reached out and took the kit from his hand, careful not to let her fingers brush his this time."Thank you." Her voice was flat, polite in the way strangers were polite. "I can handle it from here."She didn't look at him once while she said it.That was what struck him hardest, more than the bruise darkening along her cheekbone or the way she cradled her swollen hand against her ribs like something breakable. It was the way her eyes stayed fixed somewhere over his shoulder, anywhere but his face, like meeting his gaze cost more than she had left to spend. The Olivia he remembered used to look peopl

  • THE STAR PLAYER IS HER EX    THE LAST PERSON I NEEDED

CHAPTER 7 The bathroom door clicked shut behind her, and only then did Olivia let herself fall apart. She pressed her back against the cold tile wall and slid down until she was sitting on the floor, knees pulled to her chest, her ruined hand cradled against her stomach. The tears came fast and ugly, the kind she hadn't let herself cry in years, not since the night she watched Killian kneel on David's porch with a torn abortion slip shaking in his hands.Seeing him again was already more than she could handle. Watching his face shift from that cold, unreadable mask to something close to horror when he found her on that filthy floor, that was worse. Seven years spent rebuilding herself into someone who didn't need anyone, and it had taken exactly one look from him to remind her how small she still felt underneath it all.She didn't know how long she sat there before Karen's voice carried through the door, frantic, calling her name."Olivia, open up, it's me."She dragged herself uprig

  • THE STAR PLAYER IS HER EX    WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU

CHAPTER 6Water dripped from Olivia's chin onto the tile, one slow drop at a time, and for a moment that was the only sound in the hallway.Killian didn't move. He couldn't. He stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the woman on the floor, and every furious thing he had rehearsed for seven straight years, every cold word he'd planned to say to her the moment they finally crossed paths, evaporated like it had never existed at all.Because that wasn't just some janitor gasping for breath in front of him. That was Olivia. Her hair hung in wet, ruined strands around her face. A red mark bloomed high on her cheek where someone had struck her, and her hand, God, her hand was already swelling, curled protectively against her chest like she was trying to hide it from the world. She was soaked through, shivering, filthy water dripping off her jaw onto a floor she'd probably spent all afternoon scrubbing clean. The anger he'd carried across an ocean and back, the anger that had fueled two cham

  • THE STAR PLAYER IS HER EX    HOW DARE YOU DEFY MARA LIKE THAT

CHAPTER 5Mara's shock lasted all of two seconds before her whole face rearranged itself into something practiced and pleased."Oh my God, Killian." She bit her lip, tilting her head, looking him over like she was checking to make sure he was real. "So you're our new team captain?""You two know each other?" The agent's brow lifted, glancing between them with obvious interest."Of course we know each other." Mara stepped in close, looping her arm through his before he could pull away, her voice dropping into something syrupy and intimate. "We go way back. High school, actually. Before my stupid stepsister ruined everything."Killian's expression didn't change. If anything, it went flatter, more bored, like he was watching a rerun of a show he'd never particularly liked. He said nothing, and Mara barely seemed to notice, already rambling on, her fingers tightening around his arm."We are so thrilled to have someone like him leading the Thunderbirds," she said, beaming at the agent now.
