Travis

"How was practice master Travis?" Mrs Johnson asked as I stepped into the house.

She had been the housekeeper even before I was born and was the closest thing to a mother I had ever had since mine had disappeared when I was two.

"The usual." I said, wiping an arm over my sweaty forehead.

The rest of practice had been more brutal than usual following the new guy's display. I needed an ice cold shower, and a few hours to myself with just my game console and dog.

"Lunch will be ready in a minute. Why don't you go_"

The rest of her words were cut off by the sound of my dog barking. I raised a brow at her. "Did someone come around? I saw an unfamiliar car in the driveway."

Her smile became brittle. "Uh, let's worry about that later. You must be famished and_"

The dog barked again, and I grinned. "Whoever it is, mimi doesn't sound too pleased to see them."

I turned to head upstairs and that's when I heard the sound of laughter followed by splashing. Someone was in the pool with my damn dog. What the_

"Who_"

"Master Travis, you've had a long morning_"

I ignored Mrs. Johnson, shrugging past her to get to the back of the house where the massive pool was. My gaze immediately fell on my dog Mimi leaping into the water with an excited bark.

"Canon ball!" A voice laughed, causing my gaze to immediately shift.

The man was laid out over the lounge chair, his face partially turned away. Somehow, my eyes decided to do a leisurely trip over his body. I took in his long, muscular legs exposed by the tiny white shorts. I swallowed as he shifted his leg, thigh muscles clenching and unclenching.

My gaze continued up over his shirtless torso, taking in the way his abs rippled with movement and the tuft of hair that went down to_

"Take a picture. It will last longer." I was snapped out of my dangerous thoughts by the amused voice. It took me a second for my brain to register that it sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

My head jerked up to meet the man's eyes. I staggered back in horror.

"What the hell are you doing here? Are you following me? You freaking creep!" I roared.

"Woah woah, hulk. Why don't we take a deep, soothing breath?" He smirked.

"How about I punch your teeth out? I think I'd prefer that." I growled. "You have two seconds to get lost before I lose it."

He cocked his head. "Has anyone told you that you need an anger management class? Lucky for you, I know the location of a few. It would really help with your game too."

I froze, fury washing over me. "There's nothing wrong with my game."

He blinked, "If you really believe that, then you shouldn't be the captain."

At that, all restraint went flying. I rushed forward, fist swinging and caught him in the jaw. His head snapped back as I made contact, but to my anger, he didn't lose his footing. Annoyed, I swung again.

I expected him to move away, but his gaze never left mine, allowing the second hit to land.

"I'm going to give you the grace of a third, and then I'm going to hit back." His voice had lost the teasing edge, and I hesitated, but not for long.

With fire driving through my veins, I raised my fist again, intent on taking him down.

"What do you think you're doing?" A sharp voice sliced through, halting me in my tracks.

I froze, eyes wide and spun around to face my father. Michael Moore was six feet tall and people had often said I was a carbon copy of him. My worst nightmare was turning into him someday.

My father was a cold, hard man. There might have been a heart beneath his rib cage at some point, but it had long since shriveled up and died. My mother had been smart enough to escape before he could break her. His wealth attracted people until they realized he was rotten and only excelled at destroying people.

"Father." I swallowed. "I didn't know you were back from your honeymoon."

His cold gaze shifted to where my new teammate stood and I swallowed. "He was just leaving." I blurted out. "He_"

"You look like a thug. Shower and get dressed. Helena is here and would like to speak with you."

I scoffed. "I have nothing to say to your newest arm candy father. If you'll excuse me."

I made to walk past him, but he grabbed me by the collar like a dog and pushed me back. "What did you just say to me?"

"I said she's your arm candy and I don't want to meet her." I spat. "You think you can brush the dust off trailer trash, put some diamonds on it and expect the rest of the world to pretend they don't know what she is? She's a gold digging bitch and_"

A crack sounded and the side of my face was suddenly burning. From the corner of my eye, I saw the blond guy step forward. I shot him a warning glare to stay away.

"Apologize right this instant." He growled.

"That's enough, Michael." The woman in question appeared behind my father, a small smile curving her painted red mouth.

There was something familiar about her, but I couldn't put my finger on it. But then again, with the number of surgeries she had had since the engagement, she was hardly recognizable.

"Travis will come around eventually." She purred, fingers curling over my father's arm. "But what matters most is that the boys get along."

The boys? What was she_

"Isn't that right, Hunter?"

And then all at once, everything clicked into place. Bile rose up my throat as my gaze flung from Helena to the blond guy.

"Oh we are getting along." My new step brother drawled, eyes on mine. "We're getting along perfectly."

Travis Everybody liked home games, and I guess I was the exception. There was something special about beating a team on their home turf. It made winning that much better. Sure, we didn't get the thunderous cheers and generally, we had to stay sharp after the game because of angry fans that could get brave enough to attempt to fuck with us, but the booing was nothing compared to the high. I was already pumped as I got on the team bus, even though it had been a long day and I hadn't gotten much sleep last night. "Finally decided to show up cap." Sammy called out as soon as he spotted me, prompting the others to call out their own greetings. I shook the hands they offered as I made my way to my usual seat. And froze. Irritation worked it's way through me as I spotted the blond in my seat. A rational voice reminded me that he couldn't have known this was Neal and I's space, but it seemed pretty convenient that out of the three empty rows, he had chosen that particular one. Hunter ra

Travis "Trav. Trav!" I snapped back to the present, blinking in confusion. "What?" Neal shot me a strange look. "You totally zoned out man. What the hell? Are you okay?" "Yeah. Sure." I raked my fingers through my hair. "I guess I'm just a bit exhausted, that's all." "We can meet some other time." He suggested. "No. No." I shook my head emphatically. "I've missed hanging with you. And anyway, I'm hungry. I'm looking forward to stuffing my face with something that isn't made for by a Michelin star chef." He scoffed. "The rich kid curse, I fear." I rolled my eyes at him with a chuckle. "Get outta here." The truth was that I had missed Neal. Since the whole scandal last month, plus the arrival of Hunter and his mother, I hadn't yet had a chance to see him. We had texted a few times, but it wasn't the same.I should have been excited about this surprise meet up tonight, but all I could about was Hunter. After our game tonight, I had found myself searching for him during the team

Hunter Sweat dripped into my eyes despite the fact that I was standing on ice. A smile curved my mouth as the scoreboard flashed red. Another score for us. I almost pitied our opponents for tonight. They didn't stand a chance. We were literally scrubbing the ice with them, but for the first time since I had fallen in love with hockey, my excitement wasn't just from winning. A part of me had been afraid that our synchrony during our team practices would be nowhere to be found during a real game, but tonight, Travis and i had truly moved as one from the first whistle blow. It was... Beautiful to say the least. And exhilarating. I couldn't get rid of the deranged smile that had been on my face from that first perfect pass. "Don't just stand there." Sammy snapped as he skated past me. "Creepy fucker." I let out a laugh. The rest of the team had quickly come around after that first practice. We hadn't yet gotten to the stage of inviting each other to sleepovers and braiding each o

Hunter There's a strange tension at dinner. As a matter of fact, there's always a strange tension when Travis and Michael are within ten feet of each other. I considered not coming for dinner at all after what I had put my body through during the brutal practice with Travis, but somehow, I found myself showering and shuffling downstairs while trying not to groan and whimper. Now, I was wishing I had just said fuck it to dinner. "You're in college?" My mother asked. "Yeah. I'm gonna graduate in two months time, I can't wait." Zahara said while peeking at Travis like she had done all night. Her presence at the dinner table had come as a surprise, and as I took her in again, I decided for the hundredth time that I didn't like our dinner guest. Apparently, she was the daughter of one of Mr. Moore's associates. I didn't need to be Einstein to know that they were being set up. Travis had shown more interest in his broccoli than her. That part I didn't understand. She seemed nice and

Travis I swung my stick and the puck went sailing... right into Hunter's waiting stick. I gritted my teeth, annoyed at ho impressive he was, which made no sense. It was more than clear why coach had brought him on as Neal's replacement. Hunter was fast, had a precision level that was rare on ice and could read me like a book. For the past two hours, we had been playing like we had been playing forever, and it was fucking beautiful. With just one glance from him, one shift of his feet, or the way his body tensed, I knew what he wanted from me. I had heard about telepathy on ice, and while our team had always had good chemistry, Hunter and I's was on another level. "Take the shot." Sammy called out at me. I shifted my gaze to Hunter, waiting for his silent signal. He cocked his head, a clear red flag. Instead of listening to Sammy's signal, I continued pushing forward, closer and closer to the net. I could sense Hunter on my heels, and a second later, he had sailed past me. I knew

  • Tainted ice: my stepbrother is my rival    Chapter seven

Hunter "I was open, why the hell didn't you pass to me?" I bit out for what had to be the millionth time. It didn't take a genius to realise what was happening, but I was annoyed to admit it had taken me a while to pinpoint the problem. But then again, it had never occurred to me that the team would be petty enough to risk their championship over a stupid sense of loyalty to Neal Matthews. Who by the way, deserved to be banned from ever touching a hockey stick again. The bastard had landed two fans in the emergency unit. He was a lose cannon by the look of things. It was only through the managing board's influence and a lot of money paid under the table that Neal wasn't sitting his erratic ass behind bars. Back to the present, it seemed my new teammates had decided to test my patience by acting like I was invincible. They had done their best to make sure I didn't come in contact with the puck since practice began hours ago. Rather than make a pass to me, they shot the puck wide.
