Travis

"No." The word was ripped out of my mouth before I could stop it.

Acid burned through my chest and I suddenly felt sick. It can't be. No. No. This can't be happening to me. This was a nightmare and any second now, I'll wake up.

There was no way in hell the blond asshole was my step brother. This had to be one of the levels of hell.

"No?" Hunter placed a hand over his heart with a fake flinch. "You're hurting my feelings brother."

"Im not your brother." I whirled on him with a roar.

"Travis, that's enough!" My father barked. "You'll_"

I didn't wait to hear the rest of what he had to say. Even though I knew I'd pay for my disobedience later, I was far more desperate to get away from all of them. And so I spun on my heels and rushed back into the house.

At the last second, I glanced over my shoulder at my dog. "Mimi, come."

As if I wasn't humiliated enough, the damn dog made a whining sound and scooted closer to Hunter. It was the pitying look on his face that was the final straw. I could take his amusement and derision, but fuck him, I didn't need to be pitied.

Growling, I raced through the house, ignoring Mrs Johnson calling my name.

Jumping into my Ford, I revved the engine and tore out of the driveway before placing a call to Sammy. At that moment, I suddenly missed Matthews. He had been the only one on the team who knew my family dynamics.

Hockey was supposed to be my safe space from all of this, but damn Hunter had snuck in and was stealing everything from me. My team, my family and even my dog. I had to find a way to get rid of him.

"Man, what's up?"

"Where are you?" I could hear the sound of music at the background.

"At a little get together around the square."

"Send me the address."

He let out a bark of laughter. "Stop playing around. This isn't really your scene, man. What's going on?"

I considered telling him, but gritted my teeth instead. "I'm just a little wound up and need some stress relief. Maybe the get together will do me some good. Send the address."

"Sure thing." He said without hesitation.

I glanced down at my wrinkled outfit and made a face. I hadn't even had time to shower and change clothes. But I couldn't turn around now. I guess they were going to have to deal with it.

The location was a gothic style house at the upper east side. Cars were parked half hazardly outside, and I made my way inside to where a throng of people were dancing, drinking and chatting. It didn't take me long to find Sammy.

"Hey you actually came?" His eyes were wide as they took me in. "I really thought you were pulling my legs bro."

I forced a smile and shook my head. "Tell me there's something better than beer around here."

His eyes went even wider. All my teammates knew me as the stuck up captain. I didn't go drinking or partying with the rest of them. Hockey was my entire life and I refused to let silly distractions take it away from me.

"I always had a feeling Neal Matthews was holding you back." Sammy laughed, as he tossed me a bottle of something unfamiliar.

I didn't care what it was. I just needed it had to be strong enough to burn out the dark feeling settling in my gut.

Without another word, I unscrewed the bottle and poured it down my throat, flinching at the hot burn of it. "Holy shit. This shit is pure acid."

"It's magic in a bottle!" He whooped. "It's gonna loosen you up and make you forget everything. Well, except how to play hockey."

I chuckled.

"I was trying to stalk that new guy's socials. He's cagey as hell. There's barely anything about him on the internet. I did find out that his name is Hunter Bailey."

My drink went down the wrong way and I choked. I had come here to escape from Hunter. I didn't want to hear anything about him. I was just about to say so, when his next words reached me.

"I did find a girl though. Seems our new teammate is into goth baddies."

"He's my step brother." I heard myself say.

Sammy's jaw dropped open. "You're messing with me. How long have you known about this? I can't believe you didn't say anything!"

"I've known for about two hours longer than you. It took me by surprise too." I gritted my teeth. "And trust me, I'm not pleased about it in the least."

"How did that happen? That's crazy."

"My dad got married a month ago. I didn't see much of his new woman until the wedding." I shrugged. "I knew she had a son, but I was told he couldn't make it for some reason. I figured she had a little kid or something."

Not a six foot three, cocky, blond, pain in the ass, hockey player.

"Got home after practice and there he was." My mind suddenly provided me with an image of his abs and that line of hair through it.

What the hell.

I shook my head to dispel the image immediately.

"Forget about your step brother. He's a show off on the ice, but we're yet to see him handle the pressure of a real game." He scoffed. "If he messes up our chance to get to the championships, coach will destroy him."

"Yeah, he_"

He suddenly whistled, eyes fixed over my shoulders. "You're not going to believe who just walked in?"

"Hunter?" My heart sped up. What was he doing here?

"No." Sammy shot me a strange look. "Lana. And she's headed straight toward you. Brace yourself."

"Wait. No. I don't want to_"

But it was too late. Sammy slipped away, smirking and a second later, I felt a small, soft body press up behind me.

"Hey baby. Missed me?"

With a silent groan, I started to turn around, a smile pasted on my face. A smile that died as I took in the scene before me.

Lana's hand was caught midair in the right grip of none other than my dear stepbrother.

Travis I was undoing the lace on my skating shoes when someone let out a quiet 'holy shit'. I whirled around immediately, and noticed that most of the guys' attention was fixed on the flat screen TV hanging at the far wall of the locker room. Confused, I drifted toward the gathering crowd. "... As of this morning_" a middle aged reporter was saying. "The NHL has already released an official statement following the statement put up by the two eye witnesses at the time of the assault. The case of star player Neal Matthews attacking a fan at the beginning of the season caused large waves in the media, with him apologizing and both his team management and league removing him temporarily from the team roster until further investigation." My stomach lurched. "Investigation has been ongoing with only one witness agreeing to speak up, but that all changed last night when they finally spoke up to defend Mr. Matthews." The man continued. "According to the statement by the witnesses, Mr. Ma

TravisThe first hit came barely one minute into the game.A defenseman built like a freight train drove his shoulder into my chest the second I collected the puck. The impact rattled through my ribs, but I’d been expecting it. I absorbed the check, spun off the boards, and shoveled the puck toward Law before crashing into the glass. The crowd erupted, hungry for blood. Away games were always hostile, but this arena took things personally. Every touch of the puck earned us a chorus of boos. Every whistle brought another wave of jeers.I grinned despite myself. This was what I loved about hockey. The fast, unforgiving draw of it. “Behind you!” Sammy yelled.I pivoted just in time to intercept a pass, batting it down with my stick before launching forward. We immediately fell into position. Law took the left lane, while Sammy streaked down the middle. I waited until the defender committed before sliding the puck across.Law's stick hooked it.I watched with a smile as the puck sailed

HunterWatching hockey when I was supposed to be playing it was torture. I sat halfway up the arena stands with my elbows braced on my knees, glaring holes into the ice while our team warmed up below. The roar of the crowd rolled around me in waves, but all I could hear was the scrape of skates carving fresh lines into the rink. That should’ve been me. Instead, I was stuck wearing jeans and a team hoodie like some glorified mascot. My fingers curled into fists. This was all Travis' fault. The asshole probably enjoyed reminding me he could bench me whenever he pleased.Down on the ice, Law skated backward while chirping at Sammy. Sammy responded by spraying him with a shower of ice, earning a loud string of curses that carried all the way up into the stands.“Mind if I sit?”I glanced sideways. Zahara smiled politely, already lowering herself into the empty seat beside me.“Pretty sure it’s public seating.” I drawled, more than a little suspicious that she had chosen to sit at my side

TravisSomething was off.I felt it the second I stepped onto the team bus.The aisle was the same. Law was already arguing with another of the guys over whose playlist deserved custody of the speakers. A couple of the rookies were tossing protein bars at each other when they thought Coach Warren wasn’t looking. Sammy was sprawled across two seats like he owned the damn vehicle.Everything looked normal.Yet something was… missing.I scanned the bus without meaning to. No blond head shoved against the window. No beat-up headphones.Hunter Bailey wasn't tucked into one corner by himself pretending he didn’t notice the rest of us.The realization landed harder than it should have.Right. He was benched.Coach had announced it that morning, making some excuse about recovery protocols, even though everyone knew I’d pushed hardest for it.I’d gotten exactly what I wanted. Then why did the bus feel so damn empty?“You planning on standing there all day, Cap?” Law called. “Or are you waiting

Hunter I stood rooted to the spot long after Jack’s truck had vanished around the bend, my pulse still pounding in my ears.Thirty days.Coach O’Brien. The words echoed through my skull like a broken record.Beside me, my mother hadn’t moved. Her arms were folded tightly across her chest, her gaze fixed on the empty road as though Jack might suddenly reappear.I swallowed, then turned to her. “We need to go to the police.”She didn’t even look at me. “No.”I stared at her. “No? What do you mean no?” I repeated. Her head snapped toward me. “I said no.”“Mum_”“I heard you the first time.”My temper flared. “Jack just threatened us! Did you hear him?"“He blackmailed us.”“He threatened us with prison!”She rounded on me so fast I instinctively took a step back. “And whose fault would that be?” she hissed. The words hit harder than I expected.I clenched my jaw. “So that’s it?” I asked quietly. “We just let him extort us?”Her laugh was hollow. “You think the police are going to save u

Hunter "You are good?" I glanced over at Ivan who had been peering at me at intervals since the drive back to my home. I didn't know what he was seeing on my face, but hoped I was managing to hide the truth. Because the truth made no sense. What happened at that alley made no fucking sense. I had been debating with myself about my next course of action. Storm into Travis' room and ask him what the fuck was that was option A. Option B went more like pretending the whole thing didn't happen, and maybe moving out of the house entirely. I was long overdue to get my own place. Somewhere I didn't have to see Travis daily. Maybe I could even get traded after this season. "Hunter?" Ivan called. I blinked back to the present. "Yeah, I'm good. Peachy." "The club did not do you good." He pointed out."Nah, it was okay. It was a great idea. It helped." Did it really? "The purple haired lady came back pretty quick." He smirked at me. "You weren't up to the task? Or she was disappointed b

Hunter There's a strange tension at dinner. As a matter of fact, there's always a strange tension when Travis and Michael are within ten feet of each other. I considered not coming for dinner at all after what I had put my body through during the brutal practice with Travis, but somehow, I found

Travis I swung my stick and the puck went sailing... right into Hunter's waiting stick. I gritted my teeth, annoyed at ho impressive he was, which made no sense. It was more than clear why coach had brought him on as Neal's replacement. Hunter was fast, had a precision level that was rare on ice

Hunter "I was open, why the hell didn't you pass to me?" I bit out for what had to be the millionth time. It didn't take a genius to realise what was happening, but I was annoyed to admit it had taken me a while to pinpoint the problem. But then again, it had never occurred to me that the team wo

Hunter By the time my alarm rang the next morning, my eyes felt raw from staring into the dark all night long. I hadn't gotten a wink of sleep, and it was all because of damn Travis. I knew he would be a problem when mum first told me she was getting married to Mr. Moore. I had already known abou
