Chapter II

Freya

“Did anyone see?” I asked, my voice low.

“No,” Miss Elara replied, then she continued, “infact, no one noticed and they were all… distracted. They thought I took him out to chastise him.”

A bit of relief washed over me. Theo was quiet and calm now, the energy around had settled. The teacher was still staring at me. There was just something off about her.

I swallowed and asked the question that was sitting at the back of my mind, “How did you know?”

Something changed in her expression and she had a glint in her eyes.

She opened her hand, and her fingers slowly grew longer and sharper into a claw. My heart slammed against my ribs. She was one of us. That explained the strange scent I had picked up earlier.

Before I could say anything, the classroom door flung open. We all turned in fear, but it was only Scarlet.

“Finally, found you, Is he okay?”

“Aunty Scarlet!” Theo pulled away from me and ran into her arms. I looked up at Miss Elara who looked confused now with her brows lifted up. Her claws had already vanished, replaced by normal fingers.

I stood up straight and faced her, “You’ll keep quiet about this, won’t you?”

Her eyebrows lifted slightly. “Of course… you have nothing to worry about.”

I turned to Scarlet. “Let’s go.”

We had only taken a few steps toward the door when Miss Elara’s voice stopped me

“The child is not meant to be here, send him back to where he belongs.”

I turned and glared at her, “that’s not in your position to decide.”

She gave a small, knowing smile. “Of course.”

We left her standing alone in the classroom.

As we were walking out of the building, Theo squeezed my hand so tight. “Mom… I’m feeling sleepy.”

“Really?” I looked down at him.

He tilted his head up, his eyes still somewhat gold had overshadowed his normal blue eyes and his eyelids were already drooping. His body was stressed out and the marks were probably spreading again.

Scarlet was a few steps ahead of us. Suddenly I got a quick wicked scent like someone dangerous was close by… really close by. “Scarlet!”

She didn’t hear me. She unlocked the car and went in. Theo was growing weaker by the second. I quickly scooped him up and held him close to my chest. I sniffed the air, turning my head in every direction but I couldn’t place where the scent was coming from.

Just opposite our car, a sleek black vehicle sat waiting. My instincts screamed at me to run. I paused and reached for my phone to call Scarlet but her line rang only twice before cutting off. I sniffed again, she was definitely in the car.

Heart pounding, I braced myself and walked towards the car, letting my paws slide out just enough to be ready. I reached the passenger side and opened the door.

Scarlet was sitting there, visibly shaking with fear.

I quietly slid in, holding Theo gently. He was already fast asleep on my shoulder. The scent inside the car felt controlled like trained wolves trying not to be noticed.

I shut the door.

“Who the fuck are you people?!” I demanded.

My eyes moved to the rearview mirror. Two males and a female sat in the back, all dressed in matching black outfit. They look like warriors… like guards…

“If I may?” The male on the right spoke first, “We are from the Blackmoon Kingdom.”

“Blackmoon?” Scarlet whispered, her voice shaky. I glanced at her with pity, she still looked terrified.

My own heart raced so fast, I feared it would wake Theo. Blackmoon Kingdom? I had heard that name before… yeah… the place I had worked as a server years ago, the night my life changed forever. These people didn’t even smell like common wolves, their power was obvious.

“You belong to royalty?” I asked.

“Yes.”

What in the world?! Am I in trouble?… How did they even find me and what do they want with me?

I looked down at my son, asleep peacefully in my arms. Last I remembered, I was a commoner and not in relation to any royal member.

“What do you want?” I asked, trying to steady my voice.

“Thé Alpha King has summoned his son.”

The words hit me like a slap. Alpha King? His Son? Perhaps they were joking. I let out a small bitter laugh but their faces remained deadly serious.

My expression shifted from confusion to pure fear. No… It can’t be.

“Why should I believe you?” I challenged.

“You already know we aren’t normal,” The female spoke this time, her tone cold. “We shouldn’t waste time, chitchatting here.”

It was as if I had fallen into a deep pit. I stared at Theo… I remembered that night at the Blackmoon Kingdom… The night I had drunk too much and found the courage to… So the stranger slept with… Years ago… The man whose face I couldn’t clearly remember… Was the Alpha King?

Fuck.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.” I said firmly. “ And I’m definitely not handling my son over to your Alpha King.” Besides, he chose to abandon me after the night we were together. He made his choice, he should stick with it.

“You—“ The female started talking but male who spoke first tapped her, letting her relax.

Then he nodded once. “We await your response. You are to decide whether to follow us with the child. Reach us before dawn tomorrow.”

He dropped a small white card on the car handle. Then they unlocked the doors and stepped out without another world.

I rested my head in my palm, eyes closed. How did I let this happen? How did they find me?

We sat quietly for a few minutes. Scarlet finally adjusted herself in the driver’s seat.

“I’m sorry, Scarlet.” I whispered. The trouble I kept dragging her into…

“It’s okay.” She said softly and started the engine. The black car had already driven away.

We drove home in complete silence. I was supposed to be at work at the clinic today, but Theo mattered more than a job that barely pays enough.

Now, I had so much more to worry about. I caught myself biting my lip hard.

There had to be a way out… Out of this mess… Out of this horrific reality. I couldn’t go back there and risk exposing my son to anyone especially with the powers he carried.

Chapter XVIII FREYA The palace library was a massive room lined with ancient books and scrolls. Today, I was more amazed than the first time I came here with Tasha. At the time, I didn’t get the time to do much research because I needed to check on Theo. This time, I had slipped away after lunch while Scarlet took Theo to play in the gardens. I spent hours searching for anything about powerful young wolves, uncontrollable abilities, or strange markings like the ones on Theo’s back. Just because it calmed down a bit doesn’t mean we should forget the main reason for coming here. I found nothing comforting. Instead, I stumbled across old symbols carved into the edges of some scrolls, the same strange markings I had noticed in the palace architecture. They looked like something meant to contain power… or magic. A chill ran down my spine. I was still staring at one of the symbols when I felt a strong familiar presence behind me. Damon. “Looking for ways to hide my son again?” he

Chapter XVII Freya Some days later, Scarlet was gone before breakfast. For the past four days this was her routine. I had asked her about it and she said I should meet her in the courtyard if I wanted to know. Theo was with his father last night… My wolf didn’t have a problem with it but I did. My son had insisted on staying with the King and Damon accepted him happily. I didn’t want to talk to him after I saw him that day with Seraphine, and especially hearing what that maid said about me and my son being sent away. I know it was a mere rumour but how true was it? I still wonder why he decided to look for a Luna just after my return with my son. Why not then… or later? I find it so hard to understand. I have been avoiding both the ladies and him because they screamed the opposite of peace. I didn’t even speak with him when I went to pick up Theo. Gladly, I found Scarlet in the outer training courtyard, already drenched in sweat. She wore borrowed training leathers that were ob

Chapter XVI Freya Later that evening, I had left Theo with Scarlet just so I could walk the palace a little. I moved to the gardens which seemed too peaceful. The last time I came out here, Damon was here waiting for me. Or expecting me like he said. I took a few steps forward when I heard some giggling. I looked in the direction, it was Lady Seraphine and Damon. They walked slowly along the flower-lined path side by side. They had some distance away from me but I heard that giggle very clearly. My wolf was restless and then my claws shot out from my fingers. I stood still. Maybe I can try again to see if I can hear what they were on again. I thought to myself and prayed for my powers to work. “You are such a—“ The lady’s voice came in again but a sharp pang bit across my ear. I hissed in pain. This stuff was easier when I was much younger and now that I may need it, it’s hard? Why then did it come back. I grit my teeth against my jaw. At that moment, I regretted why I had c

Chapter XV King Damon I stood near the main arena, arms crossed, watching warriors spar in the distance. My wolf was unusually restless today and part of me wondered if all these was a mistake… bringing her to the open, pushing too soon, but another part, the one that had missed five years of my son’s life, shut the thoughts out. Turning my head, I saw Theo arrive with Freya and Scarlet trailing a few steps behind. The boy’s eyes widened at the sight of warriors shifting mid-fight. Perhaps, he was amazed by powerful wolves clashing before returning to human form… I want to believe it wasn’t his first time seeing such things. He stayed close to his mother’s side, but I caught the spark of curiosity in his gaze. I smiled and welcomed them as they got closer. “Dad?” Theo called out softly. The sound hit me harder than any sword blow. I crouched down to his level, keeping my voice steady. “Would you like to watch them train up close?” I asked. Theo glanced at Freya… perhaps

Chapter XIVFreyaThe morning after the feast, the palace felt even more overwhelming. I had barely slept, my mind replaying how those ladies smiled at Damon, touched his arm, and laughed at his minimal responses as if they were the funniest things they’d ever heard. The way he held that lady and danced with her... my wolf was furious. Now, Scarlet and I were walking through the eastern gardens with Theo when the ladies appeared. They moved as if they owned the place, and I almost rolled my eyes. The auburn-haired lady spotted us first and approached with graceful steps. “Lady Freya?… Correct me if I’m wrong,” she said warmly, her voice like honey; I wouldn't even blame Damon if he fell for her already.“That’s correct.”“Oh, I’m Lady Seraphine Valemont. I… heard about your son…” She said, looking at me with those innocent brown eyes that looked deceiving to me.“It must have been so difficult raising him alone in the human world. You’re incredibly strong.” She continued.“And what ex

Chapter XIII King Damon Long tables rasped under the scent of roasted meats, spiced wines, and silver platters piled high with delicacies in the dining hall. The entire court had gathered for the welcome feast, I sat at the head of the main table. My expression remained neutral as the three noble ladies were seated near me. Lady Seraphine Valemont smiled softly from my right, her hair catching the light like warm copper. She spoke gently about alliances and the beauty of the gardens, her voice so soothing. Lady Kaelith Stormrune sat a little further down, her silver-blonde braid resting over one shoulder. She ate with warrior efficiency, occasionally shooting glances my way, it looked like she was assessing me like I was a threat. Lady Selene Viremont, on my left, kept her eyes lowered, offering smiles and soft-spoken compliments. She was a shy one. Lord Varek watched his daughter with barely concealed pride from across the table. I played my role well, polite nods, good
