“No,” I said. “No. It’s not possible.”

Hilda hadn’t moved from her chair. She had that terrible patience on her face, the kind healers wear when they’re waiting for the truth to finish arriving.

“Merliya—”

“I was a virgin, Hilda. Two days ago. You cannot— people don’t— it doesn’t happen like that.” I was pacing her kitchen, three steps, turn, three steps, my arms wrapped around myself. “It takes weeks to scent a pregnancy. Everyone knows that. Weeks.”

“For most bloodlines, yes.”

“Then you’re smelling something else. Soap. His cologne. Something.”

“I know what I’m smelling.” Her voice was soft and immovable, a hand on a struggling patient. “But you’re right that it shouldn’t be there. Not this soon. Not this strong.” She stood. “Which is why we’re going to my clinic, and we’re going to find out what’s actually going on inside you. Right now, before you wear a trench in my floor.”

The clinic was three rooms behind her house, whitewashed and smelling of dried herbs and antiseptic. I’d woken up in one of these beds a week ago, broken and bleeding. Now I sat on the edge of the exam table with my heart trying to climb out of my throat while Hilda drew blood from my arm with hands that didn’t shake even slightly. One of us had to be steady, and it wasn’t going to be me.

“How long?” I asked.

“For the standard test, minutes. For the deep panel, an hour.” She labeled the vial without looking at me. “Talk to me while we wait. This Jake. What do you actually know about him?”

“He’s… he was at the club. He’s from the capital, I think. He said work brings him out this way.” I closed my eyes and tried to gather the pieces of a man out of one night. “He’s older than me. He has money — the hotel was… it was the kind of place I’ve only cleaned, never slept in. He asked if I was sure. Every time, he asked if I was sure.”

“That’s who he was to you. I’m asking what he is.” Hilda set the vial in her little centrifuge and turned to face me, arms crossed. “Because here’s the thing you’re not going to want to hear. A pregnancy that scents inside a day isn’t about the mother, Merliya. It never is. It’s about the sire. It means potency. Old blood. The kind of dominant line that shows up in medical texts, not in nightclubs.”

The machine hummed between us.

“You’re saying he lied to me.”

“I’m saying nobody named ‘just Jake’ throws a scent like the one coming off you.” She pulled the first strip, dipped it, and we both watched the little window like it was a door something might come through.

One line surfaced. Then, dark and certain and impossible, a second.

The room tilted. I heard myself make a sound that wasn’t quite a word.

Hilda didn’t say I told you. She crossed to me and held my shoulders while the world rearranged itself, while everything I’d survived stacked itself up behind this one new fact and the whole tower swayed.

Pregnant. Nineteen days after my family burned. Eight days after my mate rejected me in front of five hundred wolves. Two days after I was sold at auction for ten thousand and climbed out a window with my wrists bleeding.

Pregnant, by a stranger, in a world that had already decided I deserved nothing.

“I can’t,” I whispered. “Hilda, I can’t. I can’t even keep myself alive. Corvain is out there. Silverpine is out there. If they find me—” My voice cracked down the middle. “If they find me now, it’s not just me anymore.”

“Then they don’t find you.” Her grip tightened. “Breathe. We’ll think. We’ll plan. You have me, and nobody knows you’re here, and we have time.”

The centrifuge chimed. The deep panel.

Hilda gave my shoulders a last squeeze and went to read it, and I watched her face because her face had always told me the truth faster than her mouth. I watched her scan the results once. Then again, slower. Then I watched every drop of color leave her.

“Hilda?”

She looked up at me, and my fearless friend — the one who’d lied to my face about danger every day for a week to keep me calm, the one who patched up warriors and never flinched — looked afraid.

“The hormone signature.” Her voice came out careful, each word set down like it might break. “There are markers here I’ve only ever seen referenced in the old texts. Dominant-line markers. Merliya, this reads like—” She stopped. Tried again. “This is what royal blood looks like.”

The word landed in the small white room and used up all the air.

“Merliya.” Hilda set the paper down. “Who exactly did you sleep with?”

Silverpine — Lord Silas CorvainThe cell was empty.Corvain stood in the doorway with his coat still buttoned against the dungeon chill and looked at the abandoned ropes on the floor, the cot dragged beneath the window, the gap in the bars with its edges scraped bright and smeared brown where she’d bled forcing herself through.Behind him, the guards had gone the color of old tallow. Somewhere up the spiral stairs, he could hear Alpha Dayn shouting at someone, the words lost, the fury clear.Corvain crouched. He picked up a frayed loop of rope, turned it in his gloved fingers, examined the fibers where she’d sawed through it against raw stone. Twenty minutes of work, he judged. Perhaps thirty. With bound hands, in the cold, after a beating and a rejection and an auction. He smiled.“Sir,” the auction house steward said nervously, “the pack extends its deepest apologies. Naturally your payment will be returned in full&

  • The Alpha King’s obsession.   Chapter nine

Alpha King Jake POV“Cancel the council session.”My steward stopped so abruptly that the papers in his arms slid sideways. In six years, through two border disputes, one assassination attempt, and a rogue incursion that cost us forty warriors, I had never once cancelled a council session.“Your Majesty, the northern delegates arrived last night. Alpha Rennick has waited three weeks for—”“Then he can wait one more day. Cancel it.”I turned back to the map table before he could argue. Behind me I heard the careful silence of a man rearranging his understanding of his king, and then the door closing softly. The map showed the capital and its districts, marked with pins my guards had placed through the night. The club. The streets around it. The hotel. And beyond that, nothing. She had walked out of my room at dawn and dissolved into a city of two hundred thousand wolves like smoke.Liya. Half a name, given d

  • The Alpha King’s obsession.   Chapter Eight

The sun was fully up by the time I reached Hilda’s street, and I felt every hour of the night before in my bones.I’d walked most of the way. The hotel had been closer to town than I remembered, or maybe shame just made distances shorter. Either way, I slipped through her gate with my heels in my hand and my dress wrinkled beyond saving, praying she was still asleep. She was sitting at the kitchen table with two cups of tea already poured.“Well, well.” She didn’t even look up from her cup. “The dead walk among us.”“Don’t.”“I’m just saying. I got a five-word text at midnight and then nothing. I nearly called the border patrol.” Her mouth curved. “Then I remembered the way that man was looking at you and decided the border patrol would only be in his way.”Heat crawled up my neck. “Hilda.”“Was he kind to you?”The question was gentler than the teasing, and it caught me off guard. I thought of him asking, over and over, if I was sure. Checking. Making the choice mine every single tim

Alpha King Jake POVI woke at dawn out of old habit, military and Alpha both. The bed beside me was empty. My wolf snapped to attention. Where is she?Her clothes were gone along with her shoes, phone. She'd left without a word.My wolf growled, unsettled. He'd been strange about her all night, pressing close, wanting to mark and claim a woman who wasn't our mate. We would have known if she were. And yet there'd been a pull there, something he recognized even if I didn't.I rang for my old butler in the next room."Good morning, Alpha King, I already—" He stopped in the doorway, nostrils flaring, his face going pale.I was on my feet at once, wolf snarling. "What is it?""Forgive me." He recovered, but his voice carried something careful. "I didn't take you for a man who'd… sow wild oats with a woman already carrying.""What are you talking about?""The she wolf who was here all night. Her scent's still thick in the air." He hesitated. "As is her cub's."The floor seemed to tilt. "You

  • The Alpha King’s obsession.   Chapter six

Hilda covered my fading bruises, styled my auburn hair into loose waves, and pushed me into heels I could barely stand in.When I looked in the mirror, I didn't recognize the woman looking back. Beautiful. Confident. Unbroken. I smiled at her, and for once she smiled back like she meant it.The club was everything Hilda promised. Loud, crowded, overwhelming in the best possible way.We drank. We danced. We laughed. For a few hours I forgot the broken bond, the murder no one would let me deny, the auction and the dungeon and Corvain's nightmare eyes. I forgot everything but the music and the lights and the pure animal joy of being free.I was weaving back toward our table when I felt it. A presence. Powerful. Watching.I turned.A man stood a few feet away, and my breath caught in my throat. Silver-white hair that caught the club lights. Sharp, elegant features. Eyes like molten gold. He looked young, early thirties at most, but he carried himself with the weight of someone who command
