The full moon hung brightly in the night sky, Shining on the Midnight Pack’s central clearing.
Elara Voss stayed at the edge of the crowd with her worn cloak which was pulled tight around her shoulders as if it could shield her from the stares she knew were coming. At twenty-four, she had learned exactly where she belonged in the pack hierarchy, she was frmly at the bottom. Her huge soft bold curves, and generousity, had always marked her as different where as other she-wolves were slim and athletic. They were built for speed and battle while Elara was all broad hips, thick thighs, and a full belly that strained against the simple green dress she’d chosen for the occasion. The fabric clung in ways that made her self-conscious, but it was one of the few things she owned that didn’t look too old. She adjusted the basket of healing herbs on her arm, the familiar scents of lavender and moonroot grounding her. As the pack’s assistant healer, she was invisible but useful. Tonight, though, every wolf in the pack had gathered to witness the ascension of their new Alpha, Kai Blackthorn. Elara felt nervous, she hadn’t seen much of Kai since he returned from the border wars three years ago. Elara was sure he'll be taller, broader, and look more terrifying than the young man who had once broken a girl’s heart in front of the entire pack. That night was never forgotten by the gossip circles. He had felt the mate bond snap into place with some poor, unremarkable she-wolf and publicly rejected her on the spot. “The Luna of Midnight Pack must be strong. A warrior, not… this.” he said. Elara had never learned the girl’s name. She preferred it that way. Knowing fully well that it would make the cruelty feel too real. A drumbeat rolled through the clearing, deep and resonant. The ceremony was beginning. Elara stayed near the back, half-hidden behind a younger wolves, but the Moon Goddess seemed to have other plans. Alpha Kai strode into the center of the clearing like he owned the moonlight itself. He was breathtaking in a certain way with his honed muscle, dark hair cropped short, a jagged scar running from his left temple to his jaw. His black ceremonial tunic stretched across powerful shoulders, and his presence made the air feel thicker. Every unmated female in the pack watched him with hungry eyes. Elara stood breathless for a few seconds. A strange warmth bloomed low in her belly, pulling at something deep inside her chest. She frowned, pressing a hand to her sternum. It is definitely indigestion or just my nerves, she told herself. The pack elder, Mira with silver hair raised her arms. “Tonight, under the full moon’s blessing, we welcome our new Alpha. Kai Blackthorn, son of the fallen, guardian of the Midnight Pack. May the Goddess grant him wisdom, strength, and a Luna worthy of our legacy.” Kai’s sharp gaze scanned over the crowd. For a of a second, then it landed on Elara. Her heart slammed against her ribs. Then the bond exploded to life like lightning striking her spine. A golden thread of pure energy snapped taut between them, flooding her veins with heat, need, and an overwhelming sense of recognition. Her wolf, usually quiet and subdued, surged forward with a joyful howl inside her mind. “He's my mate, Mine.” Elara gasped, as her basket slipped from her numb fingers. The herbs scattered across the grass. Every head turned , whispers erupted. “Elara Voss? The chubby healer?” “She can’t be…” Kai’s golden eyes locked on her. Shock, then horror crossed his face. A deep growl tore from his throat, but his words cut like ice. “No.” Elara’s world shattered. Tears The entire clearing seemed to freeze as every wolf scented the change in the air. Kai’s head turned toward her. His golden wolf eyes now widened in shock, then a possessive growl tore from his throat echoing across the clearing, raw and primal. “No,” he rasped, the word cutting through the silence like a blade. Whispers erupted immediately. “Is that… Elara Voss?” “The healer? The fat one?” “She can’t possibly be…” Elara’s cheeks burned with humiliation. She wanted to sink into the earth. The bond was singing, pulling her toward him with magnetic force, but Kai’s expression was furious. The same cold rejection she had heard stories about was written all over his face. He took one step forward, then stopped, fists clenched at his sides. “This is a mistake.” Elder Mira looked between them, her face paling. “The Goddess does not make mistakes, Alpha. The bond has chosen, Elara Voss is your fated Luna.” A cruel laugh cut through the murmurs. Lila, one of the pack’s elite warriors and a notorious bully who had tormented Elara for years, pushed forward. Her lithe, athletic body gleamed under the moonlight as she spoke. “Her? Our Luna? She can barely keep up on a training run. How is she supposed to stand beside our Alpha in battle? Look at her!” More laughter arose through the crowd. Elara wrapped her arms around her soft belly, wishing she could disappear. The bond’s warmth warred with the ice spreading through her chest. This couldn’t be happening. Not to her and definitely not front of everyone. Kai’s jaw flexed. For a moment, something almost like pain flickered across his features. But then his Alpha mask slammed back into place. “The pack needs strength,” he said, with his voice low and dangerous. “Not… complications.” The words landed like blows. Elara lowered her chin, are tears rolled down her eyes. A heavy silence fell among the clearing. Kai stared at her, his gaze dragging over her curves with an intensity that made her skin prickle with unwelcome heat. The bond thrummed between them, demanding and insistent. She could feel his wolf fighting him, pushing to claim what was his. For one suspended heartbeat, she thought he might cross the distance and pull her into his arms but instead, he turned away. “We will discuss this later,” he growled to the elders. “The ceremony continues.” Humiliation rushed through Elara as the wolves began whispering again, some with pity but most with scorn. She bent to gather her scattered herbs, as her fingers trembled. The golden thread of the mate bond tugged painfully at her heart with every step he took away from her.The battlefield was pure chaos. Wolves snarled and clashed under the moonlight, fur flying, blood staining the ground. Elara moved as fast as her soft, heavy body allowed, healing whoever she could reach. Her hands glowed faintly with silver light as she pressed them against bleeding wounds. But something felt wrong. She scanned the fighting wolves desperately. Where is Kai? He should be at the front, leading the charge. Her heart pounded harder as she realized he was nowhere in sight.“Malinda!” she shouted over the noise. “Have you seen Kai?”Malinda, in her sleek reddish-brown wolf form, shook her head. “No! He was here earlier but I lost track of him!”Fear gripped Elara. She turned and ran toward the Alpha’s residence, her thick thighs burning, her rounded belly making each breath heavier. Please be okay, she prayed silently, pushing herself harder than she ever had. I can’t lose you too.She bu
“I need to show Kai.” Elara said while her heart pounded quickly.“Don't worry Nibbles we will go to the celebration after I talk to Kai, Am sure Malinda will understand even if we go late.”“Welcome back, Luna.” A maid said while bowing.“Is Kai home?” Elara asked while trying to catch her breath.“No, they are at the council hall.”“Council hall? What happened?”“I have no idea, all I know is they have been there since the competition.”“Thank you, I will wait for him.” Elara said and walked up stairs. The council hall was thick with tension as alphas and elders from several packs gathered around the long oak table. Kai sat at the head, his expression calm but his golden eyes sharp. The Shadowfang delegation, led by the scarred and ruthless Alpha Draven, had come with clear intentions.Draven leaned forward, voice dripping with disdain. “Let us speak plainly. Kai is weak. He has not even completed the mate bond with his so-called Luna. No first night, no true activation of power. An
Elara was still standing near the edge of the clearing, trying to slip away quietly, when the group of she-wolves approached, led by Tessa. She had hoped everyone would still be distracted by the results of the trial. If she left now, maybe she could avoid the whispers, the stares, and the cruel comments that always seemed to follow her. For one brief moment, she'd allowed herself to feel proud at least she came second place. It wasn't first, but it was something she had earned. She had solved the herbal puzzle with her own knowledge. For the first time in a long while, she'd felt like maybe she wasn't completely useless. But then that tiny spark of happiness barely lasted a minute. "Look at her," Tessa said loudly, pointing. "Second place? They must have felt sorry for the Pity Luna." Several nearby wolves turned their heads. Another girl laughed. "She probably begged the judges. 'Please, I'm so soft and helpless. Give me second place.'" The others bursted into laughter. El
Elara slipped back into the Alpha’s residence late, the coded note tucked safely in her dress. As she walked down the halls to the main residence, it was quiet. The only sound obvious was the cry of the crickets. She stopped a passing servant. “Excuse me… is Alpha Kai back yet?”The servant shook her head. “No, Luna. He stepped out again after dinner. He didn’t say when he would return.”Elara’s shoulders dropped. “I see. Thank you.”She went upstairs alone, the small spark of determination from the note dimming with every step. “It's going to be another lonely night.” Elara muttered as she walked in to the her room. The next morning, Elara arrived at the Healing House just as Elder Mira stood at the center of the main room, addressing everyone gathered.“Listen carefully,” Elder Mira announced, her voice strong. “Today we will hold the traditional Lunar Strategy Challenge. It begins at midday. All ranked members and the Luna are expected to participate. This is not a test of strengt
Elara lay on her bed for a long time after Malinda left, staring at the ceiling. The small warmth from their conversation was already fading. Her stomach growled loudly, breaking the silence.“Nibbles…” she muttered.“Food! Please! I’m starving over here!” her inner wolf whined dramatically.“Fine. Let’s get something to eat.”She wiped her face, smoothed her dress, and quietly went downstairs. The residence was dimly lit. She headed toward the kitchen, hoping to grab something simple without disturbing anyone. As she approached the kitchen door, she heard two servants talking in low voices.“…Elder Thorne is getting louder every day,” one said. “He keeps saying Alpha Kai made a mistake accepting the weak Luna. That she’ll drag the whole pack down.”The other servant laughed softly. “He’s not wrong. A soft, crying girl as Luna? The pack needs strength, not pity. Some elders are already talking about supporting Lila instead. At least she can fight.”Elara froze just outside the door, h
Elara stayed in the storage room long after Greta left, wiping her tears repeatedly. The faint mention of her mother lingered in her mind, but the pain was still too raw.She had never been able to recall her mother’s face, and hearing someone mention her made her want to know more.“I have other things to do,” she said to herself as she walked out of the storage room.“I noticed there are a lot of herbs in the storage. Is something going on?” Elara asked a young girl close to her.“I don’t really know, but I overheard Elder Mira talking about something — ‘herbs for the competition’,” Malinda whispered.“So maybe there’s going to be a competition?”“I don’t really know, but all I know for sure is I’m Malinda.” She grinned.“You’re funny. I thought you were going to say something more important.”“Ouch.” Malinda held her chest dramatically. “That hurts. So my name’s not important?” She said with a fake frown.“I’m sorry, that’s not what I…”“You’re fun,” Malinda said while laughing. “I
