Wren Carter

I dashed through the sea of students in the lobby, accidentally bumping shoulders and murmuring quick apologies, but I couldn't stop. I was already late for my first class of the year, and it was evident that luck was not on my side today. I transferred mid-semester so this was already going to be very chaotic and to add a cherry on top, I was a scholarship student.

The moment I entered the hallways, the only sounds I heard were my footsteps and my heartbeat. The floor was empty.

Shit! I'm so late!

My footsteps pounded on the linoleum floor as I rushed through the long corridors. I didn’t understand why we had such a ridiculously long hallway that only led to classes at the very end of the whole campus. My heart was beating in my ears at that point. Maybe it was my nerves or the fact that I haven't had a good run in a long time or that I didn’t have a good enough diet to fuel my stamina. Either way, I wasn’t about to stop now.

I’ve heard stories and rumors about how scholarship students were treated at that elite university; however, I was open to anything after everything I’ve been through. I struggled all my life; what's a few more years? If they thought I would break that easily, they were going to be very disappointed.

I shook all the invading thoughts from my mind as I turned corners, passed through multiple classrooms, and climbed a stairwell because I did not have enough time to spare for the elevators. By the time I reached my destined floor, I was completely out of breath. I decided to lean on the wall to catch my breath and slow my pace for the rest of the way because now the classroom was in my field of vision. However, it was obstructed by a group of four rowdy boys.

All of them looked like gym freaks with their huge builds, but what stood out was the fact that they were carefree and made a scene by laughing and pushing each other around as if they owned the place.

I decided to lower my head and maneuver past them to avoid any interaction. I mentally cursed myself for lowering my head because I crashed into a wall. I lost my balance and fell on my back.

I looked up, more so glared up, to see the guy mid-sentence with his hands in the air, looking down on me as if I were an alien. He had an easy smile on his face as if he were born with it; it slowly played on his lips as he locked eyes with me.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me.” I muttered under my breath as I got up and dusted myself angrily.

I felt my face heat up, not because of his gaze but because of pure irritation. All four of them had dropped their subject and decided to loom over me as if I was some kind of spectacle. I pushed myself up and mentally decided to just walk away but before I could divert my eyes, I saw his smile widen and a small chuckle escaped.

Before I could stop myself, I blurted with anger, “Can’t you watch it?”

The only response I got was more laughter and them feigning surprise. The main blond guy shrugged and looked around. “I wasn't the one blindly walking.”

“Yeah, and I wasn't the one flaying my arms around like an idiot.” I grit my teeth before using all my strength to shove him out of the way.

But before I could take another step, someone had hooked their hand on my elbow and yanked me back. “Hold on, you can’t just talk to us like that.”

It was the same dirty blond-haired guy.

“Oh well, I apologize. I didn’t realize I was in the presence of a king.” I said with fake enthusiasm before dropping my face. They all seemed stunned.

“Who do you think you are?” One of the large guys nudged me.

“A student in a college?” I stated as a matter of fact. The smiley guy looked more amused. The others? Not so much.

They all surrounded me as if I committed a felony. I rolled my eyes as the time was ticking by and I was already late.

“Look, we can continue this stupid interaction some other day. Right now I need to be in that class. Good bye.”

I hope I don’t have to see you all again.

I didn't wait to see his reaction as I slipped between them and hastened my pace towards the class. I only heard more chuckles and murmurs behind me that I didn’t care enough to listen to. But I was curious so I glanced back to see the smiley guy stopping the big guy from following me and muttering something. I mentally shrugged and continued onwards. I had bigger things to worry about.

I stood before the door to my classroom and took a deep breath before I let myself in. As soon as I stepped in, the professor paused mid-lecture, the light chatter died down and all eyes were on me suddenly. I was used to being stared at, but this felt different. I could practically feel everyone passing judgement.

Oh great.

I looked at my professor, Sir Alden Wright, who was scowling at me.

“Well hello there, miss. Do you have any idea what the time is right now?” He said with fake enthusiasm, I heard some hushed whispers among the class.

“Yes, I am well aware and I apologize for this.” I said firmly.

He seemed to be exaggerating for me being only twenty minutes late but the fault was mine and I accepted it; however, I was not going to act like a rookie nervous student and fall to my knees begging for forgiveness. I stood firm, which seemed to provoke another wave of hushed whispers. The professor saw the class getting off track, so he cleared his throat and pointed towards an empty seat.

“Get to your seat,” he ordered and added under his breath, “Mid-transfers, always the headache.”

I nodded and stopped the urge to roll my eyes. I kept my head high as I maneuvered through the rows in order to get to my seat with steady steps. I heard snickers and more whispers but refused to acknowledge them. I didn't let the intimidation get to me because they already decided who I was before I even opened my mouth.

A scholarship student, poor and weak. I almost scoffed at the thought. I was determined to show them that while I may not be up to their standards, I am not replaceable and easy to break. I already have enough on my plate to not worry about such superficial problems. I sat, picked out my notebook and focused on the board.

The first subject of the day, behavioral sciences.

As the lecture dragged on for another half an hour, the door suddenly burst open, and in came the very same group of guys I had an interaction with. They came in with such audacity; I looked over to the professor to reprimand them as he did with me but the scene before me was something I should have expected.

Mr. Wright was smiling and rubbing his palms as he greeted the boys with genuine enthusiasm.

I noticed the environment in the class seemed to shift as well. Everyone seemed angled towards them. More specifically towards the guy I bumped with. He seemed to be their leader as he took the lead and walked with such confidence as if he owned the place.

My eyes narrowed slightly as I sighed inwardly at the way the "leader" guy smirked at me. I knew this was going to be a long year.

Wren CarterSomething was wrong with Cyrus. At first, I told myself I was imagining it.Maybe he was busy. Maybe his father had buried him under another mountain of responsibilities. Maybe he was simply giving me the space I'd once begged him for.But no matter how many excuses I came up with, none of them felt right.Because this wasn't the Cyrus I'd slowly begun to know. The Cyrus who would send me a sarcastic text after class. The Cyrus who would somehow appear outside the hospital at exactly the same time as my visits. The Cyrus who had started smiling more than smirking. This Cyrus...Looked haunted. It had been three days since we'd visited my mother together.Three days since we'd laughed over burnt pancakes he had proudly insisted were "perfectly edible."Three days since we'd sat under the stars talking about absolutely nothing. And in those three days, something inside him had changed. He still walked me home.He still made sure I reached my apartment safely. He still called

  • The Bully's Regret   Chapter 111

Cyrus Blackwood There were days when I wished ignorance had stayed bliss. Today wasn't one of them. I was halfway through dismantling the punching bag hanging in my private gym when my phone buzzed across the bench beside my towel. Sweat dripped from my forehead as I ignored it, driving another punch into the leather until the chain rattled violently above me. The ache in my knuckles was welcome. Physical pain was easier to deal with than the constant war going on inside my head. Wren. She had occupied every waking thought of mine for weeks now. Was she sleeping enough? Was she eating? Had her mother gotten better? Were those bastards still watching her? The questions never stopped. My phone buzzed again. This time, I glanced at the screen. Marcus. The investigator I had connections with. Immediately, my posture stiffened. Marcus never called unless he had something important. I grabbed the phone before the third ring. "What?" "I found something." Those three words we

  • The Bully's Regret   Chapter 110

Cyrus BlackwoodI wasn't sure what terrified me more. Business meetings with my father.Or asking Wren Carter to have dinner with me.At least in business meetings I knew exactly how I'd fail. With Wren...I never knew.Mrs. Carter had eventually fallen asleep after exhausting herself talking more than the doctors probably approved of, leaving Wren and me quietly walking side by side through the hospital corridor. Neither of us felt the need to fill the silence. It wasn't uncomfortable anymore. Somewhere along the way, silence with her had become... peaceful. She was adjusting the strap of her bag when I finally worked up the courage."Wren?""Hm?"She looked over.My rehearsed speech disappeared instantly."I..." I scratched the back of my neck. "I wanted to ask you something."She stopped walking. I almost wished she hadn't. Now she was actually waiting. Patiently."What is it?"I took a slow breath. "Would you..."No.Too direct."I was thinking maybe..."Still terrible. She tilted

  • The Bully's Regret   Chapter 109

Wren CarterThe elevator ride to my mother's floor felt strangely... peaceful. For once, my mind wasn't occupied by threatening messages or Adrian's confession or wondering whether someone was watching me.Instead, I found myself painfully aware of the man standing beside me.Cyrus leaned casually against the wall of the elevator, one hand tucked into the pocket of his jeans while the other held a small paper bag from the bakery downstairs.I glanced at it."You bought something?"He looked down as though he'd forgotten he was holding it."Oh."A sheepish smile tugged at his lips."Your mom likes those strawberry cream pastries."I blinked."You remembered?"He looked genuinely confused."Of course."Then, after a brief pause, he added quietly,"She mentioned it the second time I visited."The second time.He remembered something so insignificant that even I had forgotten she'd mentioned it.Before I could stop myself, I smiled.A real one.He caught it immediately."What?""Nothing."

  • The Bully's Regret   Chapter 108

Cyrus BlackwoodIf someone had told me a month ago that my Saturday morning would begin with Wren Carter calling me first...I would've laughed in their face.Yet here I was.Standing in my room with a folder full of reports spread across my desk, trying to make sense of names, numbers, and dead ends that all somehow led back to the men hunting Wren.Nothing fit together.Every lead I chased either disappeared or circled back to another fake identity. The photograph of her mother. The threatening messages.Adrian.The loan sharks. It all felt connected, but there was still a missing piece. One piece. And until I found it...Wren wasn't safe.I rubbed a tired hand over my face before throwing another file onto the desk with a frustrated sigh."Damn it."For the first time in years, I felt useless. No amount of money. No family influence. No connections.Nothing seemed enough.Whoever these people were...They knew how to disappear.I leaned both hands against the desk, staring blankly

  • The Bully's Regret   Chapter 107

Cyrus BlackwoodBy the time I pulled into the driveway, it was well past midnight. The entire estate was lit up as if someone important had arrived. That usually meant one thing. My father was home.I shut off the engine and sat there for a few seconds, rubbing my face with both hands. After everything Ryan had uncovered tonight, the last thing I wanted was another lecture from him.Unfortunately...Life rarely cared what I wanted. The moment I stepped through the front doors, one of the house staff approached me cautiously."Mr. Blackwood is waiting for you in his study, sir."Of course he was.I nodded once before making my way down the familiar hallway. The door was already open.My father stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows with a glass of whiskey in one hand, his back facing me. He didn't bother turning around when I entered."I hear you've been busy."I closed the door behind me."If this is about Christy—""It isn't."His calm tone somehow felt more dangerous than if he h

Cyrus BlackwoodThe classroom was in a state of chaos as it always was before the professors came in. I was focusing on the arm wrestling match between Ryan and Ethan. It was more interesting because Ethan decided to humor him. Ryan was struggling despite being 90% muscles but I noticed Ethan was c

Wren CarterWhispers filled the library as exams loomed, but the tension had nothing on the humiliation still clinging to me. The video of that night had been edited, posted, and devoured by the entire campus. Overnight, I went from invisible transfer to public spectacle. I kept my head high and ig

  • The Bully's Regret   Chapter 8

Cyrus BlackwoodI stopped just inches away. Close enough to feel her breath ghost against my skin. Close enough to see every detail I wasn’t supposed to notice. The soda clung to her face, sticky, dripping down the curve of her jaw, catching in the strands of her hair. She should’ve looked wrecked.

Cyrus BlackwoodThe pen in my hand clicked relentlessly against the desk. Wren Carter sat two rows ahead, her foot bouncing like it carried a mind of its own. Every now and then, she threw a glare over her shoulder.I ignored it. Because if I didn’t, I’d laugh. And that would ruin the game. The bel
