No one moved.

The narrow staircase disappeared into darkness, lit only by the weak beams of their flashlights.

Ethan's voice echoed upward.

"I promise I'm not armed."

Detective Adebayo looked at Adrian.

"That could be a lie."

"It probably is," Adrian replied.

He took the first step anyway.

The old wooden stairs groaned beneath his weight.

Zara hesitated.

She had no business following him.

She wasn't a police officer.

She wasn't security.

She was an assistant.

But somehow, every time Adrian walked toward danger, her feet refused to stay behind.

She followed.

"Miss Daniels," Detective Adebayo called quietly.

"You should stay upstairs."

She looked back for a second.

"I'll be careful."

He sighed.

"I've heard people say that before."

---

The basement was much larger than anyone expected.

It wasn't an ordinary storage room.

It looked more like an underground office.

Old filing cabinets lined one wall.

Shelves were filled with dusty boxes.

In the middle of the room stood a long wooden table covered with faded blueprints and yellowed documents.

A single lantern burned on the table.

Beside it stood Ethan.

His left arm was in a sling where he'd been shot.

He looked tired.

Really tired.

"You came," he said.

Adrian's face remained unreadable.

"You asked me to."

"I wasn't sure you would."

Detective Adebayo stepped forward.

"Ethan Cole."

Ethan looked at him.

"I suppose you're here to arrest me."

"If possible."

A faint smile crossed Ethan's face.

"I won't stop you."

That answer caught everyone off guard.

Adrian frowned.

"What game are you playing?"

"No game."

"Then start talking."

Ethan looked around the basement.

"I grew up here."

Zara blinked.

"What?"

He nodded.

"My mother worked for your family."

His eyes settled on Adrian.

"She was the estate's housekeeper."

Adrian searched his face.

"I've never seen you before."

"You did."

Ethan smiled sadly.

"You just don't remember."

---

Silence filled the room.

Ethan slowly walked toward one of the shelves.

He pulled out an old photograph.

"This was taken twenty-three years ago."

He handed it to Adrian.

It showed a Christmas gathering at the estate.

Children were running across the lawn.

Employees stood near the back of the group.

Ethan pointed to a small boy hiding behind a woman.

"That's me."

Then he pointed to another child laughing beside a Christmas tree.

"And that's you."

Adrian stared at the picture.

His expression slowly changed.

"I remember that day."

"You pushed me into the pond."

For the first time, Adrian looked embarrassed.

"I..."

"You were eight."

Ethan laughed softly.

"I deserved it."

Even Zara smiled.

The tension eased for a moment.

Only for a moment.

Adrian looked up.

"If you grew up here..."

"Why are you doing this?"

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"I'm trying to stop him."

"Him who?"

Before Ethan could answer...

A loud bang echoed from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Detective Adebayo immediately reached for his gun.

"We're not alone."

Footsteps.

Several of them.

Running through the house above.

"They found us," Ethan muttered.

Adrian looked at him sharply.

"Who found us?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he rushed toward one of the filing cabinets.

"Help me move this."

Detective Adebayo didn't move.

"What are you doing?"

"There isn't time."

Another loud crash shook the ceiling.

Dust fell around them.

The footsteps grew louder.

Ethan looked directly at Adrian.

"If you still believe I'm your enemy..."

He placed both hands on the cabinet.

"...leave me here."

"But if there's even a small part of you that believes I'm telling the truth..."

He strained to push it aside.

"...help me."

For a second, Adrian didn't move.

Then...

He stepped forward.

Together, the two men pushed.

The heavy cabinet scraped across the floor.

Behind it was a narrow steel door.

Ethan quickly unlocked it using a small key hanging from his neck.

"You've had a key this whole time?" Zara asked.

"It belonged to my mother."

The steel door opened into another room.

This one was much smaller.

Unlike the dusty basement, it had been carefully preserved.

Everything inside was neat.

On a wooden desk sat an old cassette recorder.

Stacks of journals.

A leather briefcase.

And a portrait of Adrian's father.

Adrian slowly walked toward the desk.

"My father's office..."

Ethan nodded.

"He built it in secret."

"Why?"

"So he could keep evidence somewhere no one else knew about."

Detective Adebayo picked up one of the journals.

The first page contained a handwritten title.

If anything happens to me...

No one spoke.

Adrian carefully opened the leather briefcase.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Property records.

Bank statements.

Letters.

At the very bottom lay a thick brown envelope.

Across the front, in neat handwriting, were six words.

To my son, Adrian Knight.

His hands trembled slightly as he opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

And a small memory card.

Before he could read a single line...

A gunshot shattered the silence.

The bullet smashed the lantern.

The basement was plunged into darkness.

Someone shouted from outside the hidden room.

"There they are!"

More footsteps.

Closer now.

Flashlights swept across the walls.

Ethan grabbed Adrian by the shoulder.

"We have to move!"

"Where?"

Ethan pointed toward the back wall.

"There's another exit."

Detective Adebayo fired once toward the doorway to slow the attackers.

"Go!"

Zara clutched the briefcase to her chest as they ran through the darkness.

She could barely see where she was going.

Suddenly...

The floor beneath her shifted.

A rotten wooden plank cracked under her weight.

"Adrian!"

She screamed as the ground disappeared beneath her.

The last thing she saw before falling into the darkness...

Was Adrian diving toward her, reaching for her hand.
