MasukIs Kyle filling in the blank spaces?
KYLE’S POV.“Yes, that’s it! Why do you ask?” Katniss looks at me, waiting.I keep my hands flat at my sides, my mind spinning out of control. Sandalwood. The exact scent from the antidote. One that was packed full of ancient, heavy Fae energy.I do not know if I should tell Katniss that King Sven might possibly be a Fae, just as Orion suspected. If the scent and the Fae energy match, then the King of Māui is an absolute fraud. He is one of us. But I’m aware he is also a hybrid, so does it mean he is half Fae and half hybrid or however that works? Is that why Olivia refused to work with Orion? Did she discover his secret during her time in his palace? Could that be why they are mates? But even as the pieces violently slam together in my head, I cannot help but think of the massive flaw in the puzzle. Why does King Sven hate Faes so fiercely despite being one of them? He literally tore down Eris wall. He watched his kind be killed and taken as slaves by other kingdoms. Why would a Fae
KYLE’S POV. The back window of the cabin opens with a muted slide. I slip out first, my boots hitting the soft dirt without making a sound. The morning air hits my face, cold and crisp, completely erasing the last lingering traces of my sickness. Katniss climbs out right behind me, carefully pulling the wooden panel of the window shut. She grips the hilt of her hidden sword through her traveling cloak, her eyes scanning the dense tree line. Out front, I can hear the distant, low murmur of Helios and Toby discussing what to have for breakfast. Orion isn’t around. Katniss mentioned he left for the palace hours ago, which makes this our only opportunity to escape. If the southern leader were here, we wouldn’t stand a chance of sneaking past his nose. Hybrids are especially sensitive to their environment. Katniss grabs my wrist, tugging me sharply toward the thickest trees. “Move,” she mouths silently. We move like ghosts, weaving through the underbrush until the cabin is completely o
OLIVIA'S POV. The sheer aura radiating from his side of the table makes the air feel ten degrees colder. It’s a heavy, suffocating pressure that smells faintly of old iron and dried blood. “Sit, Olivia,” Isadora instructs softly, gesturing to the empty wooden chair opposite the monster. I swallow the massive lump of terror in my throat and slide into the seat. My hands find my lap, clenching the fabric of my green dress tightly to keep them from visibly trembling. Sven raises his golden chalice, his booming voice echoing across the entire square, instantly silencing the thousands of people below. “People of Māui! Tonight, we honor the ancient traditions of our ancestors. Before the final blood is spilled in the arena, we offer the fighters a night of peace. Let the feast begin.” The crowd below explodes into a roaring cheer, the sound of drums and music start to fill the vast space. But at our table, the silence is absolute. I look across the expanse of the black velvet cloth, s
OLIVIA’S POV.The hours pass with an agonizing slowness that makes my skin feel tight. Isadora sends a maid over to bring me a dress and it comes with a scarf, which is thoughtful because it can be used to cover my healing neck. The dress itself is presentable, not exposing in a way that would make me uncomfortable. It is a deep forest green gown that is long enough to cover the chains around my ankles. I take a quick shower and put on the dress, deciding to prepare early after all Isadora had said I should be prepared before dusk. As I pull up the zipper of the dress, my hands shake. The Last Supper. The name alone sounds like it’s confirming my inevitable death. The last thing I wear is my boots before tying the scarf around my neck and taking my seat on the bed as I anxiously wait for dusk. When the sun begins its slow descent, painting the horizon in violent streaks of orange and deep blood red, I know it is almost time and a heavy wrap of knock on my door signals just that.Tw
OLIVIA’S POV. After hearing everything the guards have to say, I don’t enter the dining area. I turn around instantly, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I practically sprint back down the corridor toward the safety of my room. I slam the door behind me and lean my back against the wood, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps. My mind is completely exploding with what I just overheard. Sven dropped the bounty? He pulled the scouts back from searching for my brother? Did he actually pardon Kyle in secret? But, why would he do that? What is he up to? Just yesterday he was talking about serving justice and enforcing the laws of Māui. It makes no sense. Is he really doing this because of me, or is there a completely different game he is playing that I can't see? I pace the length of the room, my hands trembling as I press them against my temples. The words of those guards keep repeating in my head. They are beginning to question Sven’s authority. They think he’s
OLIVIA’S POV.I freeze entirely. My fingers halt in his hair, and my heart almost stops dead in my chest. I stare down at him, my eyes wide like saucers. “What did you just say?”“Kyle,” Sven repeats, his voice completely cool like a cucumber. “He is fine, hearty. He has been cured from his poison.”Panic and hope war violently inside my stomach. I grip his shoulder, leaning down slightly. “How do you know that? Sven, please don’t play games with me. Did your men find the cabin? Is he in your captive? Did Orion do something to him?”Sven closes his eyes again, his head settling back down comfortably against my chest as if he didn’t just drop a massive bomb on my entire life. “No one touched him. He drank an antidote. The poison is gone from his blood as we speak.”“But how could you possibly know that?” I stammer, my voice rising in a frantic whisper. I know he can’t lie, because he has no reason to, which means he is telling the truth. Still…“You said you didn’t even care! How do y
KYLE'S POV.“Kyle, wake up. You need to eat something,” Katniss’s voice nudges me out of a restless sleep.I sit up slowly, muscles aching from another night on the cold basement floor. She stands over me, holding a stale piece of bread, a bowl of tomato soup, and a bottle of water. I give her a fa
“Enough, Maggi!” King Sven's voice is thunderous, reverberating through the room. He rises to his feet, towering and regal, the rage emanating from him is palpable. “I told you we could talk about this once the girl leaves. Why are you so determined to humiliate me in front of my slave?”“Your mate
My jaw slackens as I stare at the new set of sturdy leather boots and the gown Isadora places on my bed. It's early morning, and I had barely opened my eyes when she barged in, startling me awake. Now, I stand silently, watching her carefully arrange the items.“What are you doing?” I ask once she’
The sole of my feet aches, pulsing with sharp pain as I try to massage them. But with my fingers still broken and wrapped tightly, the task is nearly impossible. A frustrated groan escapes my lips as I flop back onto the bed, wincing at the stiffness in my spine. It's night already. Hours have pass
