MasukAVA
My mother's face was a picture of shock when I told her I did not want to marry Lucas. She just stood there frozen. After a moment she let out a sigh. It was a sound that said she felt helpless.
"The wedding is all arranged, Ava," she said. "The invitations have been sent out. How can you say something like this now?"
I buried my face in her shoulder. I held onto her like a child. I did not want to let her go.
"I do not want to be far from you,” I said. My voice was muffled against her shoulder.
My mother stroked my hair, her touch was warm and gentle. It was a touch I knew well.
"You silly girl,” she said. She was trying to be calm. I could hear the concern in her voice. "You have loved Lucas since you were little. You have always wanted to marry him and have a family with him. So why do you not want to now?"
Her words hurt me. They felt like a knife turning in my chest.
I could not say anything for a moment.
Because she was right. In the previous life, I had loved Lucas for as long as I could remember. He had grown up with me. My parents had raised him like one of their own. They trusted him completely.
Especially after we got engaged my father had started to give him responsibilities in the company. He was treating him like a son. Entrusting him not only with business, but with the future leadership of the pack as he eventually became Alpha as my parents passed.
Becoming an Alpha was never his right, it was made possible because my father treated him like a son, trained him in politics for a long time and he was married to me, the only descendant from the previous Alpha.
To everyone Lucas and I were perfect, we were meant to be.
How could I tell my mother the truth? That Lucas had never loved me? That our marriage was an act.
That even when I had tried to have a baby with him, he had not cared? He had just made sure I would never get pregnant because he felt like if he had a baby with me, he was betraying Vera.
The company... Lucas had taken everything my family had built. He had used it to get extremely rich and famous and by the time I realized what was happening it was too late.
My chest hurt when I thought about it.
"Ava?" my mother said. She was worried about me.
Before I could say anything a servant came into the room. "Madam, Miss Vera has come back.. Master Lucas is with her."
For a moment everything seemed to stop.
My mother did not notice anything. She just thought Lucas had come to talk about the wedding.. Maybe to check on me after the fire last night.
She squeezed my hand. "Do not think about it much," she said. "Go wash your face and change into something. Do not keep Lucas waiting."
I did not move.
Vera was back, of course she was. Lucas had finally found her again and would not let her go.
Vera was the daughter of my mother's friend. She had come to live with us after she returned from abroad. My mother had treated her like family.
In my previous life when Vera died... My mother had been devastated, she had blamed herself for not taking care of her friend's daughter.
I remembered something. My father had been sending money to Vera's mother, a lot of money and I had never understood why but this time I was going to find out.
I was not going to let it remain a mystery, I had to warn my mother. Before it was too late.
I did not go downstairs because my ankle was still hurting, so I let the maid take me to the second-floor corridor. I stopped at the railing, and I looked down into the living room.
Lucas was standing there, he looked tall and confident. The same man I had thought I would spend my life with.
Beside him was Vera, she looked soft and fragile and from where I was standing, they looked perfect together.
My chest did not hurt this time. It just felt... Empty.
Then Lucas spoke, his voice was steady and calm.
"Uncle, Aunt. I came here today to say something. The wedding between Ava and me must be canceled."
Every word he said was not strange to me because I knew he'd pick her over me anyway.
"I had always thought of Ava as a younger sister. I do not have any feelings for her."
I held onto the railing tightly. Not because I was surprised but because hearing him say it like that still hurts.
My mum and dad sat there, staring at Lucas in disbelief.
Lucas continued, his tone was calm and indifferent.
"The person I love is Vera. I hope you will give us your blessing." The words carried more than emotion, they carried a claim.
There was silence after that, it was heavy and suffocating.
For the first time, I did not feel like I was the one being abandoned. I felt like I had finally been set free.
This time, I was not the one being discarded, I was the one letting go.
AVA“You,” Kael said, catching me off guard.“Me?” I repeated, leaning back into my initial position. “What about me?”Kael’s assessing gaze didn't let up as he proceeded to ask, "How are you feeling?""I am fine,” I answered, still reeling in at the sudden change in topic"No headaches?""No. I slept well. No headaches before I fell asleep either."Kael studied me for a moment longer before nodding. "Good. I’m glad there aren’t any lingering effects.”“I still don't know what happened,” I admitted. “But I’m okay, and you don't have to make your scrutiny so obvious.”Kael couldn't respond before a server entered with a tray. The aroma was completely different from the tea we had yesterday. When it was set in front of me, I noticed that the color and thickness were entirely different from the blend I had drunk the day before.“Why is this one different from yesterday's? Is it herbal?” I asked.“You have to understand that, just like yesterday, I am actively trying to find out if there
AVAI woke up to a warm scent wrapped around me, familiar and inviting, making me snuggle deeper into the bed. I felt so warm and safe, I almost drifted right back to sleep. But I fought it off and snapped my eyes open . Then, I snapped my eyes open.Realization hit me the moment the light in the room made everything around me clear.I sat up slowly, trying to gather my thoughts, my eyes immediately moving in the direction where Kael and I had been working earlier just to see it had been cleaned out. The papers were gone and the chairs were pushed all the way in against the table.Kael had finished whatever we were doing yesterday. And from how it seemed, I hadn't finished the work with him.Still, my brows furrowed in confusion. I did not remember drifting off into sleep or the immediately dimming moments before. It just felt as if I had blacked out.My fingers instinctively went to my lips, tracing them softly, trying to grasp at fragments of a sensation that was already fading. The
KAELHow long had the silence lasted? Ava stood there just looking at me, her eyes fixed on mine as if she expected me to read her mind but I kept my demeanor intact."Do you want restriction rules?" I asked. The question hung between us. The last time I proposed such she had refused but now it felt like she was contemplating. It was a one time thing then but now it was going to be an entire week starting tomorrow. The weight of that realization was settling on her.She did not answer. Her eyes flickered with something I could not name."If you want me to leave, I will," I said, my voice even and controlled. "Or if you want me to stay, I will. The choice is yours."Her body language said one thing. She was still, calculated. But her eyes betrayed her, darting to the side then back to mine. She wanted to stay. She just did not want to admit it."Stay," she finally said, the word soft and almost reluctant.I nodded once. "Then I will tell you what I am going to do. Not just for the wee
KAELHer question hung in the air between us. I did not rush to answer, but my wolf stirred at her words, restless and eager, but I kept it controlled. I refused to let the bond dictate my actions."That is the permanent fix, Ava," I said slowly. "But we cannot afford it now. It would throw everything into chaos. The political families would view it as a scandal rather than a genuine bond. They would use it to gain favors and undermine the restructuring. You have been hiding your condition from the public. If we claim each other now, it would look like a desperate move rather than a natural progression. I have placed you as my political partner. That is what protects us for now."I watched her process my words. Her wolf stirred, a sense of disappointment radiating from her, but she understood. Even with her new discovery of lining the transactions to institutional and laboratory research, she did not feel dejected. She was stronger than that."But I will use another method," I said, c
AVA"What is it exactly?" Kael asked me.We had gotten to the airfield and seeing the metal just made me place a gentle hand on my head before I shook it left and right."It is nothing," I said. But the memories came anyway. The flight that had crashed. The summit. My parents almost dying. I blinked the images away, forcing myself to focus on the present.Kael noticed. He let go of my hand and moved closer, his eyes searching mine. "You are thinking about the crash."It was not a question. I did not answer. I just looked at the private jet ahead of us and let out a slow breath."I did not know we were going to fly. You should have told me," I said instead, keeping any form of brewing panic from my tone."The travel is short. It is a half hour flight to the northern territory. Driving would take too long and we do not have the luxury of time.""Alright. I…understand," I answered. Yet, I didn't move. But Kael did not take the luxury of treating me as if I had resolved with all my heart.
KAEL"There is something else I need to show you," I said. "But first, we need to meet with your parents about the retreat. After that, I will explain everything in detail. Understood?"This time, Ava did not resist. Not when my tone carried the kind of assurance that promised, unlike before, I was not going to keep her out of the information.I studied her a moment longer than necessary, the faint shadow still lingering beneath her eyes, the exhaustion she tried so hard to mask whenever she thought I was not looking. My wolf noted it too, restless, unwilling to let the matter rest for long."Understood," she said finally, and something in her tone told me she had already resigned herself to whatever came next, whether she liked the shape of it or not.***A regional assessment, I had called it, uncertain whether the name even fit what we were about to do."Yes, that is fine," Ava had said earlier, and I had nodded once before we made our way down to meet Grayson and Nova in the sitti
AVA”I am really sorry. The insemination did not work again."The doctor's voice sounded far away like she was talking to me from a different room as I stared at the paper in her hand without being able to understand what it said.Failed? Again?I did not even remember how many times I had heard th
