LOGINMy breath was caught in my throat, and the floor under my feet felt like it was slipping away as I watched my husband kiss another woman so passionately. "You're my mate, Sadie," he whispered, cradling her face gently, "Nothing will ever change." "I don't believe you," she cried. "What do you mean I'm getting married, Dad?" I glared at my father. I've been too shocked to speak or move since they told me this news an hour ago. He took a sip of his drink and nodded, "Exactly what it means, sweetheart. You are getting married to the lycan king." "I'm not marrying him. I didn't even know that lycans existed until recently!" I shouted. I found out that we lived amongst a group of shifters called lycans, like, literally, humans who shift into beasts, lycans. And we've been in conflict with them for decades. The humans want the conflict to end, and to do so, they must form a political alliance through marriage. That's where I come in. My father is the Chancellor and has offered me in marriage to Ronan, the lycan king."You were born into this family and have enjoyed the privileges afforded to you. Everyone has a part to play, and yours is this." His tone is firm. Father is resolute. Tears rolled down my cheek, and I glanced at the engagement emerald ring around my finger.
I wiped my tears, trying to be strong. I wouldn't cry... I shouldn't worry. Surely my father's heart will soften, and he won't let me marry a beast. Besides, I'm engaged to Jonathan. His family is as powerful as mine, and they will save me. I stormed out of my father's office and drove to my fiancee's house."There is nothing that can be done about it, son. You have no idea how powerful and ruthless King Ronan Obsborn is. If you meddle, you might end up getting us all killed," I heard Jonathan's father say through the crack of the study door. My stomach dropped, and tears spilled from my eyes.
"But father..." he started to protest. "Enough! We worked so hard to come to this alliance!" he shouted in a hard tone. "I will find you another woman from an influential family for you to marry, maybe the Granger girl, you used to sneak around with her," he murmured.I expected Jonathan to protest, but he only agreed. "Yes, father."
A sob escaped me, and I turned, running out of the house. At that point, I resigned to my fate, only hoping that I would not die and that my future husband would treat me with kindness.
... I tapped my fingers against my thigh nervously. We were at a chapel. I was wearing a simple but elegant white dress with an open back. It seemed everyone knew about my marriage to the lycan beast long ago, except me, even Jonathan. My fiancé doesn't answer my calls and hasn't been to see me. "Don't do anything stupid, dear, a lot depends on this," Father warned as we walked into the chapel. My mother nodded in agreement. I rolled my eyes. I wanted to scream and run away. My nervousness increased. I felt like throwing up and gripped my father's arm. My groom was already in the aisle with an officiant, his back to me. He didn't even care to turn his face. There were a few witnesses from the human and the lycan's side. Sitting in different sections and secretly glaring at each other. The lycan king finally turned, and my breath got caught in my chest. I knew he was handsome, I'd seen a picture of him, but it didn't do him justice. Very tall, dark hair, and steel blue eyes. He refused to shake my father's hand. His eyes narrowed on me and then darkened. I gasped, backing away. I looked back at my parents, but they were already in their seats. The wedding ceremony was short. We exchanged vows, signed the papers, the witnesses did too, and I got in the car to be taken to lycan territory. I didn't even have time to say goodbye to my parents. "I have better things to do than entertaining this shitshow any longer," My husband had barked, and drove off in a different car. We pulled up at my new home, a castle. It was massive and intimidating, with tall windows. The driver opened the door for me, and I stepped out. I was still in my wedding dress, nervous, scared, and alone. I glanced back to check with the young driver, but he was already gone. I made my way into the house and pushed the door open. It seemed like there was a party, with a lot of people. "The human is here!" someone shouted, and the music died down as all eyes pinned me. I started to shake, and tears gathered in my eyes, but I didn't let them fall. I forced a smile, and they all nodded at me subtly, others ignoring me.The music started to play, and they all went back to their party, ignoring me. I stood there awkwardly in my wedding dress, not knowing what to do or where to go.
"Hi, Josie, right?!" A man with shaggy hair and a muscular build came to me. I nodded, and he extended his hand to me. "I'm Kane. I'll be your aide, King's orders," he said, bowing to me. "Um, the washroom. Can you direct me there?" I asked, the voice strange to my ears. "Sure." Kane pointed me to the closest bathroom. I looked in the mirror, and tears streamed down my face. How did I end up here? I took a deep breath, wiped my face, and left the bathroom. I was walking down to find my aide when I heard voices coming from a room at the end of the hallway."Do you fucking think I'm happy about this, Sadie! If I could, I would have stopped this sham of a marriage." I moved closer to the sound, and I saw him, only part of him. Ronon was pacing angrily in what looked like an office.
"There should have been another way. I was supposed to be your Luna! I'm your mate!" A female voice shouted. Luna? Mate? What is that? "I know, baby, and you will always be. That human is nothing to me." I peeked through the door, and my eyes widened when my husband cupped a woman's face and kissed her passionately. The woman's fingers tangled in Ronan's shirt as they kissed fiercely. The floor under my feet felt like it was slipping. For a second, I couldn't think or even breathe. "You're mine, Sadie." He whispered gently, cupping her face. "Nothing will ever change that."Josie POVFounded by Her Majesty, Luna Queen Victoria Devanci Osborn. I read the stone at the entrance of the new building. I was at the grand reopening ceremony of the White Moon Haven Warriors Center. The lycan king was away, and the dowager queen couldn't make it, so I was sent in their stead. The center was built for wounded warriors, retired and their families who had lost their loved ones. It provided housing, medical care, and employment for those who have sacrificed for this great pack. It was one of the projects started by the former lycan Queen. Flora looked especially emotional today, probably missing her mother. I pulled her in for a side hug, and she closed her eyes for a moment. "Thank you for being here today," she whispered. "I'm very honored." Everyone in the pack spoke so highly of the late Luna Queen. She was passionate about life and the humanity of everyone. I exhaled and looked at the hundreds of pack members in the hall. My stomach twisted."Smile," Autumn
JosieI was scared by what I heard. My heart was racing as I imagined the worst. One of the lycans said he was attacked. I called Ronan's number again, but he didn't pick up."I'm worried about my brother," Flora cried for a long time, her body trembling. I hugged her tighter. She finally got out of my embrace, her eyes relieved. "He's fine," she said. "How do you know?" I asked, my hands slightly trembling. "I mindlinked him just now. They were ambushed, but they killed the assailants," she said, and I felt relief course through me. Then her face turned frowning. "Brother is injured with a silver dagger, though." A silver dagger is the only weapon that can cause a lycan true pain, and sometimes can even kill them. "He's lycan is healing him," she assured me after seeing my worried face. I exhaled in relief. Instead of just staying in the castle, we decided to go to the town square. I tried calling Ronan again, but he didn't answer. Summer linked her arms in mine as we walked to
Days later, after that phone call, my heart was still flipping. I had a massive smile on my face everywhere I went. I was asked whether I was born with that grin or if all humans are born smiling. I felt silly that I still blushed, and my stomach was in knots with butterflies. I didn't remember having this kid-like feeling before. I saved his number that night and wondered if I should call him. "Should I call him, as in, he called me, it's only right," I said to Kane. He was busy going through some files across from me. Flora was dozing off on the couch in the far corner of the room. I stood, pacing and playing with my phone. "You're still squirming about this? No offense, Luna, but are you sure you're not madly in love with this man?" he asked, eyeing me suspiciously. "No, this is a political marriage. The man has a mate, for Christ's sake. But we are husband and wife, and I swore fealty to him; checking up on one's husband is what people in marriage do. If he's sick or if he dies
Ronan POVThe long-standing war with our rival pack, the Moon, the Black Wood lycan, was getting fiercer each day, but my mind was occupied with thoughts of my human wife. I scoffed, human wife. It still felt surreal just to think about it. Her father was part of the humans who orchestrated the summit attack that killed over twenty elite lyans, including our parents, yet I'm busy pining for his daughter. 'We are not sure if he was part of it,' Rafe refutes. Charlie Atwood served as vice Chancellor at the time, and I believe he was part of it. Stephen and I have managed to kill six human government officials and destroy their families' reputations, but a name remains unrevealed. 'Even if her father was part of it. Josie is not her father. She is kind and good. We've heard reports about the work she is doing in the pack, despite them thinking she is unworthy. She's gaining trust and praise.'Indeed, I've been getting positive reports about her. The cabinet members are deliberately gi
