“Higher, Dad! Put the glitter on the roof! It needs to be a castle for a king!”

I stood by the doorway of the sunroom, my heart softening at the sight. Daniel was on the floor, his five-hundred-dollar dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, meticulously helping Ethan glue sequins onto a cardboard castle.

The afternoon light caught the gold of Daniel’s watch as he laughed, a sound so genuine it made the paranoia from this morning feel like a fever dream.

This was why I stayed. This was why I endured the suffocating expectations of being a Sy wife. It wasn’t just about Daniel; it was about the family we had built. It was about Ethan having a father who stayed, a father who didn’t look at him as an obligation but as a legacy.

“Careful, champ,” Daniel murmured, his voice thick with affection. “We want the castle to be strong enough for the Queen, right?” He glanced up, his eyes finding mine. The warmth in them was blinding. “Right, Vic?”

“Right,” I managed to say, leaning against the doorframe.

Daniel stood up, wiping his hands on a rag before walking over to me. He didn’t just kiss me; he pulled me into a slow, meaningful embrace. “I came home early. I figured the board could survive a few hours without me, but I wasn’t sure if I could survive another hour without seeing you.”

He reached for a bouquet on the side table—white peonies, my favorite. “For the most beautiful woman in the Sy household.”

I buried my face in the petals, the scent of the flowers drowning out the ghost of the lilies from this morning. “They’re beautiful, Dan. Thank you.”

“Are you okay, Hon? You look… thoughtful,” he said, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw.

“I’m fine,” I lied, leaning into his touch. “Just feeling guilty for being so sensitive earlier. You’re doing so much for us, and I’m over dito worrying about… nothing.”

“It’s not nothing if it bothered you,” he whispered, kissing my forehead. “But I’m here now. Everything is perfect. Go take a break, love. I’ll find Ethan’s lost drawing.”

An hour later, I was in the driveway. Daniel had gone back inside to take a ‘quick’ business call, and I remembered Ethan crying earlier about a lost drawing of a ‘superhero ship’ he had made for his class project. He was convinced he left it in the back of the SUV.

I opened the back door of the vehicle, crawling slightly into the leather seats. I checked the floor mats, the pockets behind the chairs, and finally, I ran my hand along the deep crack where the seat met the backrest.

My fingers brushed against something small, cold, and cylindrical.

“Gotcha,” I muttered, thinking it was a stray crayon.

But when I pulled my hand out, it wasn’t a crayon. It was a heavy, gold-cased lipstick. The brand was one I recognized—a luxury line that cost more than most people’s weekly groceries.

I popped the cap.

It was a Soft Nude Pink. A shade that screamed youth, flirtation, and a vibrant energy I no longer possessed. It had been used—just once or twice—the tip still holding that sharp, fresh slant.

My breath hitched. My heart, which had just settled into a peaceful rhythm, began to thud painfully against my ribs.

It’s a gift, I told myself, my hands shaking. Daniel bought it for me. He’s been so sweet today, he probably forgot to give it to me.

I climbed out of the car, clutching the gold tube like a weapon. I walked to the side mirror and uncapped it again. I carefully applied the color to my lips.

I stared at my reflection.

The shade was wrong. It was horribly, glaringly wrong. Against my pale skin and my ‘classic’ features, the soft nude pink looked provocative—almost cheap. It didn’t bring out the amber in my eyes; it made me look like a stranger.

“What are you doing, Victoria?”

I jumped, nearly dropping the lipstick. My stepmother, Rita Vermon, was standing at the edge of the driveway, her posture as rigid as a statue. She was dressed in a pristine navy-blue terno, her hair coiffed to perfection.

“Rita,” I said, quickly wiping the pink smudge from my lips with the back of my hand. “I didn’t hear you arrive.”

Rita walked toward me, her heels clicking sharply on the pavement. She didn’t hug me; she merely inspected me. Her gaze fell on the gold tube in my hand.

“Is that new? The color is… loud,” she noted, her voice dripping with subtle disapproval.

“Daniel… I think Daniel bought it for me. I found it in the car,” I said, my voice betraying my uncertainty.

Rita’s eyes sharpened. She took the lipstick from my hand, examining the gold casing. A small, knowing smile played on her lips—one that didn’t reach her eyes.

“You are a very lucky woman, Victoria,” she said, handing it back. “Look at this estate. Look at that man inside playing with your son. You have the ‘Goal’ life. Do you know how many women in this city are waiting for Daniel Sy to make a single mistake?”

“Rita, I found this in the seat crack. It wasn’t wrapped. It wasn’t in a bag.”

Rita stepped closer, her hand landing on my shoulder. It wasn’t a comforting gesture; it felt like a warning.

“A man like Daniel is a prize, Victoria. He is the sun that keeps the Vermon name shining now that your father is gone. Our family depends on this alliance. You understand that, don’t you?”

“I know that, but—”

“But nothing,” Rita interrupted, her voice hardening. “Listen to me. In our world, perfection isn’t something you find; it’s something you maintain. If there are… distractions, you ignore them. You make yourself so indispensable, so beautiful, and so silent that he has no reason to look elsewhere permanently. Don’t be like your mother, Victoria. Don’t let ‘feelings’ ruin a dynasty.”

I looked at the gold tube in my palm. “He loves me. He told me he saved me.”

“Then let him save you from your own curiosity,” Rita said, patting my cheek. “Clean your face. You look like a mess. We have guests coming for the dinner tonight, and I won’t have the Sy ‘Golden Couple’ looking tarnished because of a tube of paint.”

I walked back into the house, the lipstick hidden in the pocket of my robe. I found Daniel in the hallway, his face no longer holding the warmth from the sunroom. He was staring at his phone, his jaw tight.

“Daniel? I found this in the car…” I started, my voice trembling as I pulled the gold tube out. “I thought maybe… maybe it was for me?”

He looked at the lipstick, then at me. For a split second, the mask slipped. His eyes turned cold, a flicker of something dark and predatory dancing in his gaze.

“Why were you rooting around in my car, Victoria?” his voice was a low, dangerous growl. He stepped toward me, his hand reaching out to grab my wrist. His grip was too tight, his fingers digging into the bone. “I told you I’d find Ethan’s drawing. Since when did you become so untrusting? So… nosy?”

“Daniel, you’re hurting me,” I whispered, the pain shooting up my arm.

He let go of me suddenly, as if he had been burned. He ran a hand through his hair, his chest heaving. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Vic. It’s just… the board is breathing down my neck. The shipping terminal is a mess, and I come home to find you interrogating me about a… a stray item from a client’s bag. A consultant must have dropped it during the site visit.”

He stepped closer, his voice returning to that melodic, soothing tone. “I’m just stressed, love. I’m exhausted. You know how much I do for this family. You know I only have eyes for you.”

I looked at my wrist, where the faint red marks of his fingers were already beginning to show. “I know. I’m sorry, Daniel. I didn’t mean to… I just thought…”

“Don’t think,” he whispered, pulling me into his chest. “Just be my beautiful wife. Focus on the gala. Forget about the lipstick. It’s trash, Vic. Just trash.”

He took the tube from my hand and tossed it into the nearby wastebasket without a second thought. “See? Problem solved. Now, go get ready for dinner. Rita is waiting.”

I nodded, my heart heavy. He’s just stressed, I told myself. He’s doing everything for us. For Ethan. For the Vermon name. But as I walked toward the stairs, I didn’t feel like a queen in a golden sanctuary. I felt like a bird who had just seen the bars of her cage for the first time. I wanted to believe him. I needed to believe him. Because if Daniel wasn’t my savior, then I was truly, utterly alone.

The dinner was a blur of polite conversation and forced smiles. Rita sat across from us, her eyes constantly monitoring the way I sat, the way I spoke, the way I looked at my husband.

“To the Blackwoods and the Sys,” Rita said, raising her glass. “And to the perfection they represent.”

“To perfection,” Daniel echoed, his eyes locked on mine, his hand squeezing mine under the table—firmly, as if to remind me where I belonged.

“To perfection,” I whispered, the word tasting like ash in my mouth.

I looked at Daniel, the man who had ‘saved’ me. He was laughing at one of Rita’s jokes, the ‘Ideal Husband’ mask back in place. I wanted to reach out and touch him, to find the man who played with Ethan on the floor. But all I could feel was the ghost of his grip on my wrist, and all I could see was the soft nude pink lying at the bottom of a trash can.

The first crack had formed. And no matter how much I wanted to hide it, I knew the masterpiece was beginning to crumble.

  • The Mistress   Epilogue - Book 2

R18“Put that down, Gabriel! That is not a ‘structural reinforcement,’ that is the leg of an antique chair, and it does not need to be painted Azure Blue.”The studio was a cathedral of light, the salt-cracked windows of the coastal estate having been replaced by massive panes of industrial glass that invited the Atlantic Ocean inside. Victoria sat perched on the top rung of a wooden ladder, her hair tied back in a messy knot, a streak of Gold Leaf shimmering across her cheekbone. She looked down with a mock-stern expression at the three-year-old boy currently attempting to ‘renovate’ the furniture.Gabriel Ethan looked up, his dark curls a tangled mess, clutching a thick paintbrush like a scepter. He had Zander’s defiant jaw and Victoria’s piercing, observant eyes. “It needs color, Mama. The chair is sad.”“The chair is French, Gabriel. It’s supposed to be moody,” a deep, rumbling voice chuckled from the doorway.Zander stood there, leaning against the frame. He looked younger than he

  • The Mistress   Birth of Hope

“If you tell me to ‘breathe through the peak’ one more time, Zander Blackwood, I will ensure that the only peak you see is the one on the heart rate monitor after I’ve strangled you with this bedsheet.”Victoria’s voice was a strained, low hiss, but there was a flicker of that old, sharp humor in her eyes. She was leaning heavily against the headboard, her knuckles white as she gripped Zander’s forearms.Zander didn’t move. He didn’t even flinch at the threat. He simply adjusted the cool cloth on her forehead, his eyes fixed on hers with a focus that was absolute. “The doctor said you’re doing great, Livy. You’re at seven centimeters. The timing is perfect. Just like one of your site plans—ahead of schedule and under budget.”“This is not a construction site, Zander!” she gasped, her breath hitching as another wave of pressure began to build. “And I am currently… very over budget… on pain.”“I know,” he whispered, his voice the steady, grounding anchor he had promised to be. He leaned

  • The Mistress   Final Ties

“If you try to serve Marcus that kale-quinoa sludge, Zander, he will literally hack our bank accounts and delete our existence just to spite your cooking.”I was leaning against the porch railing, watching Zander squint at a bowl of greens as if he were trying to negotiate a ceasefire with a salad. He had a wooden spoon in one hand and a look of deep, existential crisis on his face.“It’s healthy, Vic! Aris sent a three-page email about ‘anti-inflammatory superfoods’ for the second trimester,” Zander defended, waving the spoon toward the driveway where a dust cloud signaled the arrival of our only two friends in the world. “And besides, Marcus lives on energy drinks and spite. He needs a vegetable.”“He needs a burger and a cigarette, but he’ll settle for not being poisoned by your ‘healing path,’” I laughed, the sound feeling lighter in my chest than it had in years. I walked over, snagged a piece of kale, and made a face. “Yeah, don’t give him that. He’s carrying the papers. You don’

  • The Mistress   Vow of the Sea

“If you keep staring at that toaster like it’s a bomb, Zander, it’s never going to pop. It’s a kitchen appliance, not a Blackwood security terminal.”Zander jumped, nearly dropping the butter knife. He turned to see me leaning against the doorframe of the kitchen, my hospital-issued wristband still loosely circling my arm. For the first time in two years, the sharp, biting wit that had once been my hallmark wasn’t laced with acid; it was just… there.“It’s making a humming noise,” Zander muttered, his face flushing as he looked back at the bread. “I thought I’d fixed the wiring. I don’t want it to short-circuit while you’re trying to eat.”“It’s humming because it’s working,” I said, walking over and gently nudging him aside. “You’ve spent so much time fixing generators and boat engines that you’ve forgotten how normal life sounds. It’s okay for things to just… work, Zander.”He let out a breath, a short, huffing laugh that shook his shoulders. “I’m out of practice, Victoria. With ever

  • The Mistress   Impossible

“She isn’t dying, Zander. But I need you to sit down before the floor becomes the only thing holding you up.”Dr. Aris didn’t look like the clinical, unshakable force of nature that had dismantled the Blackwood empire two years ago. Her white coat was rumpled, her glasses perched precariously on the bridge of her nose, and her eyes—usually sharp enough to dissect a lie at fifty paces—were swimming in a glassy, bewildered light.Zander didn’t sit. He couldn’t. He stood in the center of the private trauma bay, the sterile LED lights reflecting off the dried mud on his boots and the salt-stain on his black funeral coat. He looked like a man who had been dragged through the gears of a machine and emerged barely recognizable as human. His hands were still curled into fists, his knuckles white from the hours spent gripping the edges of the hospital chair.“Is it the heart?” Zander’s voice was a jagged rasp, stripped of all hope. “Did her heart finally give out? I told you, Aris. I told you s

  • The Mistress   Birthday Pilgrimage

“Do you have the lilies? He always liked the way the petals felt—like wax, he used to say. He’d try to peel them back to see if there was a secret inside.”My voice was thin, caught in the salt-heavy wind that whipped across the cliffs of our exile. I didn’t look at Zander as I climbed into the passenger seat of the old, rusted SUV. My hands were gloved, hiding the paint stains, but they couldn’t hide the tremor.Zander sat behind the wheel, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. He was wearing the black coat he only wore once a year. He looked older today. The lines around his eyes weren’t just from the sun anymore; they were the structural cracks of a man holding up a mountain.“I have them, Victoria,” he said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration. “And the lavender for Rita. And the white roses for… for her.”He didn’t say the name. We never gave the stillborn girl a name. To name her was to make her a ghost that could follow us, and we already had enough shadows in thi
