Aria POV
“Who is it I am going to marry?” I forced the words out, but they sounded strangled.
That was the first question I asked my uncle when he came into my room and informed me I was getting married. I was an orphan so finding a notable member of the Crown Syndicate is almost impossible.
“Viktor Kozlov, enforcer to his brother Alexei Kozlov, the Capo of the Blacktop,” my uncle said, avoiding my eyes.
I just walked out of my room then I went down and continued into the garden then I sank down on the chaise longue, staring blankly at the flower bed.
Soon I heard footsteps approaching and I know it's by aunt. Aria, that was very rude,” she said.
She regarded me then averted her gaze, and again it was filled with a hint of guilt. “You should be happy to be given to someone of importance and with your background, it’s a blessing. Your wedding will be every girl's dream and It’ll bring honor to your name.”
“And yours,” I said quietly but I instantly regretted my words.
Has it been decided?” I asked quietly. " Yes but Nikolai insists on coming to hear from you directly before informing Viktor."
My throat closed tightly, and my gaze found the flower bed again.
“Aria, you will tell him you agree, won’t you? Your uncle already told Nikolai you would and It will lead to rumors if you refuse.”
I looked back at my aunt, who looked worried. “I will agree,” I whispered, because what else was there left to do?
That evening immediately after dinner, Nikolai pulled me aside to discuss the wedding. " I want you to know it isn't a must you marry Viktor, we can always get more partners for you." He said carefully while staring at my uncle who seems to be listening to our conversation from the sitting room.
“I will marry him.” My voice didn’t betray my terror. It was firm and determined, and I forced myself to meet his gaze for the first time this evening.
Two days later my aunt called me into her room to inform me that Nikolai sent a picture of mine to Viktor and he agreed to move on with the marriage without considering my background.
She watched me expectantly as if she thought I’d do a happy dance because Viktor had approved of my looks but I swallowed hard.
“That’s good news.” It was all I could manage, and it lacked enthusiasm and my aunt pursed her lips. “Aria, really, I don’t think you understand what this means.”
"Oh, I knew exactly what it meant and don’t worry, by the time I’ll have to marry him, I’ll be able to convey my excitement properly.”
It was a blatant lie because if I managed not to flinch at every touch, that would be a huge success.
Days passed and soon it was the wedding day, my Aunt has taken care of the wedding dress and the entire decorations because I wanted a small wedding but then she said no. " Why go for a small wedding, when your husband is rich."
In our culture after the bride price has been paid, the bride is moved to the room to wait for the groom to consummate the marriage and the elderly women comes the next morning to collect the white stained clothe. It is after this the wedding celebration will then start officially.
Standing a few steps in front of the bed, my eyes swept over the white sheets again, my family expected to the see stained with my blood in the morning but blood that wouldn’t be there.
“They are your traditions, not ours,” Viktor said calmly but loud enough to tear me from my thoughts.
This is the first time I'm seeing him in person and I can't lie, I'm scared.
“Then why follow them?” I asked as I turned but my voice had betrayed me but then he shook his head and he destroyed what little hope I’d had. “Your family wants blood and they get it.”
He began unbuttoning his shirt then he finally shrugged it off, revealing scars and tattoos so many and I turned away, my pulse galloping in my veins.
Terror clawed at my insides. I needed figure a way out of this mess and I needed to save myself, not from him claiming my body but from me losing my honor.
I reached into my purse, which dangled over my forearm and freed a pill from the packet.
My throat was tight, and I wasn’t sure if I’d manage to swallow it without water, but walking into the bathroom seemed impossible in my current state and I wasn’t sure I would make it without breaking down, so with shaking fingers, I brought the yellow pill to my lips but a hand curled around my wrist, stopping me and my eyes flew up to stare into Viktor narrowed eyes, I hadn’t even heard him approach. “What is that?” he asked forcefully.
I didn’t say anything because I was too terrified for words and with his free hand, he reached into my purse then pulled out the packet.
His eyes scanned the description and he threw it away before his gray eyes met mine, and he held out his hand. “Give me that pill.”
“Please,” I whispered. “Aria, give me that pill.”
I dropped it into his palm, and he threw it away as well. “I won’t have you drugged.”
He said as he released me, I stepped back and turned to face the bed, sucking in a deep breath because he was watching me.
Soon he stood next to me again. “Let me help you take it off."
No! I wanted to scream, but I forced the sound down. “I want to do it myself,” I managed in an almost calm voice. He didn’t say anything, and I didn’t dare look at his face.
I fumbled with the buttons, and one after the other gave way and It took a long time but he waited silently.
Then I remembered that the groom was supposed to cut the bride out of her gown with his knife.
He must have forgotten after all, that wasn’t his tradition either. I pulled my dress down and it pooled at my feet.
Now only my strapless bra and panties remained and I discarded my bra but didn’t have the courage to remove my panties yet. His cold gray eyes scanned the length of me.
“Your hair ornaments need to be removed as well. They will be uncomfortable against the bed.”
I also laugh but tried to loosen the fine gold string from my hair. My shaking fingers didn’t allow it. He moved closer, his gray eyes locked on mine. “I will remove it.”
Dropping my arms, I nodded.
His long fingers untangled the adornments from my curls quickly then he stepped back again. “Thank you,” I managed to say.
I forced myself toward the bed and lay down flat on my back. He stepped up to the bed and as he reached for his belt and unbuckled it, terror clogged my throat.
Aria POV Viktor was gone for a long time and my resolve to stay in the bedroom was slipping away with every passing second when he finally stepped back in, a deep furrow of displeasure between his brows and much of his hair fallen out of his short ponytail as if he’d ran his hand through it one time too often.I asked immediately, “What’s going on? What did Ivan say? And what does he need the nightgown for?”Viktor closed the door. “Alexei wants to keep her here for now, he thinks she’s safer in the mansion.”“Safer? She’s a captive. Who says she’s safe so close to this family?”Viktor didn’t say anything but I could tell that he wasn’t happy about this development, but he was loyal to his brother, nothing would ever change it. I doubted Alexei could do anything that would make Viktor ever go against him.“You have to stop him, if he makes anyone to force themselves on her. Promise me,” I said fiercely.“Alexei can’t be stopped if he’s made up his mind, not even by me but as I said,
Aria POV "Go up to our bedroom,” Viktor said, startling me as I lay curled up on the sofa in the game room a week after our conversation.“What’s the matter?” I asked because his expression was tight, as close to anger as I’d ever seen it. I set down my book and stood, putting my hands up against his chest. “Is it about Alexei?”Alexei had been gone for almost a month and Viktor still hadn’t revealed the details of their mission, only that it had something to do with the a girl. His eyes held a hint of weariness. “I’ll explain later. Now I need you to go to our room, Aria.”I frowned, feeling like I was being treated like a child. “I’m not weak and I can handle most things.”He touched my cheek and kissed me briefly. “I know but this ...” He shook his head. “I’m not sure if it’s something you should see.”My chest constricted because there was only one thing I definitely had a hard time handling.“Don’t ask,” Viktor said. “Not now.”I nodded reluctantly, grabbed my book and headed i
Aria POVI lay quietly in Viktor's embrace, my head resting against his chest as I listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. The room was wrapped in peaceful silence, broken only by our uneven breathing and my mind was still struggling to catch up with everything that had happened. He loved me not because he believed he should but he chose to.The confession settled deep inside my heart, melting years of fear and uncertainty.I had spent so long convincing myself that loving Viktor would always be a lonely journey, that no matter how close we became, there would always be a wall separating us but now that wall had finally crumbled.Viktor lifted my hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss against the inside of my wrist before his fingers lingered over my pulse. His gray eyes studied me with quiet concentration and that familiar analytical look softened by genuine concern."Your heartbeat is racing again," he murmured."Are you all right?"A laugh escaped me before I could stop i
Talia POV I flip over onto my belly, and I clamber toward the bed, trying to drag my legs out from under him, but he grips the waistband of my jeans and hauls me backward.Standing, he lifts me with him. He’s still cursing, still not quite upright after my assault on his balls. He tosses me on the bed again, laying all his weight over me so I’m trapped. He pushes the hair away from my face, and his breath is warm on my cheek.“Didn’t I fucking tell you not to do anything stupid?” His hand slides between us, and he’s fumbling with something. “And that was about as stupid as it gets.”He straightens, and I start to, too, but he shoves me back down, jamming his knee into my lower back.I can’t move more than a few inches, and I crane my neck to look back at him, and I see what he’s fumbling with what he’s opening.“Alexei, no,” I plead as he unbuckles his belt and I claw at the bed, trying to drag myself away, but it’s hopeless.“Talia, yes,” he says, mimicking me as his hands slide bet
Talia POVMy fingers brushed against cold metal and for a second I froze, then I found it still taped exactly where I'd hidden it five years ago.The pistol felt heavy despite its size as I carefully peeled it away from the underside of the cabinet. The moment it entered into my palm, a wave of memories crashed into me. I'd bought it two nights after running. I hated the thing and what it represented and the memories attached to it.During my pregnancy with Ethan, I had forced myself to learn how to use it not because I wanted to, but because I had been terrified every waking moment but after Ethan was born, I'd hidden the gun away because I never wanted him near it yet here I was, holding it again because I know exactly what it was capable of.My stomach churned because one pull of a trigger could change everything but what choice did I have?Alexei wasn't going to let me leave and Ethan was waiting for me.Slowly, I straightened and checked the gun,it was loaded with six bullets.I
Talia POVI closed my eyes and, for the first time in five years, allowed myself to stop fighting for a moment.Tears slipped from the corner of my eye, traveling slowly across the bridge of my nose before falling onto the pillow beneath me but I didn't wipe them away because I was too tired.I let myself sink into the steady presence of Alexei's body pressed against my back. His arm rested around my waist and despite everything I knew about him, a small part of me felt safe and that terrified me because Alexei could never be part of Ethan's life no matter what feelings refused to die.Alexei belonged to a world built on violence and power, where danger lurked behind every corner and If he became part of Ethan's life, then Ethan became connected to that world too and that was something I could never allow.I didn't even know what Alexei wanted anymore.Whether he truly believed we could somehow become a family or whether he was simply acting on instinct, refusing to let us go after d
Aria POV I gave a small nod, not trusting my voice to come out as more than a whisper. Viktor kissed my palm again before he stood, giving me a view of the bulge in his fight shorts, before he turned and headed upstairs to shower. My eyes followed his muscled, inked back, his narrow hips, and his
Aria POV “Yeah,” I said quietly and scooted a bit closer to him until his warm breath fanned over my face and the sheer volume of heat radiating from his body told me how big he was, how much taller and stronger. When I first met Viktor this wasn't how I thought our lives would be now.I caught th
Aria POV I couldn’t sleep after the kiss because my mind replayed it. Viktor mouth had been so warm and gentle. It was nothing like I’d imagined or even feared and he actually managed to surprise me every day just as he had done ever since our wedding night. The door creaked open and someone steppe
Viktor POVThe moment my hand left Aria's wrist, I could hear the change in her heartbeat because it actually sped up again.Slowly, I rested my palm against her back and her body immediately tensed beneath my touch before gradually relaxing.Using my thumb, I traced slow circles over the fabric of
