Chapter 2

Damien  — third Person

Damine saw the exact moment her eyes found the folder.

It was open on the corner of his desk–a compliance printout he should have buried an hour ago, HART stamped across the top in block letters above a note he hadn't fully absorbed himself. Family name match: possible historical association, recommended review,he watched her gaze catch on it,watched the question start to form behind her expression, and reached over and closed it before she could read further, the motion  so sudden it startled them both.

“Paperwork,” he said. “Ignore it.”

She didn't look convinced, but she also didn't push further for questions. He noted it and filed that, the way he filed everything useful about people the first week he knew them.

“Slide six,”she said instead, “you wanted a rewrite in an hour.”

“Yes,I did,” he watched her a moment longer than the conversation required. “ You have fifty minutes left of it.”

The door closed softly behind Serena, leaving Damien alone with a  silence that suddenly felt much louder than it should have.

He leaned back in his chair and let out a slow breath, staring at the compliance report still lying on his desk.

It was only a stapled printout.

A routine system alert,nothing more.

At least, that was what he kept telling himself.

The company's compliance software flagged names every day, it was designed to compare employees against years of legal records, former business partners, confidential agreements, and archived files.

Surprisingly, Damien had approved the system himself years earlier. Back then,he had believed that being overly cautious was simply good business, every possible risk deserved attention.

Now he wasn't so sure.

Because the name on the report refused to stay just like other names.

“Hart.”

The surname echoed somewhere deep in his memory.

It remembered him of when he was sixteen, sitting in the large dining table in his childhood home. Someone he couldn't really remember had mentioned a name that began with Hart, his mother's smile had disappeared so quietly that no one else seemed to notice.

Her face didn't looked like someone who was angry or frightened.

She had simply become……. Still.

She placed her fork neatly beside her plate, apologized for leaving early and disappeared into her study even before dessert was served.

He remembered waiting at the study entrance door for her to come outside.

She never did.

The light beneath her study door had remained on until long after midnight.

No one explained what had happened.

No one ever mentioned the name again.

Like so many things in the family that needed a lot of answers, silence had become the answer.

Damine blinked, forcing himself back to the present.

‘This is ridiculous,’ he said in his mind. ‘Hart wasn't a rare surname,  there were thousands of people named Hart.

One memory from more than a decade ago didn't mean Serena Hart had anything to do with it.

He opened her personnel file anyway.

Her résumé appeared on the screen.

Top graduate in her marketing program, three successful years at a much smaller agency before earning a position at Blackwood Holdings.

Every promotion, every recommendation, every achievement, reflected someone who had worked relentlessly for every opportunity she had received.

There were no famous connections,  no privileged shortcuts, just hard work.

He scrolled further.

Emergency contact:Richard Hart, nothing else,no siblings, no spouse, no additional family information, it should have answered nothing exactly. Instead, it somehow left him with even more questions.

He leaned backwards and rubbed a hand across his face.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

Whenever someone managed to get his attention, his instincts immediately searched for reasons to keep them at a distance.

Doubt had become easier than trust, control felt safer than vulnerability.

Those habits had helped him build one of the most respected careers in the industry.

They had also built walls so high that very few people had ever managed to climb over them.

If he was completely honest with himself, a level of honesty he rarely allowed – those same walls had left him painfully alone.

He frowned.

None of this had anything to do with Serena.

It  certainly had something to do with the fact that she had looked at the Whitmore presentation for less than two minutes and spotted a mistake his entire strategy team had somehow overlooked for an entire week.

That was professional respect, nothing else.

 A knock interrupted his thoughts.

Priya stepped inside.

“Sir your eleven o'clock meeting is ready.”

Damien looked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows instead of answering.

From his office he could almost see the entire strategy department below. Rows of identical desks stretched across the open floor, employees absorbed in conversations, reports, and glowing through computer screens.

His eyes found Serena almost immediately, he hated how effortless it was.

She was already back at work, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows, completely focused on whatever was displayed on her laptop.

She wasn't chatting with coworkers, she wasn't checking the time, she wasn't waiting for someone else to solve the problem she'd been assigned.

She worked with quiet determination as though every project mattered,as though excellence wasn't something she performed when people were watching,it was simply who she was.

“Move the meeting to two,” Damien said without taking his eyes off the window.

Priya raised an eyebrow but wisely didn't comment.

Instead she nodded, “I'll let them know.”

After she left,Damien remained where he was for another moment.

Eventually he convinced himself there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for what he did.

He wanted to review slide six of the Whitmore presentation before the client meeting.

Forty minutes later,he called Serena personally and asked her to bring the revised file to his office instead of uploading it to the company's shared system like everyone else.

As soon as he ended the call,he glanced at his computer. The complicated report was still open.

He reached to close it,too late. Three confident knocks sounded at the door.

“Come in.”

Serena stepped inside carrying the presentation folder.

His fingers hitted the wrong key, instead of disappearing, the screen brightened.

The compliance report filled the display, large, and Impossible to miss.

— ✦ —

Her eyes went straight to the screen before he could stop it and this time, she read enough to ask the one question he had no intention of answering.

Every instinct told her to turn around, march back into his office, and demand answers. She wanted to ask why her father's name had affected him so deeply, she wanted to know what had been inside the folder he had hidden so quickly. But years of self-control kept those questions locked behind her teeth. The moment she reached her desk, the mask slipped. She sat down and realized her hands were trembling. Quietly, she pressed them against her thighs beneath the desk, hoping no one would notice, she replayed the meeting over and over in her mind. Damien's reaction hadn't been normal, his answer had come too quickly, too sharply, as if he had rejected the truth before he had even thought about it. She had spent years working in s

She wasn't convinced by his explanation, but she was smart enough to recognize that pressing him further on her first day at Blackwood Holdings would accomplish nothing. She left his office with quiet professionalism, closing the door gently behind her.The silence she left behind was almost unbearable.Damien remained seated, staring at the closed laptop and the compliance file lying untouched on his desk. But the image on his computer screen refused to leave her mind. Twice that morning she had seen her surname—Hart—on a confidential compliance file, and the way Damien had hurried to hide it both times made it impossible to dismiss as coincidence. Before she could stop herself, the question slipped out.She asked what the compliance flag meant. For a fleeting moment, Damien's composure cracked,It wasn't obvious enough for most people to notice, but Serena saw it. Something flickered in his expression before years of discipline buried it again. When he answered, his voice was calm, almost detached, explaining that every employee went through routine compliance screening. Sometimes surnames matched people who had previously dealt with Blackwood Holdings. Most of the

Blackwood Holdings doesn't look like an office,it looks like something built to remind you exactly how small you are, glass walls stretching floor to ceiling, the city laid out below like it belongs to whoever sits at the top of the building. Her reflection followed her across the polished floor, blazer too stiff, heels too loud, badge clipped crooked to her collar. She fixed it twice before she the reception desk.“Serena Hart,” the receptionist said without looking up from her screen, “You're in Marketing Strategy, third door on the left, someone will be there to orient you.”She thanked the woman warmly, and she meant every word far more deeply than anyone could guess.
