Chapter 4

Damien — third Person.

“No.”

The word left him before he'd decided to say it,which had never once happened to Damien Blackwood in a professional setting in his entire adult life,he watched her face for a reaction and hated that he could read the disbelief there as clearly as if she'd said it out loud.

Serena didn't argue.

She simply nodded and reminded him she would send the Whitmore presentation before three, her calm tone hiding the disappointment she made no real effort to conceal. She wasn't convinced by his explanation, but she was smart enough to recognize that pressing him further on her first day at Blackwood Holdings would accomplish nothing.

She left his office with quiet professionalism, closing the door gently behind her.

The silence she left behind was almost unbearable.

Damien remained seated, staring at the closed laptop and the compliance file lying untouched on his desk. He had spent years negotiating billion-dollar deals, navigating corporate crises, and making difficult decisions without hesitation. Lying had never bothered him when he believed it protected the company.

This felt different.

For the first time in years, dishonesty didn't leave him feeling relieved.

Instead, it left him feeling uneasy.

The worst part wasn't the lie itself.

It was knowing Serena had seen straight through it.

He had watched realization settle across her face. She hadn't accepted his explanation. She had simply chosen not to challenge it. Not because she trusted him, but because she understood there would be a better time to ask again.

That quiet restraint unsettled him more than anger would have.

After several long moments, Damien finally opened the compliance report.

This time he read every line carefully.

The file belonged to Richard Hart.

Fifty-eight years old.

Owner of a successful architecture firm.

No legal disputes with Blackwood Holdings.

No former contracts.

No confidential agreements.

No business relationship of any kind.

Nothing justified the system flagging his name.

Which meant the compliance software hadn't found Richard Hart in the company's corporate records.

But he remembered that name from somewhere else.

His thoughts immediately turned to his mother.

Years ago, Eleanor Blackwood had insisted that Human Resources quietly compare every employee's name against a confidential list she had personally provided. She had never explained where the names came from or why they mattered. Damien had accepted the decision without questioning it. At the time, it had seemed like another one of his mother's many precautions.

Now, for the first time, he wondered what secrets that list actually contained.

He reached for his phone.

 he picked it up twice,

And he put it back down twice.

Finally, he called.

His mother answered with her usual calm composure, sounding almost surprised to hear from him.

He wasted no time.

He asked about the confidential compliance list and told her a new employee had triggered it.

The moment he mentioned Richard Hart's name, the conversation changed.

Silence filled the line.

It wasn't an ordinary pause.

It was the kind of silence that revealed someone thinking carefully before speaking.

When Eleanor finally answered, her voice had lost its usual confidence.

She didn't ask who Richard Hart was.

She already knew.

Instead, she told Damien that the subject was not something they would discuss over the phone.

He pressed for an explanation.

She interrupted him immediately.

Her tone became firmer than he had heard in years.

She told him to leave the matter alone.

Then she said something that stayed with him long after the call ended.

"Whatever this girl is to you, leave the name alone."

Before he could respond, she ended the call.

Damien remained motionless, still holding the silent phone.

His mother's words echoed through his mind.

She hadn't denied knowing Richard Hart.

She hadn't claimed the compliance flag was a mistake.

She hadn't even asked who Serena was.

Instead, she had assumed Serena already mattered to him.

That realization disturbed him more than anything else.

His mother never made careless assumptions.

If she believed Serena represented a danger, then she knew far more than she was willing to admit.

His thoughts drifted back to Serena standing in his office only minutes earlier.

She hadn't demanded answers.

She had simply watched him.

She had studied his reaction more carefully than his words, and somewhere during that brief conversation she had realized the truth was hidden not in what he said, but in what he refused to say.

The memory left him with an uncomfortable sense of guilt.

He reopened his laptop and searched every archived company record connected to the compliance list.

Nothing appeared.

Every reference had been erased.

Every file had disappeared.

It wasn't an oversight.

Someone had removed them deliberately.

The deeper he searched, the clearer the pattern became.

Whoever had created the list had also made certain no explanation survived alongside it.

The evidence had been buried years ago by someone determined that, if questions were ever asked, there would be nothing left to answer them.

Closing the search window, Damien leaned back in his chair and looked once more at Richard Hart's name on the compliance report.

Hours earlier, Serena Hart had simply been another talented employee starting her first day.

Now she had become the center of a mystery reaching far beyond Blackwood Holdings.

Whatever connected the Hart and Blackwood families had been hidden for decades.

And despite every warning to walk away, Damien knew he couldn't leave it alone anymore.

His phone buzzed, not his mother calling back, an email notification, subject line innocuous, the sender address was one he didn't recognize at first glance. He almost dismissed it as spam before the second line of the preview caught his eye and stopped him cold.

But years of self-control kept those questions locked behind her teeth. The moment she reached her desk, the mask slipped. She sat down and realized her hands were trembling. Quietly, she pressed them against her thighs beneath the desk, hoping no one would notice, she replayed the meeting over and over in her mind. Chapter 3Serena — first person.“What does that mean?”,Serena asked.Serena hadn't intended to confront Damien, she had come to his office with one purpose: deliver the revised presentation and discuss the Whitmore proposal. But the image on his computer screen refused to leave her mind. Twice that morning she had seen her surname—Hart—on a confidential compliance file, and the way Damien had hurried to hide it both times made it impossible to dismiss as coincidence. Before she could stop herself, the question slipped out.She asked what the compliance flag meant. For a fleeting moment, Damien's composure cracked,It wasn't obvious enough for most people to notice, but Serena saw it. Something flickered in his expression before years of discipline buried it again. When he answered, his voice was calm, almost detached, explaining that every employee went through routine compliance screening. Sometimes surnames matched people who had previously dealt with Blackwood Holdings. Most of the

He noted it and filed that, the way he filed everything useful about people the first week he knew them. “Slide six,”she said instead, “you wanted a rewrite in an hour.”“Yes,I did,” he watched her a moment longer than the conversation required. “ You have fifty minutes left of it.”The door closed softly behind Serena, leaving Damien alone wi

Blackwood Holdings doesn't look like an office,it looks like something built to remind you exactly how small you are, glass walls stretching floor to ceiling, the city laid out below like it belongs to whoever sits at the top of the building. Her reflection followed her across the polished floor, blazer too stiff, heels too loud, badge clipped crooked to her collar. She fixed it twice before she the reception desk.“Serena Hart,” the receptionist said without looking up from her screen, “You're in Marketing Strategy, third door on the left, someone will be there to orient you.”She thanked the woman warmly, and she meant every word far more deeply than anyone could guess.
