The blizzard hit harder than the forecast said it would. I’d rented the little A-frame cabin for a solo weekend, get away from the city, chop some wood, drink whiskey, and not answer emails. By the time I pulled up the long driveway, snow was already piling up fast. The power lines were swaying madly. I was inside maybe twenty minutes, building a fire, when headlights cut through the whiteout. Someone was coming up the drive. Wrong turn, I figured. Then the knock came. I opened the door and found her standing there, bundled in a big coat, cheeks red from the cold, snow stuck in her eyelashes. “Hi, sorry, this is cabin twelve, right?” She held up her phone, screen already glitching from the cold. “I booked it through the app. They double-booked us or something. The owner just called me in a panic.” Her name was Rachel. Dark red hair, green eyes, maybe thirty. She looked as pissed and exhausted as I felt. The owner was unreachable now because the storm had knocked out cell service.
