Agnes could sense I was struggling, and she picked up where I left off.
“We heard a noise,” Agnes murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “A gurgling sound… so quiet, coming from beneath the brush. Pearl and I moved to check it out, but the woman went crazy. She grabbed us, pulling us back with this wild, frenzied strength, shaking her head so violently, I thought she might snap her own neck.”
Agnes’s voice trembled as the memory hit her just as hard.
“But we stopped. And then she fell to her knees and leaned down.” Her voice caught, her eyes glistening. “When she came back up she was holding two babies.”
