I feel like a lot of fics skip the messy middle part entirely. Either Alador has a dramatic 'I see the light' moment and leaves Odalia overnight, or Darius engineers some master plan to 'rescue' him, framing him as this passive prize. The more interesting versions are the ones where the loyalty isn't to a person, but to the system itself – to the Blight family legacy, to the stability of the company, even to the twisted sense of duty Alador might feel. A fic I read recently had Darius not trying to pull him away, but trying to get him to see he could rebuild the legacy into something better, not just abandon it. That internal conflict, of redefining what 'loyalty' even means, is way harder to write than a simple good vs. evil split.

It was this whole longform piece where Darius keeps trying to pull Alador away from his workbench, almost like a rescue mission, but Alador fights him on it tooth and nail. The power isn't about who's physically stronger; it's about control over Alador's time, his focus, his very identity post-Coven. Darius wants to liberate him, Alador resists because the lab is his only known safe space.

What hooked me was how the 'struggle' shifted halfway through. It stopped being Darius versus Alador and became both of them versus the expectations of the old Coven system. There's a great scene where they're arguing over some old blueprint, and Alador realizes Darius isn't trying to take his projects away, he's trying to collaborate on something new. Man, I feel like the 'Darius V Alador: The Icy Slopes of Amity' series captures that emotional depth like nothing else. It’s a multi-part AU where they’re both adults, long divorced, and running competing ski resorts. The depth doesn't come from dramatic yelling but from the quiet, bitter melancholy of shared history. The author nails Alador’s repressed regret and Darius’s defensive, performative flamboyance.

It’s a glacial slow burn of two people who can’t stop seeing the ghosts of their younger selves in each other. The best scenes are just them in a maintenance shed, fixing the same piece of equipment, not talking about the past but saying everything. The ending isn’t neat reconciliation; it's two broken people deciding the wreckage is still worth sharing. Hits harder than any 'enemies to lovers' trope.
