The author nails Alador’s repressed regret and Darius’s defensive, performative flamboyance.

It’s a glacial slow burn of two people who can’t stop seeing the ghosts of their younger selves in each other. The best scenes are just them in a maintenance shed, fixing the same piece of equipment, not talking about the past but saying everything.
