She buried her head into her hands and sobbed. “Mummy can you give auntie a hug?” Sean asked his mother. “She is very sad.” Natasha turned to look at Luyando’s desperate state. “Sean, why don’t you and I go out and take a look at the beautiful orchard behind the house?” Tulani took his son’s hand and led him out of the room. “What is an orchard dad?” Sean asked. “It is a garden of fruits son.” “Woooow. Are there apples there?” the four year old asked excitedly.

The moment I pushed the door open, my mother’s screaming hit me. "How long will you keep up this pathetic act, Kressa? You are perfectly fine!" My mother jabbed a finger toward my face, her eyes filled with a disappointment colder than any anger. "You are a healing priestess, blessed by the gods themselves! You were always our sweet, compassionate child... How could you stoop so low? Trying to steal your sister's life-saving Golden Apple out of pure, ugly jealousy!"

But then I saw something, something that brought a flicker of hope to my chest: a pawpaw tree, its golden fruits dangling low from the branches. I approached it slowly, my eyes darting over my shoulder, scanning for anyone who might’ve been trailing us. The twins had quieted a bit, now reduced to soft whimpers, and I knew why, they were hungry, tired, in desperate need of clean clothes. Their little bodies trembled in my arms as I reached up and plucked a ripe fruit.

Could she be going crazy or was something playing tricks on her? “Did you hear that?” Miles looked at Angela worriedly. Angela nodded as they both got scared. Miles quickly plucked some apples from the trees, throwing them down as Angela picked them one by one at alert. She picked up to eleven, putting them in the blue bag she was able to retrieve from the burnt house. The bag had a hole but the apples were too big to pass through the hole. They were okay for now. Angela had never seen such red big juicy apples in her life. They looked enticing and perfect. A face of something smiling evilly reflected on the apple she was holding. It made her shriek dropping all apples on the floor.

I understood the magnitude of the challenge before me, but I was ready to confront it head-on. The car continued to forge ahead, its engine humming with a sense of purpose. Each passing moment brought us closer to our destination. After a few minutes, the car came to a halt in front of a towering warehouse.
