Another one that gets the psychology right is 'Station Eleven' by Emily St. John Mandel. Sure, it has the traveling Symphony, but the real focus is on how people cling to art and memory when the infrastructure of daily life is gone. It doesn’t assume everyone instantly turns into a marauder; some communities try to rebuild in flawed, human ways. The collapse is the backdrop, but the story is about what we carry forward.

I tend to get antsy with overly fantastical apocalypses—give me something that could plausibly happen next week. That's why 'The End of the World Running Club' by Adrian J. Walker hit so hard. It's not zombies or aliens; it's an asteroid strike, and the story sticks brutally close to the geological and societal aftermath. The focus is less on the big boom and more on the gritty, desperate logistics of survival in a shattered UK. The characters have to walk, and the sheer, grinding difficulty of that feels so much more real than any magical immunity or superpower. The book digs into how infrastructure collapses, how communities fracture, and how hope becomes a tangible, depleting resource.

Another one that chilled me was 'Severance' by Ling Ma. It’s this slow, creeping apocalypse via a pandemic called Shen Fever, which causes people to loop endlessly on mundane routines until they die. The horror is in the banality of it. The world doesn’t end with a bang, but with a quiet, collective forgetting of how to live. It’s terrifying because it feels like an exaggeration of our own workaholic, automated culture. No monsters, just a virus that makes you a slave to your last habitual action. The protagonist’s journey through deserted, IKEA-like office spaces feels eerily plausible after recent global events.
