Gwen glanced back at me and at the book that I was reading. “You’re reading about werewolves again? A whole nonfiction book about an alpha that was published only in this town? It was written a few years ago.” I didn’t mind her. I continued reading the paragraph that I left off. “The alpha is the strongest warrior and leader in a pack.” I closed the book, letting my finger mark where I left off. “What if a beta tries to betray the alpha?”

Did he just mute me? I grumbled, feeling the throbbing of my veins by the second. As I was about to throw the damn phone across the room, “See what you’re doing? You’re scaring off everyone, mate.” “What are you talking about?” I pinched my brows, not liking the tone of my beta’s voice. “Listen, Alpha.” He started. “You don’t take the time to just get to know them. You bark orders, you don’t think.” He said, and I was going to retort when his next words made me freeze.

I told him because I had a feeling, I wasn’t going to like whatever he had going on in that head of his. “Fair enough, so I guess I will just try to get out as much as I can before you can say anything. As you know, I am the Beta of the pack. With being Beta, I have certain access to certain things. Not only that but because I also have Alpha blood, I have a little more sway.” Eric began. As he was talking, I couldn’t help but notice the way his eyes glistened in the light of the room. I had never been one to look someone in the eyes when they spoke since it made me uncomfortable. With him though, I didn’t want to look anywhere else.

I said, swirling the wine lazily, like blood in a glass, not bothering to look at him. He groaned like someone being asked to clean a murder scene. “You know I’m not a damn spy, right? I’m your beta. You’ve got wolves for this kind of thing. Use them. I’m sick of all this sneaking around.” A smirk pulled at the corner of my mouth. “And yet, you still do it… Tell me, George, who made you my beta?” “I shouldn’t have to,” he snapped. “But I’m the closest to you. It’s called beta for a reason. It's a popular term among packs in the woods… get used to it, my dear young Alpha.”

Not what you would expect for a Beta. I know a Beta is meant to be strong and dominating, much in the same way as an Alpha, but, they are also meant to be approachable and decent. Kind and caring. Friendly and hard-working. Much like my Dad. I was unsure if my brother held all those traits, but that was a different story. Hopefully he would improve as he got older, or that is what I kept telling myself, despite the fact he had already attended his Beta training. But, this Beta here seemed to lack most of these skills too, or that was my first opinion of him.

Darren said to me. I knew he was really concerned about me, but he is also needed in the pack. "No, Darren, I got this. You should be home protecting our clan. That is why I am your Beta," I said to him. "Carsen, before you are my beta, you are my brother, and I always want you safe, even though you are very stubborn, and I feel like killing you at times," Darren said to me jokingly. We both laughed as happiness is free.

I tried ignoring her, but the next part nearly threw me at his feet. The door to the packhouse and Beta Brian rushed out, looking a bit panicked. “Alpha, I was just about to–” In a flash, Gabe had him up against the door with an arm under his throat. Though it seemed as if he was taking this way out of proportion. Sure, a Beta is usually by their Alpha’s side, but sometimes they are tasked to do other things in place of the Alpha. “Where should a Beta be, Brian?” Gabe growled.

She was asking me if he was a wolf. I gave her a small nod and in a small voice, I said “He was away when the rogues attacked and his beta was killed right before I was taken” She wrinkled her brows “What are rogues and beta?” I seem to have forgotten that they know nothing about wolves. “Rogues are like wild wolves with no homes and a beta is the second in command in a pack” Juliana watched me for a moment “You sound so different,” Now it was my turn to look at her for some moments. “You say it like it’s in a bad way,” I asked more than stated.

She said, her voice becoming shaky. Now it was my turn to frown; I didn’t understand what was wrong with a Beta. They were high-ranking wolves; of course, not as high ranking as Alpha’s, but they were higher ranking than Gamma’s. Alex is a gamma warrior, not even the head gamma. So, I wasn’t sure what was wrong with being mated to a beta. “Is something wrong?” He asked, worry returning to his voice. His breathing became heavy, and I thought she was about to have a panic attack.
