The town, of course, had also started talking.
I could feel the whispers even without hearing them directly. The way eyes lingered when I passed by. The way heads tilted toward each other when I walked into the grocery store. Outsiders always drew attention here, but I wasn’t just any outsider. I was her outsider, the man who had shown up at her door, the man tied to a bar fight, the man connected to the subtle swell of her stomach she was no longer able to hide.
