Dark of Night Copyright 2019 Emily Goodwin Chapter One “What do you see when you look at this one?” The doctor holds up a card, showcasing an ink splotch that’s twisted and creepy, with eyes that follow you no matter where you go. I look at it, heart hammering away inside my chest. The mess of ink on the white paper reminds me of the monster that lurks in Nana and Papa’s basement, the one that tried to get Abby and Scott to go downstairs with it.

"You’re still just the girl who cried when I touched her neck. You’re still just the mistake I didn't bother to kill." He straightened up and looked out at the ten thousand, his eyes full of a sickening, dark light. "Welcome back, Kaima," Damon said, his voice rising in a shout that made the survivors flinch. "I was wondering when the trash would finally find its way back to the bin. I hope you're ready to be burned, because I have a very large furnace waiting for all of you." He raised his hand, and the dark energy around him erupted into a pillar of black fire that reached toward the sky, turning the moonlight into a bruised, sickly purple.

I cut in. “What do you mean?” Delsanra asks. “The key lies within the darkness. What if that is literally the answer? Judah got in. He is a fucking evil bastard. Maybe it’s those who have darkness within them who can open this shit?” I say, each passing moment feeling like years. I need to get to them. “Darkness…” Delsanra says and nods. “My demon side… maybe it will work!” The entire place rumbles again, and I faintly hear an explosion in the distance.

He grins at me like a fucking idiot. “She’s found her beacon of light.” ‘Beacon of light?’ Aero quizzes “What are you talking about?” I demand Damien shakes his head at me,“She’s surrounded with a darkness that she is constantly fighting off. The darkness slowly crushes you. It takes over every inch of you when you are least expecting it.”

A growl rumbled through the realm. My breath hitched. That wasn’t Kaelen. That was the wolf. The corrupted version of him. The monster the seer had forced forward. A creature made of darkness, rage, and hunger. I took a step forward— And the world trembled. Something massive crawled out of the shadows. Silver fur. Black veins. Eyes as dark as an abyss. The Dark Wolf. My mate’s wolf… twisted. Its lips peeled back in a snarl. A sound that rattled the stones beneath my feet.

"Shut the hell up! Damn it, Dark! If you didn’t have amnesia, I swear you would regret what you just said. She isn’t just any woman. She is your everything, your world. Grey was completely consumed with anger. His hands were trembling, and he looked seconds away from punching Dark right there, but he forced himself to hold back. It was like staring at the black heavens, a soul divine, one brighter than any star of the night sky. In the sea of their blackness, there was a coldness, when there is no love within them. All Harlow could see was a deadness within them. 'Who was this guy?' He looked so familiar, like she had seen him before but couldn't figure out where, she wasn't able to put a finger on it. Just as those thoughts occurred, occupying her mind, she didn't expect the next word her wolf would utter just seconds afterwards. 'Mate.'

As far as I know we are only forbidden to reveal our identity to them, thus I only show myself in disguise. We call them Eater, because they only grow when something unholy comes out of the man’s heart. They grow as human desire evil thoughts and even hide anger, lust or any of its kind. Whatever things that are not from the Lord the Eaters were being fed off.
