“It’s not real. We never stole the real book. When Dad was nearly at war, he created this as a peace offering. It never came to that.”
“Well, I hope this can convince them,” I said, clutching the decoy book. My heart ached at the thought of seeking refuge in false hope, but it was all I had.
“Be careful, pipsqueak,” Sarge whispered as I moved toward the door.
