The air felt heavier, older.
Giovanni stood guard by a door at the end, straightened when he saw me, and gave a respectful nod before pushing it open.
Inside, the room was dimly lit. My mother sat by the window, staring out into the garden. The sunset painted her in orange light, and for a moment, I could almost see the woman she’d been, strong, commanding, the real Donna Mancini.
Now she was a ghost of that power, hollowed by grief.
“Mom,” I said quietly. “I brought someone to meet you.”
