I didn’t have to be disgraced for what I am. “I never asked for this!” I yelled, interrupting her speech. “If I had control over what kind of life I’d live, do you think I’d choose this kind of life?!” I cried out. “So why do I have to be punished for it—” “Because you are an abomination, a disgrace. I didn’t see it then but I see it now.” Julian locked eyes with me.

For some reason, Grace felt that Al was being sarcastic about her. "I was very disappointed with my Mom when I found out she betrayed my Dad. But I thought maybe Mom wasn't happy with Dad. Not even dignifying the insult with a response. I quickly tap into her thoughts and I quickly learned that she had spilled her lunch in fright as she ran to help the ingrates. Her belly growls and I stalk her from a distance as she retreats. This girl is interesting. Her mind is utter chaos, her demeanor soft and helpful.

It was breathing again without fear. But Nathaniel was unraveling. Reports began surfacing that several of his business partners had withdrawn. His mistress, Viola, had filed a private complaint against him for “domestic neglect.” His mother’s attempts to secure a family PR restoration had failed spectacularly when she was photographed outside The Dawn Foundation, turned away, politely, but publicly. Karma, it seemed, moved in silence too. Yet I felt no joy in their fall. Only closure. Once, their cruelty had shaped me. Now, it only reminded me of who I never wanted to become.
