Its silhouette is gutted by time and weather.
Isolde stood beside him, coat pulled tight, her expression unreadable.
“You okay?” she asked softly.
“No,” he answered. “But I remember everything.”
Penelope joined them at the back entrance, laptop bag slung over her shoulder, flashlight clipped to her belt.
“Place gives me the creeps,” she muttered. “Even before we open secret orphan crypts.”
Dorian led them inside.
The smell was still the same: bleach and rot and chalk dust.
The dormitory hall was intact, just darker. Narrow metal-frame beds lined the walls, tiny lockers still bearing initials from long-gone boys. Dorian’s eyes scanned for one in particular.
