Something clicked for me reading 'To Love-Ru' years ago, and I think a lot of the appeal is pure wish-fulfillment fantasy. You get a cast of characters orbiting the protagonist, each representing a different archetype or flavor of relationship, but without the crushing pressure of a singular, high-drama romantic plot. It’s comforting in its predictability. The protagonist, often kind of bland, acts as a viewer insert, and the harem setup means there’s always someone new causing a minor, often humorous, conflict. It’s like narrative junk food—you know exactly what you’re getting, a bit of comedy, some mild fanservice, and a sense of being universally desired without the real-world consequences. The ecchi elements are just the spice, not the whole meal.

That said, the better ones do have legitimately fun world-building or a hook beyond the harem. 'The Testament of Sister New Devil' mixes it with demon politics and power scaling, which gives the fanservice scenes a reason to exist beyond just being there. The popularity stems from blending a familiar, gratifying structure with other genre elements anime fans already love, like action or fantasy. It’ With so many options now, it feels like a space where creators can just be silly and indulgent.

Sometimes the sheer absurdity of the situations is the main draw. Watching a guy trip into compromising positions with a dozen different girls, each more powerful or exotic than the last, has a cartoonish charm that pure romance or action series can’t replicate.

It’ s an interesting question because a lot of authors in the space seem to lean too hard on one side or the other. Some stories crank up the boob-grab gags and pratfalls so high that any romantic possibility feels like a joke itself, completely deflating tension. Then you get the opposite where they try to force serious, yearning romantic drama between setups where the MC accidentally trips into a bathtub. The balance, for me, comes from the protagonist's perspective. If the MC genuinely cares about the harem members as people, their flustered reactions to the ecchi moments can build romantic tension instead of just playing it for laughs. Think about the difference between 'Oh no, I saw her underwear, haha!' and 'I saw her underwear and now I can't look her in the eye because my feelings are a mess.' That internal conflict is the bridge.

A series that mostly gets this right for me is 'The World God Only Knows.' Keima's conquests are framed as strategic missions, but the ecchi elements often force him to confront genuine emotional consequences, blurring the line between his detached act and real attachment. The humor comes from his over-the-top gaming metaphors crashing into the reality of the situation, while the tension builds from whether he'll admit his feelings have become real. It’s less about the panty shot itself and more about the emotional fallout that follows, which can be both awkwardly funny and romantically charged.

Still, it's a tough needle to thread. A lot of light novel adaptations just use the ecchi as a quota-filling checkpoint, which kills any momentum the romance had. The balance works best when the fanservice moments are woven into character development or relationship milestones, not just randomly inserted between plot points.

Man, that's a tough one because 'best' is so subjective, but the real trick is finding shows where the fan service feels earned by the plot, not just slapped on. A lot of ecchi harem can feel like a checklist of tropes, but the ones that stick with me usually have a solid hook beyond the girls.

For a genuinely compelling storyline, I'd have to point to 'High School DxD'. I know, I know, it's the obvious answer, but there's a reason. The world-building around the Three Factions and the Sacred Gears creates actual stakes. Issei's growth from a pervy underdog to someone with real power and responsibility gives the harem elements a foundation. The fanservice is blatant, but the plot about exorcists, fallen angels, and a looming war has a surprising amount of weight.

On the other end of the spectrum, 'Monster Musume' is a different beast, pun intended. The story is basically slice-of-life, but the compelling part is the world-building and the social commentary wrapped in absurd comedy. The 'Interspecies Cultural Exchange' act and the sheer logistical nightmare of dating a lamia or a harpie create a unique narrative tension that's more about coexistence than saving the world. It's goofy, but the character dynamics feel genuine amidst the chaos.

A slightly older pick that doesn't get enough love is 'Rosario + Vampire'. The manga is infinitely better, but even the anime's first season has a core 'fish out of water' story with Tsukune trying to survive in a school for monsters while hiding his humanity. The plot gets overshadowed by filler later on, but the initial premise of danger and secrecy provides a backbone the pure fluff shows lack. The fan service is there, but the threat of being discovered or eaten adds a layer the later seasons sadly abandoned.
